  • Summary
  • Putin and Kim to join China's Xi at military parade
  • China will be marking anniversary of end of World War Two
  • Iran's president and Myanmar junta chief also attending
BEIJING, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping will be flanked by leaders of some of the world's most heavily sanctioned nations - Russia, North Korea, Iran and Myanmar - at a military parade next week in Beijing, in a show of solidarity against the West.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong-Un will attend "Victory Day" parade on September 3 marking the end of World War Two after Japan's formal surrender - the first time they have appeared in public alongside Xi.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected to be on the dais as tens of thousands of troops march through the Chinese capital, completing a quartet that Western political and economic analysts have described as the Axis of Upheaval.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, who rarely travels abroad, will also attend, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Almost no Western leaders will be among the 26 foreign heads of state or government attending the parade, which political analysts say will demonstrate Xi's influence over nations intent on reshaping the Western-led global order.

"Xi Jinping is trying to showcase that he is very strong, that he is still powerful and well received in China," said Alfred Wu, Associate Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore.

"When Xi was just a regional leader, he looked up to Putin, and saw the kind of leader he could learn from - and now he is a global leader. Having Kim alongside him, as well, highlights how Xi is now also a global leader."

A loose coalition of states bent on reshaping the Western-led global order, the "Axis of Upheaval" has sought to undermine U.S. interests, whether over Taiwan or by blocking shipping lanes, and sought to undermine Western sanctions by providing economic lifelines to each other, the analysts say.

The only Western heads of state or government attending the events in Beijing are Robert Fico, the prime minister of European Union member state Slovakia, and Aleksander Vucic, the president of Serbia.

Fico has been an opponent of sanctioning Russia for its war against Ukraine and has broken ranks with the EU by visiting Moscow. Vucic also visited Moscow in May and wants good relations with Russia and China but says Serbia remains committed to joining the EU.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Russia, which Beijing counts as a strategic partner, has been hit by multiple rounds of Western sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with its economy on the brink of slipping into recession.

Putin, wanted by the International Criminal Court over accusations of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine, last travelled in China in 2024. He is largely ostracised by the West and avoided making major concessions over Ukraine as U.S. President Donald Trump struggles to end the war there.

North Korea, a formal treaty ally of China's, has been under United Nations Security Council sanctions since 2006 over its development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Kim last visited China in January 2019.

China, the world's second-largest economy, buys some 90% of Iran's sanctioned oil exports, and continues to source rare earth metals critical to the manufacture of wind turbines, medical devices and electric vehicles from Myanmar.

Other leaders attending what will be one of China's largest parades in years include Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and South Korea's National Assembly Speaker, Woo Won-shik, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei told a press conference.

The United Nations will be represented by Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua, who previously served in various capacities at the Chinese foreign ministry, including time as the Chinese ambassador to Italy, San Marino and Myanmar.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama will attend the parade, Hong said. He did not mention any guests from Italy or Germany, the two other Axis Powers during World War Two.

China Set To Unveil New Tank: What We Know So Far

Key Points and Summary – Rehearsal photos for China’s upcoming Victory Day Parade have revealed a new main battle tank, possibly named the ZTZ-201.

-This new medium-weight tank appears to be a direct response to lessons learned in Ukraine, where heavy tanks have proven vulnerable.

-The ZTZ-201 reportedly features a revolutionary hybrid-electric propulsion system for high speed and a smaller 105mm main gun, prioritizing maneuverability.

-Analysts also expect it to be equipped with an advanced active protection system to counter drones and missiles. Its official unveiling on September 3 will offer a clear look at China’s next-generation ground forces.

China’s New Tank Is Almost Here

Photographs taken during a recent rehearsal for China’s upcoming Victory Day Parade, which will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Asia, have revealed some details about a new tank expected to be revealed in Tiananmen Square.

The event, scheduled for September 3, will feature a display of Chinese military hardware, including new weapons and armored vehicles.

Reports suggest that one of the tanks seen during the rehearsals could be the ZTZ-201 – a medium main battle tank that weighs between 35 and 50 tons.

Unlike heavy main battle tanks, the new Chinese design – which is expected to be fully unveiled during the parade and subsequent media coverage – will focus on modularity and hybrid propulsion. Defence Blog reports that the tank may feature a 1,500 horsepower propulsion system powered by a diesel engine, two electric motors, and battery systems.

The configuration could reportedly allow the tank to reach speeds of 80 kilometers per hour on roads and 50 kilometers per hour on rougher terrain.

If confirmed, the ZTZ-201’s reported 105mm main gun would also mark a notable shift from the 125mm armament fielded by China’s heavier Type 99A.

If the reports prove to be true, it could suggest China is taking note of lessons learned on the battlefield in Ukraine, where heavier tanks became easy targets as a result of their lack of maneuverability on difficult terrain.

Specifically, tanks have become increasingly easy targets for drone systems designed to provide simpler, cost-effective ways of striking ground targets.

Chinese military analyst Fu Qianshao also hinted that the new tank could be equipped with a GL6 active protection system (APS) and a quad-faced phased array radar.

“The system can continuously monitor the surrounding environment, automatically deploy countermeasures and intercept incoming missiles, rockets, and drones, significantly enhancing survivability,” Fu said.

While more may soon be revealed about the tank, Beijing has historically shrouded its most advanced ground platforms in secrecy. The Type 99A, for example, entered service more than a decade ago, but open-source information on its armor composition, sensor suite, and electronic warfare capabilities remains sparse.

The ZTZ-201 may receive the same treatment, both to complicate foreign intelligence assessments and to maintain some element of strategic ambiguity.

What is clear, however, is that the unveiling comes at a time when China is accelerating efforts to showcase next-generation ground forces in parallel with ongoing naval and aerospace modernization.

So, all leaders of China's neighbors will attend, except India that is a sympathizer of Japan in WW II, not surprising

.
India didn't exist in WWII. It was British.

The South Koreans are also suppose to be attending. I think it has more to do with the mutual hatred for what Japan did to these peoples, than mutual bonhomie.
If SK president is to attend, then NK Kim probably won't come, he might not want to stand next to SK president on Tiananmen like last time in 2015. NK and SK have hateful relation now. SK is going to send speaker of SK national assembly this time, maybe under US pressure.

I don't know whats wrong with the US, we are just a weak country, how come they need to be so paranoid. As Confucious once said, the more you try to block the flow, the flow will find a gap ultimately.

What’s also interesting about this tank, with its medium weight but impressive engine for such a small tank (1500 hp) is this is the kind of tank that would it only be deployed for a reunification contingency, but also would replace the Type 15 on the disputed border with India, where it is to face the T-72 as the best tank the Indians could field there. Even with the planned upgrade for the Indian T-72, it will have only a 1000 hp with a weight 41-45 tons but will have a 125 mm smoothbore gun. It will be interesting to see how China uses missiles from its 105 mm gun to overcome any limitations of its gun.

It's hybrid too, plus I think the doctrine of these new vehicle family are going to be completely different.

It is supposed to have advanced propulsion that will have the same muzzle velocity as a 125 mm munition

I think the current SK president is trying to thaw relations with NK.

Would any potential conflict in the Himalayan foothills and ranges even see a large scale use of tanks? I think both sides will just lob missiles and drones at each other. Troops and vehicles there would have to cross very narrow roads and dangerous passes, where they'd be easy pickings for missiles, drones or ambushes.

Putin is the most important guest. it is said he will bring some gifts to China (some latest turbojet engine technology). I am jealous, we never get such generous gift from the russians. Ccp has big leverage.
