Afghan Refugees op/ed by Ambassador Tariq Osman Hyder

Afghans "refugees" came and left in waves. The 4(+- 0.5) million are residuals. Remnants. 1.3 million were registered as POR. 600k or so as ACC. Basically 2 million as registered. Another 2 million illegals. These are 2023 numbers. 1.77 million have since left, we don't know how many more have comeback. 2-300k would be a reasonable guess.

Total afghans that have used Pakistan as revolving door would p million 1980s. Some left when soviets left, some left when mujahideen fell, some ran when mujahideen fell. A lot more went back on Taliban fell, some returned when Taliban returned. The rich among those who came to Pakistan left for Europe and Americas and Gulf. The middle class stayed in cities while the poor stayed in camps and villages with no money for mobility.

All Govt numbers, UNHCR or any third party estimates fall around 3.5-4.4 million back in 2023.

There are another 250k afghans with fake Pakistani identities. Once the main group is repatriated, it won't take as much effort to cleanse them out of the system. As the data shows, 250k can be easily deported within one month or so.

So to answer your question, more or less, yes.

Buddy Pakistan is the wild west. Nobody knows the exact figure but its many times more than these figures. That's why they keep finding more in Islamabad. Now imagine what's going in the frontier wildlands.

"Nobody knows"

Nothing personal, but when it comes to it, I would consider Pakistan's government and UNHCR data more credible than feelings, insinuations, and guesses of a anonymous member of an online forum. And since that member can't provide a single piece of peer reviewed data to support his claims, arguing over it is waste of time.

No one can stop you from imagining half of Pakistani Pashtuns as afghans so, ....... stay at it. 👍

Pakistan must continue and send all of them back.
Then close off the border and fence it.
Also need to stop all the smuggling at the borders

So you are telling me that the total number of Afghans settled in Pakistan since the 1979 crisis / soviet invasion till 2024 is 4 million. Once these 4 million are sent back by and large ... no more Afghans left in Pakistan. is that what you are stating?

It doesn't matter, in few years large chunk of Afghans will be gone. After that anyone found to be afghani without proper visa or forged CNIC will also be arrested and deported. We are near the end of afghan refugees in Pakistan for good.

1.6 million bogus CNICs according to him. The figure for refugees and fake documents are much much higher.

Many of them moved to the middle east and Europe using Pakistani documents. They will also need to be stripped of their nationality and deported to Afghanistan.

Everyone involved since the 80s in this scam should be investigated.

This is the biggest case of passport fraud the world has ever seen.

Update as of November 15, 2025.

961,561 have been deported in 2025.

1,767,552 (1.767 million) Afghan illegal settlers have been repatriated back to Afghanistan since illegal foreigners repatriation plan began in 2023 under Kakar caretaker government.
44,071 since tha update one week ago which is ~6,296 per day.

There are still give or take 2 million pre 2023 afghan settlers in Pakistan. At the current rate, we will be close to completely repatriating pre-2023 Afghans by end of 2026.

Pakistan could be near end of the program by now had it not paused in 2024.

The shame and blame is on Pakistan for not having effective control over who it issues it damn passport to and for not being discerning on who it should give its passport too.

PESHAWAR: The federal government has accelerated a major phase of the closure of Afghan refugee camps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the voluntary repatriation programme, speeding up the process of electricity disconnection, transferring water supply systems, and handing over all education and health facilities to district administrations and relevant departments.

Officials said the operation is being carried out on a district-by-district basis to ensure that no assets or facilities remain outside government control. Voluntary repatriation from all refugee camps is continuing alongside this process.

Federal government sources confirmed that the phased operation is being implemented with the cooperation of the provincial government, which is fully supporting the process. Earlier, the provincial government had strongly opposed the idea of shutting down all camps at once.

Across the province, a total of five Basic Health Units (NHUs) have so far been handed over to the Department of Health, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In the education sector, seven out of 20 schools established in refugee camps have been handed over to the Department of Education, while the handover of the remaining schools is progressing rapidly.

In Chitral, both refugee camps have been completely closed. The camps were handed over to the Deputy Commissioner, and all movable and immovable assets and facilities present at the camps were formally transferred to the district administration.

In Mardan and Swabi districts, five refugee camps have been closed. Electricity supply has been disconnected at Gandaf Camp and Barakai Camp. In Mardan district, electricity supply at Kaghan Camp and Baghicha Camp has also been disconnected. In Malakand district, electricity supply at Jalala Camp has been cut off.

In Kohat and Hangu districts, electricity supply to all refugee camps has been completely disconnected. At the same time, the Water and Sanitation Services Company has started taking over tube wells in all camps of both the districts.

At Lakhti Banda Camp in Hangu, the Department of Education and the Assistant Commissioner inspected the schools. The handover process of the school is under way, however, the school was sealed by the Assistant Commissioner. In the health sector, the Department of Health, along with the Assistant Commissioner Hangu, has taken over the BHU Katakani in Hangu.

In the Haripur district, electricity supply has been disconnected, and Pesco is continuing the removal of infrastructure. In the Lower Dir district, electricity supply has also been disconnected at Timer Camp, Chakdara Camp, and Toor and Mayar Camps.

Officials said that the disconnection of electricity, removal and transfer of transformers, takeover of tube wells, and the handover of schools and Basic Health Units to relevant departments through district administrations are continuing across the province, while voluntary repatriation from all refugee camps remains in progress.

We need more content on the impact of these deportations. I wonder how the towns and villages are reshaping across the country.

Hopefully it will lead to more positivity. These Afghans poison the mind of Pakistanis in the hope they become a turncoat. They sour the mood and create divisions so they are not compatible with Pakistani society. End this experiment once and for all.
