no doubt taking U.S. diplomats prisoner was an extremely reckless act. the problem with the blame game is that each side can point to something earlier, e.g. was the 1953 coup not an act of war?

regardless, even without the hostage crisis I am inclined to think the US would impose sanctions on Iran/Iranians. the US refuses to tolerate any openly anti-US world order regime, regardless of its democratic character or lack thereof
