The Algerian Ministry of Defense requested 6 Chinese Type 056 corvettes from Beijing, and after confirming the Algerian Navy’s satisfaction with the first Chinese-made ship of this class, it now plans to produce the rest of these ships in Algeria under a bilateral agreement with Beijing.

“Military Watch Magazine” reported that the Chinese Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group, which is the world’s leading company in building combat ships in the world, undertook the manufacture of the first cruiser, and Algeria received it in 2023. This cruiser is considered one of the most advanced warships deployed in Africa and the Arab world.

Classified as light frigates, these corvettes are equipped with a modern array of weapons and sensors. Featuring a multi-mission design, it is capable of patrolling, surveillance and combat missions. It is equipped with advanced radar systems, surface-to-air missiles and anti-ship armament, making it well suited to Algeria's maritime security needs. Each deploys twelve vertical launch cells, including four that accommodate the YJ-83 anti-ship cruise missile and eight that accommodate the HHQ-10 short-range surface-to-air missiles.

What is new in this arming process is that the manufacture of the six corvettes may take place in Algeria with a license from Beijing and with the participation of Chinese technicians and Algerian labor.

The 15th Italy-Algeria Joint Committee concluded yesterday. The work began on December 3 at Palazzo “Cornoldi”, the headquarters of the Army’s military guesthouse, and continued on the 4th and 5th with visits to Italian industries: in Bolzano, at the Iveco Defence Vehicle site, and in Ronchi dei Legionari (GO) at Leonardo S.p.a.

The activity was co-chaired by the Secretary General of Defence and Deputy National Director of Armaments, Dr. Luisa Riccardi, and by General Mohamed Salah Benbicha, Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defence of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. In a climate of cordiality, mutual satisfaction and shared intent, issues relating to cooperation in the field of materials and equipment were addressed, with reference also to the development of the respective industrial sectors of Defence.

After having conveyed to the other party the greetings of the Minister of Defence, Hon. Guido Crosetto and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Portolano, Dr. Riccardi underlined the importance of the North African country as a strategic partner on the southern flank of Europe and the Atlantic Alliance, also in light of the current international dynamics that are part of a general framework characterized by challenges and threats related to Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Middle Eastern crisis, energy challenges, illegal migration flows and climate change.

Then, the Secretary General of Defence/DNA highlighted that Algeria, an “anchor” of stability in the Mediterranean area, is linked to Italy by solid friendship relations and important bilateral collaboration in many fields, including Defence. For Algeria, Italy is an important partner of reference, from the point of view of military equipment, both for the high reliability of its products and for the willingness of industries to start collaborations and cooperation through the exchange, transfer of technologies and the training and education of crews, technical personnel and workers in Algeria.

The Segredifesa delegation confirmed the willingness of the Italian Defense to support the Algerian counterpart with a sharing of technology and industrial know-how. Particular emphasis was placed on the Joint Venture between Leonardo and EPIC/EDIA (Etablissement De Developpemoent Des Industries Aeronautiques) at the Sétif site in Algeria. In this regard, Dr. Riccardi highlighted the opportunity to give maximum impetus to the activity, in order to immediately start the industrial phase of assembly of AW-139 helicopters, and future industrial collaborations, also in other sectors.

From a naval point of view, the collaboration between Fincantieri and the Algerian Defense includes the acquisition of a logistics support unit based on the "Vulcano" ship, in service with the Navy. Furthermore, the development and expansion of the Algerian shipyard in Annaba is planned, for the production of naval units of about 50 meters.

The meeting concluded with the commitment of the parties to continue the cooperation, setting among the objectives for 2025 a series of meetings aimed at increasing exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
