I am starting to like these embargoes, they act as mini stress tests on the defense industry and show you gaps and weaknesses in the supply chain and accelerate rates of domestication. lol

If they had never done an embargo would Altay have become indigenized as quickly as it has been, with as much urgency? It has even made other projects more aggressively pursue indigenization. It makes you not lazy and cut corners by buying subsystems off the shelf b/c of cost issues or speed of delivery.

Turkey might still have been buying Wescam if Canada didn't embargo, but with embargo they ended up speeding up the creation of ASELFLIR-600 and now it is industry leading and will likely take market share from Wescam.

Hold your horses! We’re not done with the BATU’s transmission part just yet. Once that’s sorted, whole new possibilities will open up for engines both on land and at sea. For instance, we’ll be talking about domestically produced CODAGs for ships. You might want to pay close attention to the look on the Germans’ faces then! LOL

You’re right. To have that type of turbine, the TF35000 project needs to succeed first. Even if it does, we can’t export turbines based on it unless they’re cheaper to produce than LM2500s.

But I’m not referring to the turbine itself—I mean the CODAG transmission that allows the turbine and diesel engine to work together. If we can successfully produce BATU’s transmission, we can definitely make that kind of transmission.

No one can make a cheaper LM2500, maybe only china. The LM2500 is the gold standard in Marine propulsion, its in almost every ship as the most popular option and so many have been built at scale.

I'm hoping we can get GE to give License production like Japan has, they recently gave refurbishment and maintenance rights to Turkey for the LM2500.

Turkey can't really produce one in numbers where exports would be competitive, but for self sufficiency, its worth pursuing Local production, it will provide enough experience for if reverse engineering or cloning is needed, it can potentially happen.

One of the highlights of Turkish Army Recognition 2026 was the showcasing of advanced technologies in missile technologies, autonomous systems and armoured vehicles including the Altay main battle tank at 7:33. The tank is armed with a 120 mm main cannon and features upgraded protection systems, including additional frontal chassis armour and ERA (Explosive Reactive Armour) with layered passive/reactive composition. It is also equipped with the indigenous AKKOR APS (Active Protection System), designed to intercept anti-tank guided missiles and RPG threats, significantly enhancing battlefield survivability.

that would put Turkey above many European and NATO tank production in terms of modern tank production

heavy modern tank production is usually the yard stick by which we measure the strength of the military industrial capacity

They can do much more, but currently the orders are just enough to keep the production line active, as they don't want to do mass production with the Korean powerpack, when the domestic is so close to being ready..
