Apple Pay now available in 80+ countries and regions with 535M+ users - Updates and Discussion

I use Apple Pay as it is totally secure since my fingerprint is required to both unlock the phone and also make payment. 0.15% per transaction fee which is passed back to the customer is definitely worth it for the convenience and security of Apple Pay.

Much better than carrying a credit card around where a thief can purchase multiple times using contactless before the terminal asks to input the pin.

Not to mention the threat of someone skimming your credit card. Apple pay is definitely secure.

...and just like Tesla Supercharging it's also idiot-proof.

No inputting of totals. You just scan your face, place it near the terminal and it goes "ding", and you know everything is done.

How to use Apple Pay

How to use a Tesla Supercharger

Like Apple Pay there is a bare minimum of steps needed. There is nothing to read, no code to type, no nothing. You walk up to the handle, grab it, and plug it in. After a few minutes it goes "click" and you unplug it and put it back on the hook. That's it.

Just like the iPhone the car does everything and you do almost nothing.

We have UPI. Why will anyone use complicated Apple Pay ?

How is Apple Pay more complicated? It takes literally seconds to do a transaction vs scanning a QR code with UPI.

You can hook it up to Debit Cards, Credit Cards, Pre-paid cards, Store cards, and some other miscellaneous types.

Relative to UPI, which is now the default Indian payment method-

1. It's complicated in the sense that you need a credit/debit/store card. You don't with Upi. It plugs to your bank account directly and seamlessly.

2. It's not versatile. Apple pay is consumer to business. UPI is used to pay to businesses but also between people 2 people.

3. UPI is absolutely free. No charge for merchant or consumer for the transaction.

Any financial payment system that does not use UPI in India is unlikely to succeed. Apple can use UPI to launch a payments system in India just like Google has done. Google Pay is pretty popular in India, it uses UPI.

That is a valid point..if your bank ATM card can not be used in large networks you will likely have a problem. For instance Bank of America told me I am a member of the less than 1% because I refused to have my ATM card hooked up to a Debit card/NFC. They said that is a little known option available that extremely few people exercise but possible. So my ATM card looks different than 99.99% of other people's.

I actually don't want my bank accounts directly linked to any phone payment methods for security reasons.

So my Apple Pay is hooked up to credit cards instead of directly with my bank account. If somehow $10,000 is charged to something I know it won't be taken out of my bank account. Plus the credit cards give me cash-back.

True, but Apple Pay does somewhat support sending money between people but that is really not a major feature and is mostly a hacked in add-on.

Well yes because the Indian Government is paying its costs...but I'm sure they aren't going to pay costs if it starts being used Internationally.

For security/control reasons I don't think Apple will bend. Google apparently did.

I don't think it's a security issue. There is two factor authentication on all UPI transactions and you can set your own limits for the maximum amounts can be transferred.

It'll be a business model and control decision from Apple.

That said, I don't want to take steer the thread to UPI, it's about Apple Pay, which I really appreciate and use in Canada/US.

Use 2 bank accounts, one is only for daily transaction with minimum balance. Use debit card for daily and frequent daily transaction.

We also have money card in Indonesia as well, just put minimum balance and can be used in any transaction including for public transport like MRT, LRT, Commuter train, toll road payment etc

That means that only 6% of the world's population is using Apple Pay. considering that the US has a population of 340 million people, this means that Apple Pay hasn't actually gone global.

By the way, the number of people using WeChat payments has exceeded 1.3 billion, and the number of Alipay users has exceeded 900 million.

Yes, but WeChat pay isn't widely accepted around the world.

The spread of Apple Pay around the world is yet another example of US technological soft power acceptance while the rejection of WeChat payment is an example of the failure of Chinese soft power.
