Sadegh Ziba, the Iranian reformist thinker at the University of Tehran, says:"It seems that we Iranians have not yet forgotten our historic defeat at the hands of the Arabs, and we have not forgotten Qadisiyyah even after 1,400 years have passed since it, so we harbor deep-seated grudges and buried hatred toward the Arabs, as if it were a fire beneath the ashes that could turn into flames whenever the opportunity arises. The intellectuals despise the Arabs, and you find many of the religious among us repelled by them—except that this phenomenon.... and this phenomenon spreads among the religious in the form of cursing the people of the Sunnah. The hatred and grudges toward the Sunnis and their symbols among many Iranians is, in reality, the other side of the coin of hatred toward the Arabs."
