Bangladesh: Analyzing Hasina era Adani Power Deal

Modi-Adani wants out of the contract.

India already allowing Adani to sell the power from this plant to Indian consumers.

You can speculate on the reasons but this contract only came about due to Hasina and she is now gone. We still have no public disclosure of the contract and maybe Modi-Adani wants it to be gone and buried.
Well now Hasina gone, wondering what's stopping the interim government from releasing the contract?
Wish BD also has acts like Right To Information act like in India.

Secondly, you are entitled to have your opinions. But without substantial backing they are just accusations.

The cost of power in PK seems to be around 35 PKR, looks like PK could actually benefit from an Adani power deal
They can't. Because the Chinese companies have to be paid according to their capacity but not electricity consumed.
A well bargained deal I should say.

So Chinese deals are fantastic even though they might be more expensive but Adani deal is Hindutva ideology trying to suppress BD..

But you don't rely on a state with hindutva extremism
They shouldn't. Instead they should have relied on the islamic extremist Pakistan to build their infra. Like Pakistan has been doing for 75+ years now. #CPEC

Shhh, silence. The big brother is watching us.

You're wasting your breath bro. With a collective literacy rate of 62% (which could be also be inflated). He/they won't understand. Leave it.

Let the court of arbitration decide whether these BDs pay their share of money or feign revolution.

Because of excelent and going well you're going to IMF for 1 Billion every year. And because of bad management BD has been exporting 30 billion in garments every year.

Bad enough you mismage your own economy, you have to also become a bad influence on other countries that are doing a decent job.

And @UKBengali the lesson is for you too. Keep going down the path of cock-a-meme scatterbrained policies and you'll stand in line in front of IMF with katora in hand too.

Are you guys slow In the head, we mean Bangladesh no harm whatsoever

The hindutva extremists are clearly enemies of the entire Muslim.world and south Asia

Why the hell would any state put themselves in a situation where their power supply is controlled by a state full of hindutva extremists who are clear enemies

Importing upto 20% is not ceding control.

Hasina negotiated a fair deal with Adani especially compared to the Chinese ones in Pakistan.

And it includes buying cheaper hydro from Nepal.

It’s a brilliant deal when looked at holistically.

Bangladesh fast tracks payment to Adani Power after supply cut

GALORE, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Bangladesh is accelerating payment of more than $800 million it owes Adani Power (ADAN.NS), opens new tab ahead of a Nov. 7 deadline set by the Indian company, which has cut electricity exports to Bangladesh by more than half, two senior government officials said.
Adani Power, which exports power to Dhaka from its 1,600 megawatt (MW) Godda plant in eastern India's Jharkhand state, set the deadline for receipt of dues as it faces challenges in importing coal necessary for power generation, three sources familiar with the matter said.

The company, owned by billionaire Gautam Adani, reduced the power supply to Bangladesh this month to 700-800 MW from around 1,400 MW, a senior official at the Bangladesh Power Development Board told Reuters.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak with the media.
Adani Power did not respond to Reuters queries on the payment deadline.
Bangladesh has been struggling to pay its bills due to costly fuel and goods imports since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The political turmoil that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August has also compounded its troubles.

"Last month, we cleared $96 million, and this month, a letter of credit has been opened for an additional $170 million," Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, the power and energy adviser in the interim Bangladesh government, told Reuters.
Last month, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Bangladesh was scrutinising its contract with Adani Power, as it was charging Bangladesh a rate nearly 27% higher than those of India's other private producers.

Adani Power Chief Financial Officer Dilip Kumar Jha, in a quarterly earnings conference call last week, said there were no issues related to the power supply to Bangladesh.
"We hope that there will be no further deterioration in terms of the outstanding," he said.

@LeonBlack08 I did consider opening a separate thread on this but thought you might regard it as duplication or not worthy of a separate thread, but if you are of the opinion that this news article justifies its own separate thread please go ahead.

@UKBengali @Nilgiri @Circadian Rhythm @AjayGhatak @mb444 @BananaRepublic @SoulSpokesman @MNZGamerX and others please share your thoughts on this.

For me it is clear that common sense has prevailed. We, Bangladeshis, need a stable supply of power and cannot afford disruption and the resultant suffering it brings.

@BananaRepublic

Kola bhai,

Hasina negotiated a fair deal with Adani

Tumne pukaara aur hum chale aaye, jaan hatheli par le aaye.

To begin, kudos to you and UKB dada for standing up to the juvenile delinquents from across the 3 countries.

Let us look at it holistically as you say. All countries, including BD need energy. BD because of its geography has limited capacity to generate solar, wind and hydro power. It doesnt have enough domestic coal and its oil/gas reserves are insufficient for its requirement pending new discoveries. BD is a densely populated and ecologically sensitive nation, it will never be possible to set up enough thermal or nuclear power plants even if fuel were easily available elsewhere.

So, BD is destined to import a large fraction of its energy- no problemo, so do Japan, Korea and many others. What BD needs to do is not to chase the chimera of energy self-sufficiency but to secure adequate energy at as reasonable a rate as possible and use that to power industries -textiles, light industry, services - which will pay for imports and provide employment to masses. This was the strategy that your visionary leader Bangabandhobi followed- and this is what a legitimately elected govt - hopefully there will be one such in the near future- will have to follow.

The Adani deal may be a tad more expensive than it could have been- I dont have all details but I will try to see if I can fish it out, but I suspect not by much.

This news, if true, suggests that for both Adani and BD, it is a reasonable deal.

Regards

The problem is Adani needs to be paid in US$. So you need to figure out first how the heck you are going to pay in $ . You do not set up the electricity first, then go on try to build industries to pay for it. There was no need for this source of electricity.

@Fallstuff

Please refer to my previous post. All of BD's energy-barring indigenous NG, has to be paid for in USD- either directly or indirectly. The only Q worth pondering is whether Adani is cheaper than average or not. The answer as far as I am aware is that it is.

Regards

"sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Bangladesh was scrutinising its contract with Adani Power, as it was charging Bangladesh a rate nearly 27% higher than those of India's other private producers."
Have they even considered the cost of infrastructure to transfer energy across borders? Are they really expecting us to give them electricity at the same rate as India’s domestic consumers? We’re using our own resources, impacting our environment, and they think they should pay what we pay within India? Bangladesh isn’t another Indian state; it’s natural they'd have to pay a bit more. This isn’t a charity!
