Bangladesh condemns violation of sovereignty in Gulf Arab countries

The "violation of sovereignty" in the context of Gulf migrant workers often refers to the Kafala (sponsorship) system, which grants private citizens or companies ("kafeels") excessive control over the legal status, mobility, and personal liberties of foreign workers, effectively acting as an extension of state power that overrides individual rights and sometimes the sovereignty of the worker's home country. These practices often lead to situations of forced labour, debt bondage, and human rights abuses that are inconsistent with international conventions.

Key issues highlighting these violations include:

The "Kafala System" & Restricted Freedom: The system links a worker’s legal status directly to their employer, meaning workers cannot change jobs or leave the country without the employer's permission.

Passport Confiscation: A nearly universal practice where employers retain worker passports to prevent them from leaving or complaining.

Wage Theft: Widespread failure to pay wages, or underpayment, which is rarely prosecuted, leaving millions of workers without their earnings.

"Forced Labour & Abuse": Workers, particularly in construction and domestic sectors, face long hours (up to 84 hours a week), poor living conditions, physical/sexual abuse, and, in some cases, forced labor, such as in Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project where over 21,000 deaths have been recorded.

@LeonBlack08

People of Bangladesh on the other hand are fully rooting for Iran. Even those living in Middle East. Many of the videos of Iran missile were uploaded by Bangladeshi migrants living in GCC and you can hear them cheering and hoping for a hit in Bengali.

If it is indeed the case, then the MEA should make a pitch to the Gulf states for progressive replacement of BD workers by Indian employees in future. Not out of any enmity to the BD state of BD people but in interest of the citizenry they serve. They would be failing in their duty to the Indian people whom they represent.

Regards

Please do not advocate for what is essentially economic warfare against Bangladesh and depriving Bangladeshis of the ability to earn a living and feed their families in friendly ally Muslim states.

This is deeply offensive and inflammatory.

The Kafala (sponsorship) system in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries ties migrant workers' legal status directly to employers, creating structural power imbalances that lead to widespread human rights violations. Common abuses include passport confiscation, withholding of wages, forced labor, restricted movement, and lack of legal recourse, often described as modern-day slavery.

Key Human Rights Violations under Kafala:
Forced Labor and Trafficking: Workers are often trapped through debt bondage, paying high recruitment fees, and contract substitution, where they face worse conditions than agreed upon.

Restricted Mobility: Workers cannot change jobs or leave the country without the employer’s permission (exit visas/No Objection Certificates), trapping many in abusive situations.

Attacking Gulfie Arabs are not a smart plan if you want to get the support from subcon. Cuz majority of the migrants in those regions (including from India) are Muslims and with each missile landing on some residential area there's a high chance a migrant will die.

Gulf remains the major source of remittances for remaining world 🕳️
