Bangladesh Lists 2 Riders For PM Rahman's India Visit. One Is Hasina Return

According to a statement from the Bangladeshi foreign ministry, officials from both countries have been in contact for several weeks about the possibility of a bilateral visit by Tarique Rahman to New Delhi.

Bangladesh said on Sunday that its Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's proposed visit to India is unlikely to go ahead unless New Delhi moves ahead with the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives wanted by Dhaka.

According to a statement from the Bangladeshi foreign ministry, officials from both countries have been in contact for several weeks about the possibility of a bilateral visit by Rahman to New Delhi.

Bangladesh foreign ministry spokesperson AKM Shahidul Karim said that the discussions had been affected by a public interaction involving Hasina in New Delhi on August 5.

"We are of the view that a propitious environment needs to be created for the visit," Karim said.

"To this end, we have requested the Indian authorities to expeditiously act on our request to extradite Sheikh Hasina and other fugitive criminals, and to hand over to Bangladesh the accused killers of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi in compliance with our bilateral extradition treaty. We are awaiting their response."

Two people, accused of killing political activist Osman Hadi, were arrested by the special task force (STF) of the West Bengal police from the border town of Bongaon in North 24 Parganas district in March.

We reiterate that we will continue to pursue our 'Bangladesh First' policy to promote friendly bilateral relations with other countries, including our neighbours, on the basis of sovereign equality, national dignity, non-interference in each other's internal affairs and mutual benefit," the statement continued.

Bangladesh said the process surrounding Rahman's possible visit had been "vitiated" by Hasina's open press interaction in New Delhi, despite her conviction by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity. The Centre made it clear that the press conference involving Hasina and Bangladeshi officials had nothing to do with the Indian government.

India has previously said that its extradition request from Bangladesh concerning Hasina remains "under examination".

Hasina was removed from power in August 2024 after a student-led uprising that grew into an anti-government movement. After her government fell, she fled to India, where she has remained.

This is good. I appreciate TR for this decision. If he keeps Bharat out of Bd affairs, he will become a people leader in no time just like his marhoom parents.

That TR's visit to India has been made conditional on the extradition of Sheikh Hasina is being projected as one of courage but is actually one of fear as the BNP are terrified of Hasina coming at her convenience in December. There was also a lot of pressure for TR to cancel this trip to India but behind the scenes India and US are pushing for Hasina's return to Bangladesh under certain conditions so TR is actually in a bind. The issues are much more complicated than the idiot Jamaatis are making out which is basically following an American agenda that will cause the most chaos in the country... Americans have a habit of speaking from both sides of their mouths.

I think that is unavoidable now as the BNP has walked into the Indian trap and made it everything about Hasina which is what the Indians probably wanted and behind the scenes the Jamaat is celebrating as Bangladesh heads towards chaos as December comes

Says who? Dalai Lama is the leader of a terrorist group and a dangerous seperatist. That's what a Chinese person would say. If he lands in China he will be promptly arrested for the charges maybe sentensed to death because these crimes carry death penalty in China. So we should respect Chinese laws and deport him there?

Now I'm not say SHW is Dalai Lama but she is a political refugee and she will not be forcefully removed from India. If she wishes she can leave for BD or any country for that matter.

Are you disputing that the Dalai Lama has never been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death ? If so, please provide evidence. If not, stop ranting for no reason.

Those are a lot of questions and the answers are not all yet clear. I will try to answer what I can. In Bangladesh street power is usually commensurate with overall public support but most importantly money which the AL certainly has a lot of. Hasina can pose a challenge but not so much Joy. The situation in the country has fragmented since August 2024 so I guess this would be a better than any other but I also think those backing Hasina and the AL for a comeback may feel they are running out of time. The BNP has always been the weaker of the 3 when it comes to street power and loyalty of the police and army is questionable and just in the last few weeks things seem to be falling apart internally with allegations of corruption and favoritism appearing but the gas and electricity crisis is eating away at popular support for the BNP. If things continue like this things don't look to good for the BNP Government.

Why do you tie your own fanciful theories into a gordian knot just to preserve their viability. I do enjoy the summary condemnation of "American agendas" on these threads, who apparently are now allied with jamatis and with awamis simultaneously.

Did it occur to you that America will probably work with whoever is in power in Dhaka for its own commercial interests? America has no need for Dhaka beyond that. Things really are that simple. That is not some slight against Dhaka but rather, a reflection of reality. Bangladesh and its deep state is not that relevant to and poses no tangible threat to American interests, in ANY of its potential manifestations (the ONLY cursory annoyance to Washington would be the "pro-Palestinian" slant of religious parties, yet we are repeatedly told here that jamaati is the one squatting in the same food trolley with Trump).
