Bangladesh: Two Soldiers Killed in Tank Firing Accident in Chattogram

Two Bangladesh Army soldiers were killed and an officer seriously injured in an accident during a field firing exercise at the Hathazari Field Firing Range in Chattogram on Wednesday as the ISPR said.


The accident occurred while a tank was firing as part of the exercise. Two soldiers died at the scene while the injured officer sustained serious injuries and is being airlifted by helicopter to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment.


The Bangladesh Army said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Further details including the identities of the deceased soldiers and the injured officer are expected to be released as the probe progresses.

Field firing exercises are routinely conducted by the Army as part of standard training for combat readiness though such incidents remain rare. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the accident resulted from mechanical failure, procedural lapse or another cause.


The Army has expressed condolences over the loss of the soldiers and reassured that appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings of the investigation. Officials are also expected to review safety protocols at training ranges following the incident to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Dude, these tanks as old as the country itself. Same with F-7 jets. Air force keep using them. Army is keeping using these too.

Seems like the probable cause was 'back flash", wherein when a shell is fired, some of the heat energy (in the form of a bright hot flash) escapes back through the breech.....it normally burns soldiers inside the turret and cooks off any ammo stored there.....such incidents are common not due to old vintage of ammo, but mainly due to improperly-made ammo casings and shell base (manufacturer fault).

I hope the top brass get the memo. We have hundreds of these in the service. Imagine the morale of other tankers knowing they have to get into these death traps.

Plus @Panzerkiel point about ammo manufacturer defect possibly leading to the incident. That needs to be investigated too.

It is possible but Not necessarily a manufacturing fault either, the ammo could have been stored improperly or mishandled as well, or there could have been an issue with the breech/barrel.

Really sad accident either way, I hope they will ensure the rest of the ammo is safe to use.

You are correct. That's why I didn’t mention manufacturing fault specifically.

We for a fact know chemical compounds do not stay the same over the years. Depending on the conditions, the chemical charge might deteriorate overtime and such a charge will create volatile excessive gas/pressure inside the barrel, and the breach might fail under such circumstances.

Chemistry tells us this very clearly.

This is a really really sad accident and such accident might happen anytime anywhere.
