Barclays cutting 5,000 jobs as it increases reliance on AI

I can see AI taking over repetitive factory jobs like sorting and assembly, but honestly, industrial robots already do that just fine without any AI. And when it comes to healthcare or construction though, I don't see AI replacing workers there anytime soon. Humanoid robots are nowhere near good enough for that yet.

Nothing can replace a human body and its capabilities on this earth. May be pure capitalist Societies will feel the brunt for some time, but they too will adjust.

AI is shafting most industries including IT which I am in. Best thing to do is learn a trade so I've started training up to be an electrician inshallah.

An electrician overseas I am guessing because the average salary for an electrician in Pakistan is 1500 rupees dihari.

This Sir. This is what we need to do....and honestly, if you are in any developed country, with high wages...it may just work out better. Physical labor is more satisfying than punching keys for hours and other office based task.

A lot of these back office roles, or even freelancer work like amatuer Graphics design or copywriting etc will be gone soon. I'm increasingly using AI in my day job to be more productive.

My colleagues and I were discussing how satisfying it must be to be paid a good wage to just lay bricks all day. We work in software development, and we were thinking of how nice it would be to be outdoors, no specifications, no bugs, no scope creep, just mortar and bricks.

In Pakistan bahi jaan 1500 rupees doesn't go very far. Like I said Electrician may be a good profession to get into for youngsters in UK but not in Pakistan.

But we are going off topic, non of this has to do with the subject being discussed.

Precisely - Having worked a long time in corporate, quite frankly I've had enough for the following reasons...

1) Long hours sitting takes a toll on your health. Health is everything and if you lose it what's the point of the money?
2) Office politics - Can't stand this. I've worked under multi people who haven't a clue what they're doing. Not being able to work to a style and environment that suits me is just no longer worth it. It's time I be my own boss. Life is too short and working for others gets you nowhere
3) I've seen AI over the past few years mature and decimate jobs. I'd rather not work in an environment where I'm constantly having to look over my shoulder to see if I'm next on the chopping block.

Out in the cold and wet ??? at 50+ doing back breaking work - I don't think so! Grass is not always greener :)..

Switch to a career in translation.

If you are proficient in English, Urdu, and Chinese—and can even understand a few Chinese dialects—you can earn a very high income.

Have you ever heard of Google Translate ? ..lol ...

I have a tough Audit Job in a big MNC Bank . Working across teams and regions, deadlines , everyday new stuff to learn....and when I look at Cab drivers ( I am based in Dublin), I wonder , what a lovely job they have...tax free income...you are your own boss...but I am on the verge of hanging up...hoping to last 2 more years of this grind...and than Peace. And yes, AI adoption in my role is not a choice...one of the biggest investors in AI is my organization....

I too think / infact yearn for this sort of physical job....could not break into football...too old now...punishing physical labor seems peaceful.to me

In fact, whether it is Google Translate, any other translation tool, or even AI-powered tools, none are as reliable as human translators. At present, the gap between them remains very large!
Human language is a microcosm of human societies and cultures—a capacity that translation tools and AI can never replace.

My English is not very good, so I rely on translation tools to communicate here.
Typically, I first refine my thoughts and casual, spoken-style language into standard, formal Chinese—a step that no translation tool can replicate. I then use a translation tool to convert this into English. Afterward, I translate that English text back into Chinese to verify that it accurately reflects my original intent.
In reality, however, even with this elaborate process, many of my statements here still lead to misunderstandings caused by translation errors.

Furthermore, human translators today often take on various other practical roles—such as acting as local guides or assisting with day-to-day tasks.
