British police arrest five men at US air base in major incident

FAIRFORD, England, Sept 27 (Reuters) - British police arrested five men near a US air base on suspicion of explosive and terrorism offences on Sunday after a tip-off that three vans had been heading to the military airfield which has been used to strike Iran.
Counter ‌terrorism detectives leading the investigation said police had received a call about three suspicious vehicles which appeared to be travelling towards RAF Fairford in the west of England in the early hours of Sunday.

Five men were arrested by armed officers and later held on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act. Police said they believed the incident was now contained.
"We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody," Counter Terrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator Vicki Evans said in a statement.

"As you would expect we are working closely with ⁠our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident."
Police said a 400-metre cordon was in place around the base as the bomb disposal unit investigated the vans. Local residents were evacuated and armed officers were patrolling the site

The British government, which has given authorisation to the US to use bombers based at Fairford to strike Iranian missile sites that were attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz, said Prime Minister Andy Burnham was being updated on the incident.
Britain said in July its armed forces were ready to protect the country from any attack after Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned it not to allow US bombers to fly from Fairford, saying any base used to launch attacks would be a legitimate target.
Police have not said who they believed was involved in Sunday's incident, in which residents of a nearby village were woken in the early hours and 85 homes evacuated.

The base was ‌blocked by ⁠armed police while large machinery also prevented access and Reuters witnesses said security had been increased at other bases used by the US, with armoured vehicles and soldiers at the gates of RAF Lakenheath in eastern England.

"The emergency services have well-rehearsed plans for dealing with major incidents," Gloucestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone told reporters. "A cordon is in place as a precaution and the public can expect to see an emergency services presence in the area for ⁠some time."
The Daily Mail website carried a photograph of five men without shirts who it said had been arrested.
A spokesperson for the US Air Force declined to discuss specific force protection measures.

"The 501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our ⁠US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families," the spokesperson said.
"We constantly assess a variety of factors that determine what measures we institute or modify to protect our installations, our people and their families."
British ministers have also previously briefed providers of critical infrastructure on the threat posed by Russia, with ⁠the government increasingly concerned about possible sabotage operations and cyberattacks.
Russia denies mounting hybrid attacks on Western nations.
A British military air base in central England was broken into in June 2025 by the Palestine Action protest group, which has since been proscribed as a terrorist organisation.

Exclusive: Gloucestershire farmer feels lucky to be unharmed after she encountered suspicious group near RAF air base


Driving home from a party in the early hours, a local farmer came across three seemingly abandoned white vans blocking a quiet country road.

Confused, she turned her car around. As she did so, she saw a group of masked men in balaclavas scattering into the trees and across the fields towards RAF Fairford.

She accelerated away and called the police. When she stopped, she also messaged her local WhatsApp group and warned people to lock their doors.

Less than 25 minutes later, the men had been arrested. Video footage shows five men, shirtless, sitting on the ground in handcuffs in the middle of a road surrounded by counter-terror police.

Armed police officers began going door to door. By the next morning, a large cordon was in place, roadblocks were set up across the area and the entire community had been forced to evacuate as Army bomb disposal units investigated the suspicious vans.

The men were taken into custody, arrested under the explosives act, and later further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

“Thinking about it now, and what could have happened if they had tried to stop me from driving away, I am quite lucky,” the farmer told The Telegraph.

“It is pretty incredible, realising you had a brush with potential terrorists face to face and may have foiled a terrorist plot. It was clear they had just got there. Thank God we spotted them.”

She said the vans struck her as being suspicious from the moment she saw them, as a phone number and lettering on the back of the vehicles appeared to be fake.

The eyewitness says she was immediately suspicious of the three white vans

She said: “I just thought what the hell are they doing… I saw a group of Middle Eastern-looking young guys running off through the trees. Some of them had masks or balaclavas on, and they all scattered ahead of us as we drove back past.

“Some of them ran into the fields, and some of them turned to run towards the air base. We realised this was something pretty serious. We knew the air base had a credible threat of a terrorist attack before last night. So as soon as I saw them I was worried.

“I mean, you don’t see masked men running around at half one in the morning in the countryside near a secure air base and not have concerns.”

One of the white vans was labelled “FUEL 2YOU” in red lettering, with a phone number.

However, the number appeared to be one digit short and was not recognised when called by Telegraph reporters. The company name does not return any Google search results, and cannot be found on Companies House.

In a statement, Gloucestershire Constabulary said it was only alerted to the men’s presence by a phone call from a member of the public.

RAF Fairford is the US air force’s command outpost for operations from Europe. In the summer, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned Britain not to allow US B1 bombers to fly from the base.

It is understood that counter-terror police are investigating whether the suspected bomb plot is linked to the Iranian regime.

The day before the vans arrived in the village, reports started circulating that the base had been put on high alert.




The farmer, who did not wish to be named because of concerns for her safety, said security around the air base had been ramped up in the past week.

She said: “We thought something was going on as they had housed B1 bombers at the base until earlier this week when they were moved. And then suddenly they started blocking entrances to the air base.

“They started blocking those with diggers and tractors and things early in the week, which seems a bit Dad’s Army to be honest.

“By Friday they had sent all their civilian staff home, and then because this is a small village, we started noticing people who weren’t local and the suspicion was they were plain clothes police of some kind. We all knew something unusual was going on.”

On Saturday evening another local in the village had been stopped at gunpoint at a roadblock by a group of American soldiers.

“They made them all put their hands out of the car, identify themselves, and then ultimately made them turn them round and would let them drive home that way. So we obviously knew they were pretty worried about something.”


Tristan Wilkinson, the Cotswold district councillor for Lechlade, Kempsford and Fairford South, said it was clear that security at the air base had been increased in recent days.

He added: “I think the one thing we can say is that if you look around the base, they’ve put heavy machinery in place. That’s unusual. That tells me that the base was on a heightened level of security.”

By Sunday morning, 85 houses had been told to evacuate to a nearby leisure centre and counter terror police had set up road blocks throughout the area and at the RAF base. Police declared a major incident shortly after 8am.

A bomb disposal robot was seen examining the three white vans which remained in the middle of the road. The rear doors of two of the vans were open, and large black containers could be seen scattered around.

Counter-terror police, who have now taken over the investigation, said a 400-metre cordon was in place around the vehicles.


At Cirencester leisure centre, families gathered in a cafe, checking their phones for updates throughout the afternoon.

Among them were a number of elderly residents and children, some of whom were still in their pyjamas. The cordon is expected to remain in place for some time.

Jo, who has lived in Whelford for 18 years, said she was evacuated from her home at around 7am on Sunday.

She said: “We were asleep and they were just banging on our door. They said it was a critical incident and we’ve got to leave straight away, and they basically wouldn’t leave the doorstep until we left. We just had to throw our clothes on and come. We didn’t know anything.

“[The police] literally waited [at the door]. I didn’t even brush my teeth. We didn’t know what, but we knew it must be serious.”

Asst Chief Constable Richard Ocone, of Gloucestershire Constabulary, said: “Work to establish the full nature of this incident is ongoing and we are in constant communication with our partners locally and nationally.

“Gloucestershire police’s focus at this time is on the local community, and I’d like to thank the residents who have left their homes this morning for their understanding and support.

“We appreciate the disruption this will have caused, and would like to reassure them we are working as quickly as we can to get them back in their properties.”
