The Denza Z9 GT wagon from BYD started pre-sales in China, priced at 339,800 yuan (47,600 USD). It’s available in PHEV and BEV variants with around 1,000 hp. Later, the Z9 GT will enter Europe to compete with cars from legacy brands.

Denza was initially a 50-50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker distanced from the JV in 2021. Currently, BYD holds 90% of Denza, positioning it as a global high-end brand. Its model line comprises three vehicles: the D9 minivan and the N7 & the N8 crossovers. The Denza Z9 GT wagon has become the latest addition to the Denza’s line.

Denza Z9 GT exterior and dimensions

Denza Z9 GT PHEV
The Denza Z9 GT is a highly anticipated newcomer to the Chinese car market. It made headlines several times because of its decent powertrain and two refrigerators inside. Audi veteran Wolfgang Egger desiged this NEV station wagon. It has a sleek body with a sloped bonnet and a slanted roofline. Other features are elongated headlights, a single taillight unit, retractable door handles, and optional cameras instead of side-view mirrors.

The exterior of the Denza Z9 GT became a point of comparison with the Porsche Panamera. Moreover, the BYD station wagon stays in line close to Porsche’s hatchback in terms of size. The Denza Z9 GT boasts hefty dimensions of 5180/1990/1480 mm with a wheelbase of 3125 mm. The PHEV variant is even longer (5195 mm) due to more aggressive bumpers. For clarity, the Z9 GT is 128 mm longer, 53 mm wider, and 57 mm higher than the Panamera.

The Denza Z9 GT is offered in four exterior colors: silver, white, gray, and black. It rides on R21 wheels with 255/40 front and 275/40 rear tires. This wagon is equipped with air suspension as standard. The Z9 GT’s rear axle can turn up to 20 degrees. As a result, its turning radius is just 4.62 meters. The Z9 GT also has frameless doors.

Denza Z9 GT interior

The interior of the Denza Z9 GT is well-known for having two refrigerators dedicated to front and rear passengers. However, there are other interesting features. Since the Z9 GT has optional cameras instead of side-view mirrors, there are two additional screens on the door cards. The center console of this station wagon has three more screens. One of them is dedicated to the front passenger. The rear-view mirror also has a built-in monitor.

The center tunnel of the Denza Z9 GT has loads of carbon fiber, two 50W wireless phone charging pads, a retractable gear selector, a set of physical buttons, and a pair of cup holders. The steering wheel of the Z9 GT has four spokes and a D shape. Speaking about the front refrigerator, it has a 4-liter capacity. It can cool up to minus 6 degrees Celsius and heat up to 50 degrees Celsius. According to Denza officials, this fridge can fit six Coca-Cola bottles.

The second row of the Denza Z9 GT has lots of leg space and an independent touch screen dedicated to climate control. The second-row seats are heated, ventilated, and massaged. They can be electrically adjusted. The refrigerator here offers a 10-liter capacity, suitable for four vine bottles. This large refrigerator has a drawback as it occupies space in the trunk. It also means you won’t be able to fold the second-row seats down. It also has a Devialet sound system.

Denza Z9 GT powertrain

The Denza Z9 GT has both PHEV and BEV variants. Its plug-in hybrid version stands on the e3 platform with the 5-gen DM system. It has a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine for 152 kW (203 hp) under the hood. It is paired with three electric motors: one in the front and two in the rear. The combined power output of the Z9 GT’s e-motors is 640 kW (858 hp). The total power output of the PHEV system has yet to be revealed. But it is about 1,000 hp. The PHEV variant of this station wagon has a combined range of up to 1,100 km.

The Denza Z9 GT EV stands on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo platform. It also has three electric motors with increased power output. The peak power of this car reaches 710 kW (952 hp). Its range is 630 km (CLTC). The zero-to-hundred acceleration is 3.4 seconds. It is 0.2 seconds faster than the Z9 GT PHEV. According to Denza, the Z9 GT has completed the moose test at a speed of 93.6 km/h.

Denza Z9 GT prices

The Denza Z9 GT is available for pre-order in five trim levels with a price range of 339,800 – 419,800 yuan (47,600 – 58,850 USD).

  • Denza Z9 GT PHEV Pro – 339,800 yuan (47,600 USD)
  • Denza Z9 GT PHEV Max – 369,800 yuan (51,850 USD)
  • Denza Z9 GT PHEV Ultra – 419,800 yuan (58,50 USD)
  • Denza Z9 GT EV Pro – 359,800 yuan (50,450 USD)
  • Denza Z9 GT EV Max – 389,800 yuan (54,650 USD)
Denza Z9 sedan
The Denza Z9 GT will start deliveries in September this year. Its closest domestic rival is the Zeekr 001 liftback. Later, the Z9 GT will also enter Europe to rival cars from legacy brands like Porsche Panamera. The Z9 GT will also have a sedan variant shown during the pre-sales start.

For about the last week, there have been a lot of rumors about General Motors in China. These suggest that GM will retrench its operations in the Middle Kingdom and will sell the Buick brand to SAIC. However, the GM joint venture is not SAIC’s only problem, as evidenced by the 37.16% year-on-year drop In sales in July – a drop shared by almost every major business unit and not just the joint ventures. Furthermore the drop is not just symptomatic of the switch from ICE to new energy vehicles with NEV sales also declining.
Sales at the GM joint venture saw the greatest drop with a fall of 82.42% and the sales for the year so far are down 55.14%. This stands in stark contrast to the performance of SAIC’s other main joint venture with Volkswagen. Although July was a black spot with a decline of 18.18% the overall decline for the year is negligible at just 1.53%.

Table showing the sales in July and for the year so far compared to the same period in 2023 by business unit
The Volkswagen joint venture fared much better than most of SAIC’s own brands. SAIC Motor’s passenger vehicle division, which is made up of the MG, Roewe, and Rising brands so far this year has sales down by 20.19% and in July saw a 29.95% decrease. Both the Maxus and IM brands are reported separately. Maxus fared nearly as badly, with a 23.34% year-on-year decline for July, but the reduction is a more modest 11.30% for the year so far. The IM brand is one of the few bright spots for SAIC. July sales were up by 142.74%, but at just 4,180, they hardly make much difference to the overall figure for SAIC. It should be noted that July’s performance for IM is very much in line with the brand’s performance so far this year, which has seen an increase of 131.34%.
Going forward, SAIC will be increasingly reliant on the GM Wuling joint venture. Sales for the year so far are 646,009 cars, an increase year on year of 2.31, and now account for the largest single share, with the only other unit coming close being Volkswagen. Even though the performance for the year so far is up, July sales for the unit were down and by one of the larger percentages at 31.72%.
The problem does not just lie with domestic sales; both the Indonesian branch of the Wuling JV and the Indian branch of MG experienced drops not only in July but also for the year as a whole. The total figures for both these branches are not particularly significant but what is more worrying is that the overall figure for exports and overseas business have seen a significant decline at 15.77% year-on-year for July and 9.65% for the year so far. This indicates that the problem is far more deep-rooted than a reduction due to the implementation of EU tariffs on EV imports in July.
What shows SAIC’s problems more than anything else is the figures for new energy vehicles. Last month, retail sales of new energy vehicles broke the fifty percent barrier for the first time with a figure of around 51%. What we see with SAIC is a decline of 21.85% during July for new energy vehicles, although sales for the year are up by 14.91%. A crude penetration figure purely based on total sales and not excluding exports is 28.2%, clearly well below the general level of the Chinese market – the percentage for the year to date is even worse at 25.6%.
There currently appears to be a rot setting in at SAIC. The 2023 annual report showed operating income had increased by 0.72%, but net profit was down by 12.48%, and sales were down on 2022 levels. Sales are obviously further down this year, and first quarter figures for operating income were down 1.95%, and there was a 2.48% year-on-year decline in net profit.
SAIC in 2023 implemented a three-year action plan for the development of new energy vehicles. Under the plans, the sales target for 2025 is 3.5 million new energy vehicles, but in the first seven months of this year, the sales only amounted to 532,133. If it is to achieve anywhere near such a target for next year, SAIC needs to sell far more. The company is also aiming to stem the decline in ICE sales.

Editor’s note:

On the face of it SAIC‘s number one problem is its inability to pivot to new energy vehicles successfully. There are, though, other problems that are perhaps not as obvious. Firstly SAIC is now very much dependent on the Wuling joint venture as its number one sales generator. The problem with this is that the brand specializes in cheaper vehicles, which will restrict profits. Being a joint venture these profits will have to be shared with the other partners although in the case of this JV SAIC has the controlling 50.1%. Ultimately SAIC needs to be less dependent on joint ventures and more self-sufficient which is why the decline in sales of the company’s own brands, with the exception of IM, is all the more worrying.

Wuling launched the Youth Edition of the Hongguang Mini EV on August 20, priced at 40,800 yuan (5,700 USD). It is a 215 km range version of the micro EV sensation and, despite its name, has many more grown-up car features than the bare-bones Mini EV that first launched in 2020. Most noteworthy features are that the Youth Edition comes with fast charging ability and dual airbags.

Being the Hongguang Mini EV, the car comes in a choice of 5 funky color schemes: milk apricot coffee, light mango yellow, avocado green, white peach pink, and iris blue. These are then highlighted by features such as the white around the headlights, number plate, and parts of the rear, along with the black B and C-pillars and Mirrors.

There is a choice of two interior color schemes: milk toffee and brownie black. Rather than being sickly sweet, they are more retro, and the seats have houndstooth-textured fabric, which makes the car look rather like a 1970s reject. Other than the aesthetics, there are no major changes to the interior of the car, with the Mini EV retaining just a driver’s display unit. One notable feature is that the youth edition has a dual airbag setup, where both the driver and front passenger have airbags.

Also featured on the Youth Edition is fast charging. This was first introduced to the Mini EV on the 2024 model year Macron version at the end of last year. Being the 215 km (see specs) range version of the Mini EV, the car comes with a 17.3 kWh battery pack. Fast charging allows it to charge from 30 to 80% SOC in 35 minutes. The fast charging port is located alongside the slow charging port behind a flap in the front grille of the car.

The Youth Edition of the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV uses a 30 kW rear-mounted electric motor that delivers up to 92 Nm of torque. Maximum speed is still capped at 100 km/h, and there is no quoted time for actually getting up to that speed.

Dimensions of the Youth Edition remain largely unchanged at 3064, 1493, and 1614 mm (l/w/h), with a wheelbase of 2010 mm. It should be noted, however, that the height is slightly lower than the 1629 mm of other 2024 versions of the car.

A video clip showcasing a car from SAIC’s IM Motors moving sideways into a parking space has captured the attention of online viewers, sparking widespread interest and discussion in China.

A recent video has catapulted IM Motors into the spotlight, showing their vehicle executing a sideways parking maneuver that has astounded netizens. The footage features a woman exiting an IM Motors test vehicle while holding a bouquet. After a gentle push to close the car door, the sedan glides effortlessly sideways into a parking spot. This smooth lateral movement, achieved with the front and rear wheels pointing in different directions, is facilitated by reverse wheel rotation and precise torque control.

The video has gone viral, with viewers commenting, “If it weren’t shot from multiple angles, I’d think it was CGI!” and “Parallel parking just got a lot easier—this is a game changer.”

The technology driving this innovation is IM Motors’ digital chassis. This advanced system manages vehicle movement across three axes at six degrees, allowing the IM L6 (see specs) to parallel park more easily. This simplifies parallel parking and reduces the required parking space length by 11%, making it especially advantageous for novice drivers.

Integral to this capability is the L6’s four-wheel steering system, which significantly pivots the rear wheels, enabling a diagonal “crab-walk mode.” This system enhances maneuverability with a tight turning radius of just 4.99 meters, easing parking in confined spaces.

This crab-like sideways movement represents a significant leap in automotive technology, offering a new level of convenience and capability. This innovation sets a new benchmark in intelligent driving technology, transforming the ease of parking in tight spots and setting the stage for future advancements in vehicle maneuverability. The exact model in the clip remains to be confirmed. However, it highlights the vehicle’s ability to move horizontally, a function expected to be a standout feature in IM’s upcoming models.

At the end of last month, we reported on a new BYD Han model, now being referred to as the forthcoming Han L. Further information and spy shots of the forthcoming new model, including interior pictures, have now emerged. Chinese sources suggest the car will be unveiled later this year and will be sold alongside the BYD Han.

From the interior spy shots, we can see that the overall configuration of the Han L is similar to the Qin L. Although, brown in color, the steering wheel of the Han L seems very similarly shaped and has a 4-spoke design as with the Qin L. There is also an LCD instrument panel and a floating infotainment screen on the dashboard. The center console area is partly exposed, as is a small segment of the door panel. From these, we can see that the car has a brown interior, although the brown seems to be of varying shades. That of the wheel matches the part visible on the door panel and it also looks as if part of the dashboard may be in the same color, however, the cubbyhole lid on the center console is a much darker brown. We can clearly see two cup holders on the center console, and the area around the drive selector appears to have a relatively large number of control buttons. The center console is a floating design with an open storage compartment below. We can learn little from the second-row spy shot other than that the legroom appears reasonable.

With the exterior still being camouflaged, we can tell little more about the outside of the car. Both the front and rear light clusters appear to be temporary units for testing. We can, though, see that the mirrors are now mounted on the actual metal of the doors rather than coming from the window line as on the current Han.

According to Autohome the new BYD will come both in all-electric and PHEV versions. In the case of the PHEV, the Han L will be equipped with BYD’s DM 5.0 technology powertrain. Given the size of the car, this will likely mean the more powerful version based around the 1.5T engine, which has a maximum power of 115 kW, along with probably a 200 kW electric motor. An EV version would use the e-platform 3.0 Evo and its associated technology, such as the 12-in-1 electric drive system.

It should be noted that there may be very little difference in size between the BYD Han L and Han. Recently, the DM 5.0 technology versions of the Song L and Song Plus DM-i launched at the same event, and there is a 5 mm difference in length between the two cars.

Chinese media speculates that the Chery Fulwin T11 will launch at the Chengdu Auto Show later this month. This follows information shared by a blogger named Torpedo 2954, who claims that the exterior styling of the Fulwin T11 is finalized and gives the dimensions for the new car.

The Chery Fulwin T11 will be a flagship SUV for the brand. Chery first displayed a concept of the T11 at last year’s 2023 Chery Fulwin New Energy Night. It’s claimed that the new car will have dimensions of 5190, 1995, 1800 mm (l/w/h), and a wheelbase of 3100 mm. It is by far the largest SUV so far produced by Chery and forms part of the Fulwin sub-brand, which is now dedicated to new energy vehicles and, to date, has solely consisted of PHEV models.

Posting and renderings by blogger Torpedo 2954
Official information indicates that the T11 is based on the E0X platform. It will use Chery’s Kunpeng Super Hybrid C-DM plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 1.5T engine and electric motor. The engine has a thermal efficiency of 44.5%, has a peak power of 115 kW (154 hp), and can deliver 220 Nm or torque. For the T11, this will it’s claimed be matched with a 200 kW electric motor to provide an all-wheel drive system. Fuel consumption Is 5.9 l/100 km, 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 5.9 seconds, and all-electric range is more than 200 km with a comprehensive range of more than 1400 km. Reports indicate that the T11 will use front double wishbone suspension and at the rear multi-link suspension.

The renderings shown by the blogger reveal a car with more traditional door handles as opposed to the concealed door handles on the concept car. Car News China finds this hard to believe, seeing that the T11 is the flagship model and all Fulwin models currently on sale have concealed handles, although it should be noted that the E06 concept does have semi-concealed door handles.

Chery Fulwin T11 concept
According to various reports, internal features will include dual panoramic roofs, six-screen linkage, and second-row seats with lateral and longitudinal adjustment. The Fulwin T11 is also claimed to have an NOP urban driving function.

Just when it seemed that the empire was fully in charge and that the clone wars were finally over, 2024 has seen another attack of the clones. The latest trooper is the Chery Tiggo 7 Sport, which looks suspiciously like a Land Rover. Chinese media say that the car will launch in September, and it has already been seen at dealers.

Where the Chery Tiggo 7 Sport most resembles a Land Rover is at the front. The mesh grille could almost be straight off the British off-roader, which is furthered by the air inlet design and the narrow bumper and skid plate. The daytime running lights are also similar to those of the Range Rover Evoque.

Although it is called a Chery Tiggo 7, the Sport version is not very closely related to other cars bearing the Tiggo 7 name but far more resembles the Chery Tansuo 06, which is known overseas as the Jaecoo J7. From the latest Ministry of Industry and Information Technology listing information, we can see that the Chery Tansuo 06 offers a similar front design as an option to the Tiggo 7 Sport.

Chery Tansuo 06 listing showing an option for a grille similar to the Chery Tiggo 7 Sport
At the sides the two cars are very similar with hidden door handles and roof racks. The Tiggo 7 Sport though is more aimed at urban users whereas the Tansuo 06 has more of an outdoor image. Despite the Tiggo 7 Sport’s more urban focus it has a storage compartment mounted between the C and D-pillars on the car’s left-hand side.

Inside, the two cars are nearly identical. The Chery Tiggo 7 Sport has a floating instrument panel and a large Infotainment screen, along with a chunky drive selector and through-type air conditioning.

Powertrain details for the Chery Tiggo 7 Sport have not been announced, but it’s expected that the car will share the same setup as the Tansuo 06. This means it will have a 1.6 T turbocharged engine with 145 kW maximum power and torque of up to 290 Nm. The engine is matched with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox. Prices are expected to be around 100,000 yuan (14,000 USD).

It should be noted that Chery is the joint venture partner of Jaguar Land Rover in China.

BYD’s luxury brand, Yangwang, has achieved a significant milestone with its U9 supercar (see specs), which recently completed an intensive six-month testing program at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Known as the “world’s toughest testing ground,” the Nürburgring is notorious for its demanding terrain, featuring sharp elevation changes and many tight corners.

The U9 underwent extensive fine-tuning during this period, with the Yangwang team optimizing its performance on over 70 corners and enhancing capabilities across more than 30 critical track sections. Nearly 150 technical aspects were rigorously tested to ensure the U9 could confidently take on this legendary circuit.Yangwang targets to challenge Nürburgring laptime at a later date.

Building on this achievement, Yangwang celebrated another significant moment last week as the first batch of U9 supercars rolled off the production line. The facility was constructed to meet the exceptional production standards required for this high-performance vehicle, featuring advanced areas for body assembly and final assembly and a unique cleanroom dedicated to producing the U9’s carbon fiber monocoque. This cleanroom meets medical-grade humidity and temperature control standards, ensuring precision in manufacturing the U9’s intricate carbon fiber shell.

The production of the U9 is a testament to Yangwang’s dedication to cutting-edge automotive engineering. The vehicle’s carbon fiber monocoque, one of the largest in the world, is crafted using an advanced bonding technology that Yangwang has perfected over a decade.

BYD’s Yangwang U8 (see specs) has made a bold entrance into the luxury SUV market, showcasing a dual powertrain that seamlessly merges electric and petrol engines for unmatched versatility. What truly sets the U8 apart is its Intelligent Individual Wheel Drive (IWD) system, powered by four electric motors. It provides exceptional stability and control even in the most challenging conditions, like a tire blowout. Among its standout features, the U8 can float for 30 minutes and move forward at 3 km/h using its wheels for propulsion—an extraordinary achievement in the SUV world. Additionally, its ability to execute a 180-degree “tank turn” highlights BYD’s relentless pursuit of innovation in automotive engineering.

Priced at 1,089,000 RMB (approximately 150,000 USD), the Yangwang U8 has also established itself as the most expensive Chinese mass-produced electric vehicle, solidifying its position as a technological marvel. Since its launch in September 2023, the U8 has captured the market’s attention for its performance and unique capabilities.

Exterior Design

Wolfgang Egger, who has a background in Lamborghini, Audi, and Alfa Romeo, designed the Yangwang U8. The design combines futuristic and rugged elements, resulting in a functional SUV. The U8 features a prominent front grille with the Yangwang badge, sculpted body lines, flared wheel arches, and high ground clearance, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. LED headlights and taillights are included for enhanced visibility.

The SUV’s dimensions are substantial, measuring 5319 mm in length, 2050 mm in width, and 1930 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3050 mm. The design also prioritizes practicality. The U8 is equipped with roof rails for additional cargo space, alloy wheels, side steps for easier access, and an integrated rear spoiler for improved aerodynamics.

The Interior

The U8’s interior combines traditional Chinese design elements with modern comfort. Features like calligraphy accents and porcelain-inspired details give it a distinct character compared to other SUVs. The cabin uses high-quality natural materials and includes advanced technology, such as an interface powered by a 4nm chip and smart voice interaction.

Standard features include a Dynaudio sound system and advanced front seats. The luxury version adds seat memory, ventilation, heating, eight-way electric adjustment, reclining rear seats, and heated stone massage seats for enhanced comfort. The U8 is designed as a five-seater, and a three-row version is expected later.

Storage

The BYD Yangwang U8 features a trunk capacity of up to 1,000 liters, providing substantial space for luggage, groceries, and other items.

Driving Experience

U8’s 360-degree camera system is crucial for navigating tight turns and gauging distances. It provides a clear view during maneuvers, ensuring both safety and precision. The U8’s suspension, with its electric hydraulic system, adjusts in real time to maintain balance, reducing body roll and enhancing driving confidence. While the cabin is impressively quiet, dampening road noise and vibrations, the stiff suspension can make bumps more noticeable.

The U8 offers three driving modes: comfort, economy, and sports. Each mode alters the suspension and power delivery to suit different driving conditions. In sports mode, the car lowers and firms up the suspension, offering a more dynamic and engaging driving experience. The U8 also features Level 2.5 autonomous driving capabilities, including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). It manages urban driving well but requires the driver to stay attentive for manual intervention when needed.

Performance-wise, the U8 is formidable. It combines a 2.0L turbo internal combustion engine with four electric motors, delivering a total of 880 kW (1,180 hp) and 1,280 Nm of peak torque. This setup enables the 3,490 kg U8 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 200 km/h. Such performance metrics not only highlight its power but also its capability to handle a variety of driving conditions with agility and confidence.

Despite its size, the U8 is quite maneuverable, with a good turning radius and an active steering system that makes parking and navigating tight spaces easier. The electric range of about 120 kilometers is sufficient for city driving, though longer trips require using the petrol engine. The U8 provides reasonable fuel efficiency in hybrid mode, making it practical for daily commutes and longer journeys. Overall, the YangWang U8 balances advanced features with solid handling and comfort.

Battery Range

The BYD Yangwang U8 has a Comprehensive Long Trip Capability (CLTC) range of up to 1,000 km, providing extensive coverage for long journeys and off-road adventures.

Safety Features

The Yangwang U8 Premium Edition includes safety features such as all-terrain tank turns, tire blowout stabilization, and emergency flotation. It also uses BYD’s “e⁴” individual wheel drive (IWD) technology, which redistributes torque for stability in case of a tire puncture and allows for a 180-degree “tank turn.” The vehicle is equipped with Disus-P active suspension, which can increase ground clearance by 15 cm and enable wading through water up to 1,000 mm deep. The U8 also features the Nvidia Drive Orin SoC, which provides high computational power and integrates 38 sensors, including three lidar units.

Dealership Experience

After scheduling a test drive through Yangwang’s official website, a representative promptly contacted us. However, the assigned representative was based in Shenzhen despite my request for a test drive in Zhuhai, which is 90 minutes away. The Shenzhen representative needed help connecting me with the Zhuhai dealership. Luckily, a Fang Cheng Bao representative in Zhuhai directed me to the local Yangwang dealership. Once there, the experience was smooth and pleasant.

Conclusion

BYD’s global strategy for the Yangwang brand is clear, with the U8 making a prominent debut at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show. The brand is also expanding its footprint in China, opened more than 90 new stores across 40 cities, including repurposing former premium showrooms like those of Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin. The U8 aims to compete with high-end models such as the Dongfeng M-Hero 917 in China and the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon in Europe. Notable endorsements, including a test drive by California Governor Gavin Newsom, have further boosted its visibility.

The Yangwang U8 marks a significant step forward for BYD in the luxury SUV sector. Its blend of advanced technology, luxury features, and off-road capabilities sets a new benchmark in the premium SUV market. The U8 represents a significant milestone for Chinese high-end new energy brands by redefining traditional notions of rugged SUVs. As BYD continues to build its Yangwang brand and prepare for global expansion, the U8 is well-positioned to impact the luxury SUV market substantially.

Established in 1958 by FAW Group, Hongqi is China’s oldest luxury car brand. It initially served high-ranking officials and dignitaries. Early models like the CA72 and CA770 gained prominence in the 1960s and 1970s. Production ceased in 1981 but was revived in the mid-1990s. Hongqi has expanded its lineup to include modern luxury sedans and SUVs.

The 2024 Hongqi H6, part of this modern lineup, comes in five trims, priced from 179,800 to 239,800 yuan (approximately 24,800 to 33,000 USD). The 2024 model retains its design and powertrain while offering upgraded features.

Exterior Design

The 2024 Hongqi H6 is a medium-sized sedan with dimensions of 4990 mm in length, 1880 mm in width, and 1455 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2920 mm. It runs on 225/50 R18 tires with optional red Brembo calipers and features a stylish sliding sunroof.

At the front, the H6 is distinguished by a large grille adorned with matrix elements and a narrow, luminous vertical Hongqi logo, which stands out mainly at night. The vehicle’s rear features an electric tailgate, through-type taillights, a slightly upturned ducktail spoiler, and a center-mounted dual exhaust system. The doors produce a tinny sound when closed, hinting at a lighter, less robust construction.

The Interior

Inside the H6, the two-tone cockpit layout remains unchanged, featuring a 12.6-inch central control screen, a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The entire series now has the Hongqi 3.0 Plus intelligent network system, offering voice control, recognition, and customized navigation. An optional advanced driving assistance package is also available.

The H6 has many features, including 253-color ambient lights, tire pressure monitoring, front and rear parking radars, cruise control, keyless entry, one-button start, heated external mirrors, and integrated sports seats. Unfortunately, a lot of hard plastics are used on top of the dashboard.

Storage

The trunk offers a substantial volume of 592 liters.

Driving Experience

The 2024 Hongqi H6 delivers a controlled and responsive driving experience thanks to its well-engineered chassis. The suspension system, particularly the CDDC adjustable damping on the higher trim, is finely tuned, allowing the car to adapt between firm, sporty handling and a softer, more comfortable ride.

In sport mode, the high-output 2.0T engine provides immediate power delivery, making it easy to merge onto highways or pass slower vehicles. The steering is sharp, with a direct feel that gives the driver precise control, while the chassis remains composed even during spirited driving. The sedan’s size doesn’t compromise its agility; it feels planted and responsive through corners. However, tire noise was very noticeable even at lower speeds, which may dampen the driving spirit.

Switching to comfort mode, the H6’s suspension softens, effectively absorbing road imperfections and providing a serene ride, especially on longer journeys or rough city streets. The interior remains quiet, with minimal wind noise, contributing to a relaxed driving environment.

Advanced driver assistance systems, like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, function smoothly, reducing the strain on the driver during extended drives. The flat-bottom steering wheel feels substantial, and the sports seats offer firm support, ensuring the driver always feels connected to the car. Meanwhile, the infotainment system and climate controls are easily accessible, enhancing comfort for all passengers.

The H6’s 2.0T engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The standard engine produces 185 kW and 380 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a 6.55L/100km fuel consumption. The car’s top speed is capped at 230 km/h.

Safety Features

The 2024 Hongqi H6 offers an optional Advanced Driving Assistance Package that enhances safety and convenience. Standard features include front head and side airbags for collision protection, tire pressure monitoring for optimal safety, and front and rear parking radars to assist with parking and obstacle avoidance. Keyless entry provides secure and convenient access to the vehicle, while heated external mirrors improve visibility in cold weather. The integrated sports seats offer comfortable seating with lateral support. Red Brembo brake calipers are optional to enhance braking performance.

Dealership Experience

I went to Hongqi’s official website to make a reservation. We received a call to confirm the booking in the afternoon. As I arrived at the Hongqi dealership at noon, I was greeted by the Hongqi rep who had contacted me earlier. Surprisingly, I was offered a complimentary lunch at their staff canteen before the test drive. After lunch, a test-drive specialist assisted with our test drive. The experience at the Hongqi dealership was very straightforward and enjoyable.

Conclusion

The Hongqi H6 is a medium-sized sedan that combines practicality with performance. The 2024 model updates its design and driving dynamics, appealing to those interested in Hongqi’s distinctive style. However, the dashboard materials and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) levels need enhancement. Compared to competitors like the BYD Han or the more affordable Lynk & Co EM-P 07, the H6 feels outdated and overpriced. Improvements in interior material quality and NVH levels are needed to compete with more contemporary and affordable alternatives to broaden the H6’s appeal.

Stay tuned for next week’s Sunday China Drive at Car News China, where you can read more first-person evaluations of Chinese cars.
