BYD Fang Cheng Bao Bao 5 (see specs), also known as the Yangwang U8 mini in China, has announced a significant price reduction to expand its appeal to mainstream buyers. The new pricing ranges from 239,800 to 302,800 yuan ($33,000 to USD 41,700), representing a 7,000 USD decrease from the previous starting price of 289,800 yuan (USD 39,900).

The Bao 5, the Leopard 5, was a groundbreaking entry into the luxury off-road SUV market. Initially launched with solid momentum, achieving monthly sales of 5,000 units in January, the Bao 5’s sales have dipped to approximately 2,000 units by April. Since its launch in August last year, over 25,000 units have been sold.

Exterior Design

The Bao 5 stands out with its robust and unique design. Its front grille features a bold horizontal pattern, prominently displaying the brand logo. This grille is flanked by upper and lower light strips that seamlessly connect the LED headlights on each side.

The side profile of the vehicle keeps traditional door handles and pedals, complemented by a sleek floating roof design. The Bao 5’s overall look is defined by its substantial SUV shape. It features a flat, wide windshield and a high-set bonnet line, accentuated by rugged, prominent plastic wheel arches that enhance its rugged character.

The Interior

The Bao 5 integrates cutting-edge technology with its interior design, featuring a sophisticated triple-screen setup. The cockpit includes two 12.3-inch instrument panels and a prominent 15.6-inch central control screen, creating an immersive digital environment. Physical buttons are strategically placed throughout the cabin for enhanced usability, blending tactile feedback with advanced tech.

Inside, the Bao 5 combines a sleek modern aesthetic with a rugged flair. The interior layout comfortably accommodates five passengers, arranged in a 2+3 configuration. The cabin’s design emphasizes an industrial charm inspired by the concept of ‘lock,’ which symbolizes both connection and distinctiveness. This industrial theme contributes a robust character to the cabin, setting it apart from conventional interiors.

Storage

The trunk offers a volume of 1069 liters.

Driving Experience

We had the chance to test the Bao 5 under various conditions, highlighting its diverse performance capabilities. This plug-in hybrid offers an all-electric range of 125 kilometers under optimal conditions, powered by two electric motors delivering 485 kW (approximately 660 horsepower). Coupled with a 1.5L turbo engine at the front, it produces a total output of 505 kW and 760 Nm of torque. Despite its hefty 2.8-ton weight, the Bao 5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds in sports mode.

Its robust build, with dimensions of 4890 mm in length, 1970 mm in width, and 1920 mm in height, supported by a 2800 mm wheelbase, enhances its off-road capabilities. The Bao 5 boasts approach and departure angles of 35 and 32 degrees, along with a ground clearance of up to 310 mm in the Disus-P version.

In sports mode, the Bao 5 delivers brisk acceleration and impressive power. However, it also performs exceptionally well in its default mode, providing a smooth and responsive driving experience. The intelligent energy management system maintains consistent power delivery even when the battery is low. In city driving, the vehicle often operates in electric mode with a remaining charge, enhancing efficiency.

Fuel consumption is noteworthy. The official CLTC range of 125 kilometers is accurate, with real-world electric range closer to 90% of the stated figure. In hybrid mode without charging, fuel consumption averages around 7 to 8 liters per 100 kilometers in city driving, dropping to 6 liters per 100 kilometers on highways. Even at 120 km/h, consumption remains around 10 liters per 100 kilometers.

The Bao 5’s softer suspension affects handling and stability at high speeds, leading to noticeable body roll and instability in sharp turns on uneven roads. Steering requires more attention, especially on poorly maintained highways. However, the suspension handles rough roads and large bumps well, maintaining a comfortable ride despite minor vibrations and road imperfections.

The Lane Centering Control (LCC) works effectively on straight roads but struggles with sharper curves, requiring driver intervention. While road noise is well-controlled, wind noise around the A-pillar becomes more noticeable at higher speeds.

In off-road conditions, the Bao 5’s chassis feels solid. Its suspension effectively absorbs large bumps, and the vehicle easily handles deep ruts and obstacles, thanks to its ground clearance and reinforced underbody. Despite being electric, it features front and rear locking differentials and a 4L gear setting. Engaging 4L aids in steep climbs, though the electric motor’s torque is often sufficient.

The vehicle excels in sandy terrain, generating power to ensure adequate torque for all wheels. The electric drive system compensates for the vehicle’s weight, making sand driving effortless. The Bao 5 handles steep inclines and challenging slopes efficiently, with precise electronic power distribution enhancing its off-road capabilities.

The Bao 5 is a robust off-roader that balances performance, efficiency, and comfort. It’s ideal for serious off-roading but also offers a unique driving experience for everyday use.

Range

The 31.8 kWh LFP Blade battery supports 100 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 30% to 80% charge in just 16 minutes. The SUV offers a combined range of 1,200 km under the CLTC standard and includes features such as 6 kW external discharge and V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) charging.

Safety Features

The Bao 5 prioritizes safety through several advanced features. It employs a non-load-bearing frame, which reduces front-impact intrusion by 30% and side-impact intrusion by 25%, enhancing crash protection. A robust 5-layer protection and a ring-type double safety system safeguard the vehicle’s blade battery. Its chassis is reinforced with 96% high-strength steel, bolstering structural integrity. Additionally, the Bao 5 integrates an L2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), offering cutting-edge safety technologies for a comprehensive driving experience.

Dealership Experience

We went to Fang Cheng Bao’s official website to make a reservation. Shortly after, we received a call to confirm the booking. Upon arriving at the dealership, we were greeted by the Fang Cheng Bao rep who had contacted us earlier. A test-drive specialist assisted with our test drive. The experience at the Fang Cheng Bao dealership was very straightforward and enjoyable.

Conclusion

BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao brand is also preparing to launch the Bao 8 SUV PHEV and the Bao 3 all-electric SUV in the fourth quarter of this year, with plans for 2 to 3 all-electric sports cars in 2025. The Bao 5 has already achieved a Guinness World Record for the highest altitude a plug-in hybrid vehicle reached, reaching 5,980 meters.

The Bao 5’s price reduction positions it to compete directly with other models in the off-road segment, such as the Tank 300, and 400. The SUV’s rugged, boxy design and high ground clearance are tailored for off-road performance, while its high-quality interior and advanced technology offer a sophisticated driving experience.

Overall, the Bao 5 represents BYD’s strategic effort to enhance its market presence and challenge traditional off-road brands with a competitive, well-equipped SUV at a more attractive price point.

Stay tuned for next week’s Sunday China Drive at Car News China, where you can read more first-person evaluations of Chinese cars.

On August 23, GAC announced that the Hyptec brand’s Quark Electric Drive 2.0 rolled off the assembly line. The new EV motor claims to have the world’s highest speed of up to 30,000 rpm.

It should be noted that the Hyptec brand was formally known as Aion Hyper and is the performance EV marque for GAC. It recently changed its English name in preparation for exports. The brand currently produces three high-end performance EVs: the SSR, HT, and GT.

The Quark Electric Drive 2.0 has a motor power density of 13 kW/kg and a motor efficiency of 98.5%. These attributes, together with the 30,000 rpm, are meant to be world-beating. It uses a special material amorphous soft magnet, which is known as “liquid metal” because it has a permeability of 20-100 times that of an ordinary silicon steel sheet, and the thickness is only a quarter of that of an A4 sheet of paper. This gives the motor an overall efficiency of close to room temperature superconductivity which plays a vital role in improving the motor’s parameters.

What that all means in practice is that the motor can add up to 50 km of range for an EV without having to increase the battery size, or in the case of an EREV, it can increase range by 150 km. It’s also the equivalent of giving an all-wheel-drive car the same range as an existing two-wheel-drive car. GAC claims that the technology has the potential to save 90 billion kWh of electricity per year.

The Quark Electric Drive 2.0 will soon be installed on Hyptec models. Earlier this month, the brand launched a new generation of smart digital chassis. It has a minimum turning radius of 3.4 meters, which is a 40% reduction in minimum turn radius. The chassis has the industry’s first fusion electronic differential lock, which means that two wheels can easily get out of trouble when suspended.

According to an announcement on August 23, the forthcoming 800V Neta S wagon will use the CATL skateboard chassis known as CIIC (CATL Integrated Intelligent Chassis). This, it’s claimed, is a world first for a production car, with the Neta S Wagon not only the first to use CATL’s skateboard chassis but also the first to use any skateboard chassis. The 800V version of the Neta S wagon using the CIIC system will be publicly unveiled at the end of August, possibly at the Chengdu Auto Show.

CATL’s CIIC system is an EV chassis with the battery and electric drivetrain, suspension, brakes, and other components Integrated in advance. It also includes cell-to-chassis (CTC) technology. Probably the biggest advantage of the skateboard system is that the upper and lower car bodies can be separated and decoupled, which means that they can be developed in parallel, thereby shortening development times.

Last year, CATL announced that its CIIC skateboard platform had completed testing in China and achieved a 1000 km range measured using the CLTC cycle with consumption of 10.5 kWh per 100 km. Furthermore, it managed to take on charge equivalent to a range of 300 km in 5 minutes. Battery pack efficiency is reportedly 75%. Sitting on top of the chassis was a B-class sedan believed to be from Neta.

Houzon Auto, the owners of the Neta brand, was the first partner to sign an agreement with CATL to use the skateboard chassis in January 2023. At the time, it was announced that the first car to use CIIC would be launched in Q3 2024.

It should be noted that CATL has signed partnerships for its CIIC skateboard with BAIC, and Vietnamese producer VinFast. There is also speculation that Huawei may have an agreement with CATL.

Editor’s note:

The announcement has created a degree of confusion regarding the Neta S wagon. It was understood that both the EV and EREV versions used Neta’s Shanhai 2.0 platform. Although it’s known that the CIIC system is only for an 800V architecture car, it is unclear how the CIIC skateboard and Shanhai 2.0 fit together, or if they even do. Previous announcements stated that the Shanhai 2.0 platform was an 800V system. The Neta S wagon has entered pre-sales, and hopefully, all will become clear by the time the car is launched. In May 2024 CATL and Neta entered into a ten-year comprehensive strategic partnership.

A few days ago, Denza launched presales of the Z9 GT, one of two flagship models to appear this year. The second will be the N9 flagship SUV. Up until now, the model had only been spotted heavily camouflaged, but now, in the run-up to its unveiling around the end of 2024, images are emerging of the car with far less camouflage, which allows us to make out the true shape of the car and we can also see that the test model now sports finalized lights. From these, we can see that the N9, from certain angles, seems to channel an inner Range Rover.

At the front, the hood slopes down quite quickly, and we can see that the N9 is broad. The headlight clusters have a split daytime running light design similar to those seen on the Z9 GT, along with slender headlights. The front looks largely enclosed, with air intakes at the bottom of the fender.

Side images show that the N9 should be large with there evidently being a long wheelbase. It’s expected that the SUV will feature some form of rear-wheel steering to help maneuver the car. In the shot taken from above, the car is nearly completely uncamouflaged, and we can see that it features concealed door handles and a panoramic roof. Certainly, from that angle, the rear seems to have a lot of Range Rover influence about it, with the thick spoiler at the end of the roof line and a tailgate that drops down abruptly. Given the size of the N9 it will almost certainly be a three-row SUV.

A cheeky shot through the window gives us another glimpse of the interior. This once again seems to confirm that inside the Denza N9 should be very similar to the overall layout of the Denza Z9 GT. This means a three-screen layout in the front and a center console decorated with wood grain trim along with leather for the steering wheel. Like the Z9 GT the car almost certainly features two refrigerators.

Although there is currently no information about the powertrain of the N9, given that the car is a flagship product, as with the Z9 GT, we can expect the powertrains to be similar and so the N9 will likely feature a three-motor setup. For reference, the Z9 GT in its all-electric version has a 230 kW front motor while it has two electric motors at the rear, each with a peak power of 240 kW, giving a combined total of 710 kW. The PHEV version of the Denza Z9 GT gets a BYD479ZQA 2.0T engine and three electric motors. Maximum power of the engine is 152 kW, and the front motor is 200 kW while both rear motors are 220 kW each. Current expectations are that the N9 will come in both EV and PHEV forms.

Denza started life as a 50:50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes Benz. However, since 2021, Mercedes Benz has taken a back seat, and BYD now controls 90% of the venture. Currently, three models are on sale the D9 MPV and the N7 and N8 SUVs. Deliveries of the Z9 GT will begin in September, and later, the GT version will be joined by a sedan version known simply as the Z9. We can expect to see the N9 unveil before the end of the year and deliveries to commence during the first quarter of 2025 at the latest.

On August 22, Baidu revealed that its self-driving ride-hailing platform – Apollo Go – operated about 899,000 rides in the second quarter of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 26%, according to the company’s earning call. As of July 28, Apollo Go has operated more than 7 million rides.

Compared to Google’s robotaxi service offered by Waymo, the company disclosed on Tuesday that it is now operating more than 100,000 paid rides every week in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix combined.

According to Pacific Securities’ forecast, a Chinese investment bank and brokerage firm, the market size of robotaxi in China is expected to exceed 1.18 trillion yuan (165.2 billion USD) and 2.93 trillion yuan (410.2 billion USD) in 2025 and 2030, respectively.

Baidu’s 6th-generation robotaxi (RT6) road testing in Wuhan, China
Baidu’s history with driverless vehicles goes back to 2013 when the company established an intelligent driving business group. That year, Baidu released the “Apollo Project” at the Shanghai Auto Show. Then in 2017, Baidu launched the Apollo Open Platform, an open-source self-driving vehicle tech platform. At the time, Wang Jin, then head of Baidu’s autonomous car business, said to the industry “Three years to realize commercial application, five years to achieve mass production, and ten years to change the way we travel.”

Baidu robotaxi interior
Later in 2019, Baidu shifted its business focus to robotaxi in which Apollo Go started manned test operation services in China. In May this year, Baidu officially announced at Apollo Day that Apollo Go is expected to break even in the city of Wuhan by the end of 2024 and be profitable by 2025. Previously, Wang Yunpeng, vice president of Baidu, shared that the total cost of the 5th-generation Apollo Go robotaxi was 480,000 yuan (67,200 USD) and that the vehicle can be operated reliably for five years.

To further reduce costs, Baidu announced in May this year that the cost of its 6th-generation robotaxi (known as RT6) has been decreased to 204,600 yuan (28,350 USD), and plans to deploy 1,000 units in the fourth quarter to achieve 24/7 operation in Wuhan. The in-vehicle safety operator will also be removed and switched to remote monitoring.

Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the RT6’s primary lidar is supplied by Hesai, which includes four ultra-high-definition long-range AT128 lidars, offering a detection range of up to 200 meters.

Days ago, we reported that SAIC was suffering a sales crisis and that, going forward, the company would be increasingly reliant on the Wuling joint venture. This is a three-way JV, with SAIC having 50.1%, General Motors 44%, and Guangxi Automobile Group (previously Liuzhou Wuling Motors) 5.9%. News emerged on August 22 that will likely help the sales woes of both SAIC and GM, thanks to a 30% increase in sales during the early part of August for the Wuling JV.

According to a CCTV news report, the driver has been the recent doubling of the government cash for clunkers trade-in scheme. The scheme was initially announced in April and runs until the end of the year. Initially, buyers could receive up to a 10,000 yuan (1,400 USD) rebate when trading in a national standard three emissions car or an NEV registered before April 30, 2018, and buying a new NEV. The car traded in would then be scrapped. At the end of July, it was announced that the amount would be doubled up to 20,000 yuan (2,800 USD) and that people who had already participated in the scheme would receive the higher amount./

Accordingly, it’s reported that SAIC GM Wuling saw a sales increase of 30% month-on-month and 25% year-on-year in early August, giving the company a market share of 5.7%. The performance of individual cars was even better, with the Bingo family receiving an 87% month-on-month increase and a 73% year-on-year increase. The Baojun Cloud increased by 57% month-on-month and 97% year-on-year.

Sales have been particularly good in Shandong and Henan provinces, where dealers are experiencing inventory supply problems. Such interest has been spurred not just by the government subsidies but also by various promotional activities organized by dealers, which have included door-to-door test drives to aid convenience for potential customers and onsite secondhand car evaluation for trade-ins.

Cumulative sales of the JV exceeded 29 million in June 2024, with the Hongguang Mini EV alone contributing 1.3 million units in the four years since the car launched. The Wuling Bingo (see specs) series has also been a success, with sales of 280,000 in the 15 months since the model’s launch.

Editor’s note:

Although the sales performance of the Wuling JV is welcome for both SAIC and General Motors, the news is bittersweet. Sales by the SAIC-GM joint venture have plummeted this year by 55%. This means that in China, General Motors is almost entirely reliant on the Wuling JV for profits. SAIC itself is in a slightly better position thanks to its many business units; however, the only one that currently comes close to the sales figures of the Wuling JV is the Volkswagen JV, and the future performance of that unit is far from guaranteed, as evidenced by the collapse of the GM JV’s sales. It should be noted that almost the whole Wuling range costs less than 150,000 yuan (21,000 USD), with many models priced considerably lower. Reliance on sales from such a unit does not bode well for the long-term profitability of either SAIC or GM in China.

Earlier this year, we reported that the Zeekr 007 station wagon was in pre-production. Zeekr CEO An Conghui has confirmed the existence of such a car and said that it will be released in 2025. Codenamed CC1E, little is known about the Nio ET5T competitor. At the same time, An mentioned that Zeekr’s new flagship large SUV will be released in the third quarter of 2025. The car is currently known by the EX1E code name.

Traditionally, station wagons have not been popular in the Chinese market. However, in recent years, especially with the adoption of EVs, they have begun creeping in, partly to make Chinese cars more appealing when exported to Europe.

We can get some idea of what to expect from the forthcoming wagon version of the 007 by looking at the sedan version and also how competitors have transitioned the design of a sedan over to a wagon. In the case of Nio, we can see that the ET5T (see specs) has exactly the same dimensions as the sedan ET5 (see specs) with 4790 1960, 1499 mm (l/w/h), and a wheelbase of 2888 mm. It is a similar case with the Neta S wagon, which, despite being built on a different platform to the sedan version (see specs), shares near identical dimensions of 4980, 1980, and 1480 mm (l/w/h) and a wheelbase of 2980 mm – the only difference being a thirty millimeter increase in height over the sedan. Therefore, we should expect the dimensions of the Zeekr 007 Wagon to match those of the sedan (see specs) quite closely so, being 4880, 1900, and 1448 mm (l/w/h) and a wheelbase of 2928 mm. This sees the car sitting almost exactly midway in size between the Nio ET5T and the Neta S wagon.

Various fan renderings have been posted on the Internet claiming that the car will adopt a wagon style similar to that of the Nio ET5T. This may well be the case with the forthcoming Exeed Exlantix ES Wagon, but at the moment, this is pure speculation for the 007, with so far no published spy shots to confirm the shape.

It is possible that the wagon version will be part of a 2026 model year Zeekr 007 launch. However, at the moment, our best idea of what to expect with regard to performance and configuration comes from the recently launched 2025 model-year sedan. This means a choice between a 75 kWh Golden Brick battery, or a 100 kWh Qilin battery from CATL The former is a self-developed battery, which in its second generation form supports 5.5C charging. This Zeekr claims means that the 007 is the world’s fastest charging production EV with a 10 to 80% SOC in 10.5 minutes.

The 007 sedan is available in single- and dual-motor versions. All versions use a 310 kW electric motor on the rear axle, and dual-motor versions add a 165 kW electric motor to the front. Depending on the configuration and battery pack fitted, ranges vary between 616 and 870 km.

As part of the 2025 model year upgrade, the Zeekr 007 received the Haohan intelligent driving 2.0 system, which boosts the car’s self-driving ability. The car has over 30 sensors, including Lidar, and the system works on a Lidar plus visual fusion basis. By the time the wagon launches in 2025, the system will have a door-to-door capability. Two Nvidia Orin X Chips provide 508 TOPS computing power, enabling the smart driving system.

Inside the cockpit, the Zeekr 007 features a 15-inch OLED center screen, a 35.5-inch AR-HUD system, and an LCD instrument panel. Other features include a 21-speaker premium audio system, an AI fragrance system, and a panoramic roof.

The Zeekr 007 was the brand’s breakout car in terms of sales. Although little is known about the wagon version currently, it is sure to further increase the model’s appeal, especially when exported.

The Zeekr 7X will debut at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 30, and the SUV is expected to be released at the end of September. In the lead up to its unveiling, Zeekr has released some teaser images of the interior, which show five key details. These consist of central control buttons, a yacht-style mid-platform design, floating ripple ambient lighting, the speaker design, and perforated seats.

From the teaser shots, we can see that the new car will have a large size floating central infotainment screen, which at the bottom has piano-like mechanical buttons. These are likely to control media and AC, helping improve convenience for the driver. Also visible are the dual wireless mobile phone charging pads. Chinese media describe the area behind the charging pads as being yacht-like. We can also notice from the pictures that there appear to be some more controls where the drive selector would usually be placed. However, based on previous spy shots, this may simply be the handle for opening what appears to be a refrigerator. Judging from what looks like a side-placed button on the cubbyhole, we can guess that this will be openable from either side. One of the images shows a speaker with Zeekr Sound emblazoned on it, and this is most likely one on top of the dashboard. Chinese media are claiming that this has a sunflower pattern. Not only are the seats perforated but the perforations appear to form a pattern.

The Zeekr 7X adopts the hidden energy design language, and the styling reflects other members of the Zeekr range. Notable features include the Zeekr Stargate all-in-one Smart Light Curtain at the front and a clamshell-type closing of the rear hatch, which largely erases the seam between the tailgate and the fender. The rear also features a through taillight and a cascade design with the roof-mounted spoiler and then a lip on the tailgate after the window line. From the wheel arch, a crease smoothly flows into the lip line.

With dimensions (see specs of Zeekr 7X) of 4825, 1930, and 1666 mm (l/w/h) and a wheelbase of 2925 mm, the all-electric SUV is well into mid-size territory. Single and dual motor versions will be available, with all cars using a 310 kW electric motor on the rear axle. All-wheel drive versions add a 165 kW electric motor to the front, and this version has a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of three seconds.

Buyers of the single-motor version can choose between 75 and 100 kWh battery packs. The 75 kWh battery pack is the Zeekr-developed golden brick battery from Geely‘s subsidiary, VREMT. Presumably, this will be the second generation version of the lithium iron phosphate battery that recently debuted in the 2025 model year Zeekr 007, where Geely claims to have produced the world’s fastest charging production EV. The 100 kWh pack on the other hand uses a Qilin ternary lithium battery sourced from CATL and in the single motor version this gives a WLTC range of 705 km, the dual-motor version is only available with the 100 kWh battery pack.

Already, the Zeekr 7X has been spotted testing overseas. Given that the Zeekr brand is rapidly expanding into international markets, it is highly likely that the 7X will be exported. However, given the similarity of the name to BMW’s X7, it may well need to be renamed for export. Prices at launch for the Chinese market are expected to be in the 240,000 to 350,000 yuan (33,000 – 48,200 USD) range.

The European Commission has announced the final ruling on its anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EVs. This is the culmination of a process that started in October 2023 and resulted in the imposition of temporary tariffs on July 4.

Accordingly, the new rates are BYD 17% (down 0.4%), Geely 19.3% (down 0.6%), and SAIC 36.3% (down 1.3%). For cooperating companies, of which there are 17 that didn’t receive separate rates, there is a 0.5% increase to 21.3%. Tesla has now managed to get a new rate of 9% for its cars imported from China, previously it was being treated as a cooperating company at 20.8%. Non-cooperating companies will be subject to 36.3% tariffs.

The change in rate for Tesla is good news for the company, which requested an individual examination based on the actual subsidies it receives. Tesla is currently the largest exporter of EVs from China to the EU, with all Model 3 cars sold in the market sourced from the Shanghai factory. The European Commission visited the Shanghai factory in late June as part of the investigation after it was originally included in the cooperating group figure when the preliminary tariffs were announced.

Chinese car producers now have ten days to provide comments to the European Commission. The final plan will then be put to the 27 member states in October for voting. Unless a majority vote against the measures, they will be implemented by November 2024. The measures will last for five years and can be extended.

Certain question marks remain regarding several producers. The biggest of these is Spotlight Automotive Limited, a joint venture between BMW and Great Wall. This was set up to produce the fourth-generation electric Mini and was to act from 2024 as the main production plant for electric versions of the car until at least 2026. However, the JV did not cooperate with the investigation. Volkswagen Group is in a similar situation with its Cupra Tavascan SUV, produced at its Anhui plant.

On August 21, Avatr unveiled its new Kunlun range-extending technology. Avatr will first use the new range extender system in the forthcoming Avatr 07 SUV, and later, the system will find its way into the Avatr 11 and 12 models.

Key claims for the new system are the lack of power attenuation after the battery reaches a low state of charge and that the battery supports fast charging. Ultimately, Avatr claims that the EREV system feels more like an all-electric car, something that is not the case with other EREV systems.

The actual capacity of the engine being used as a range extender was not announced at the launch of the Kunlun technology. However, it should be the JL469ZQ1 1.5T engine, which was previously announced in the MIIT listing of the Avatr 07. Sourced from Changan it has a peak power of 115 kW. What is known is that the unit used in the Kunlun system has a thermal efficiency of 44.39% and a compression ratio of 15:1. The conversion rate of oil to electricity is 3.63 kWh/l. Avatr has done considerable work on reducing NVH caused by the engine and claims that the operating noise is less than 75 dB. Using active control technology, the car can place the engine pistons in the best position with the lowest starting cylinder pressure every time the engine is turned off. Engine starting cylinder pressure is reduced by 62.5%, and the vibration at startup is reduced by 90%.

The engine can operate at ambient temperatures between 35°C and 65 °C. Furthermore, the power output can be controlled according to road conditions, with factors such as a slope or traffic jams influencing the operation of the engine. In the case of a traffic jam, the car will generate electricity in advance and just use electric power when meeting the traffic congestion.

Power to the rear wheels will come from a 231 kW 7-in-1 electric drive system. Avatr has created a system to try to maximize power from the motor by more accurately measuring temperature. At about 180°C, the permanent magnet on a motor rotor will become permanently demagnetized. Therefore the industry usually limits the power output of the motor once the rotor reaches around 140°C, the problem is it is very difficult to measure the temperature accurately. Usually, this is attempted by measuring the temperature of the cooling oil, but the error rate can be as high as 30°C, meaning that the power of the motor begins reducing at just 110°C.

In the Kunlun system Avatr tries to control the temperature increase while also measuring the temperature more accurately. The system uses more than 30 winding spray holes to shower the system, and the rotor is cooled by magnetic steel helping improve continuous power. Furthermore, the reducer has 12 spray ports with precise and active spray cooling.

To measure the temperature more accurately, sensors are installed in 50 key positions of the motor, and using large model AI, the system can more accurately measure the temperature. What this means is that while an ordinary motor might begin to start limiting power output when the temperature is 110°C, in the case of the Kunlun range extender, this will not start until 132°C. Under testing, the Kunlun system has achieved 25 consecutive acceleration runs up to 100 km/h without the power declining, which Avatr claims Is the strongest in the industry.

A typical problem with EREVs is their performance declines when the car is under feed conditions. Avatr says that 07 equipped with the Kunlun system can accelerate from 0- 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds when fully charged and 5.8 seconds under the feed state. This means a difference of 0.9 seconds and an acceleration attenuation of 15.5 %. According to Avatr the competition has a rate of 44 to 45% with for example the Li L6 accelerating in 5.28 seconds under fully charged conditions but 9.55 seconds when using the range extender to feed the battery.

Chart showing the acceleration times at full charge, during the feed state, difference, and percentage power attenuation for the Avatr 07, Aito M7, Li L6 and Exeed Exlantix ET
This situation is caused by the battery discharge power decreasing during feeding and not being enough to support the power required for the operation of the motor. To solve this problem Avatr and CATL jointly developed a 39 kWh Shenxing super hybrid battery dedicated to range extension. Peak discharge power is up to 9C at full charge and 7.7C when feeding. It should be noted that although Changan is the largest shareholder (40.99%) of Avatr Technology, CATL is the second largest with a 14.1% share.

Performance of the 39 kWh Shenxing battery in the Avatr 07
Avatr identified another pain point with EREVs and claims that although they are fast to refuel, they are slow to recharge, often taking longer to recharge than an all-electric car with a larger capacity battery. The 39 kWh Shenxing battery being used at launch is a 3C battery, which allows the car to charge from 30 to 80% SOC in 15 minutes. The battery gives the Avatr 07 a 245 km all-electric range and a comprehensive range of 1152 km using the CLTC measurement system.

However, next year, Avatr will launch a 07 equipped with a 52.4 kWh Shenxing 4C super hybrid battery developed by CATL. This battery has a maximum charging rate of 4C and allows a 30 to 80% charge in 10 minutes. It gives the car an electric range of 325 km and a comprehensive range of 1220 km.

Performance of the 52.4 kWh Shenxing 4C battery due in the Avatr 07 in 2025.
The Kunlan system will initially debut in the Avatr 07 and by the end of the year will also appear in the Avatr 11 and 12 models. With many customers opting for range extenders due to range anxiety with all-electric cars the Avatr brand should receive a sales boost.

SAIC has released a number of teaser images of the all-new hybrid MG ZS, which will debut in Europe and Australia on August 28. The new car is expected to launch overseas in October.

Unlike the first-generation ZS compact SUV, the second-generation car will only be available as a hybrid. The current car comes as an ICE or an EV. The EV version of the ZS will likely be replaced with the MG S5 car, which has already been spotted testing in Europe.

From the teaser images, we can see that the car in front resembles the second-generation MG 3 supermini, which was launched earlier this year. Utilizing MG’s latest family style design language, the ZS comes with a large air intake grille and an aggressive-looking double mouth surround. The shape of the headlight clusters looks largely the same as those on the MG 3. From the side, the second-generation ZS looks quite similar to the first generation. It is unlikely, though, that the new car is simply an extensive facelift of the old car given the age of that model, production of it began in 2017. At the rear, the taillights are similar to those seen on the MG 3, and LED units giving the car a distinctive look when lit up at night. The exhaust pipes are integrated into the rear fender with two trapezoidal housings. The car has muscular rear haunches and a spoiler that finishes off the roof line, making it look sporty.

Although the powertrain has yet to be announced, given the relationship between the second-generation ZS and the MG 3 we can expect the new car to share the supermini’s set up. This means the hybrid system will be based around a 1.5 liter petrol engine, which has a maximum power of 75 kW and can produce up to 128 Nm of torque. The electric motor provides up to 100 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, providing a maximum combination of 143 kW and 425 Nm. Also likely to be carried over is the 1.83 kWh capacity battery.

This is the latest model to show a growing divergence between the cars MG sells in China and those sold overseas. Initially, it was just a case of MG models overseas being rebadged versions of cars from different SAIC brands in China. One of the best examples is the MG5 in Europe, is a rebaged version of the Roewe Ei5 is in China. However, more recently, this has changed, and the MG cars available in Europe are not available in China. This was first seen with the second generation MG 3 supermini, which as yet has not launched in China, and equally with the second generation MG HS, which also is not sold in China. It seems that the second-generation MG ZS will also join this list.

SAIC will be hoping that the new hybrid MG ZS will help stem rapidly declining sales for the company’s own brand offerings.

On August 20, Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng gave details of the company’s next-generation sedan, the Xpeng P7+, in an earnings call. The new model marks a distinct change in the company’s flagship XNGP assisted driving package.

He announced that the P7+ would launch in the fourth quarter. As previously communicated, the company expects sales to increase in the second half of 2024 largely due to the new Mona M03 model in Q3 and the forthcoming P7+ in Q4. In the second quarter, Xpeng delivered 30,207 EVs, earning a revenue of 8.11 billion yuan (1.14 billion USD), a year-on-year increase of 60.2%. Furthermore, gross profit margin increased by 17.9% year-on-year to 14%. Sales guidance for the third quarter is 41,000 to 45,000 units.

Sales are expected to be further boosted in the fourth quarter when the P7+ launches. The Xpeng P7+ is a large sedan with dimensions of 5056, 1937, and 1512 mm (l/w/h) along with a 3000 mm wheelbase. At the front, the car has an X-type face with split headlights and a largely enclosed front. An active grille improves aerodynamics, but so far we do not have a drag coefficient or range information for the new model.

Most importantly, the P7+ will be the first model to feature Xpeng’s next-generation autonomous driving hardware platform. This means that the car will no longer require Lidar and will switch to a purely vision-based system similar to Tesla’s FSD for its smart driving XNGP system. Xpeng claims that the company has cost advantages that make it difficult for competitors to replicate due to innovation and cost.

He said that Xpeng aimed to extend the XNGP system to models priced from 150,000 yuan, making Xpeng the first company to achieve high-end intelligent assisted driving on 20,000 USD models. The company has a goal to deliver the same experience as seen overseas on robotaxis with its XNGP-equipped cars within 18 months. This effectively means L3+ software capabilities and user experience but using cars equipped with L2 hardware and the inherent cost savings.

He Xiaopeng also said that there will be more announcements about technological breakthroughs in the fields of large AI models, robots, and robotaxis and that they would be announced at the Mona M03 press conference on August 27 and at the annual technology day on October 24.

Xpeng has entered a period where international sales are undergoing rapid development and are becoming an important driver for both sales and profit growth. The company claimed that in the second quarter of this year, it ranked first in total exports for mid to high-end Chinese pure electric brands. For the first time, the contribution from overseas sales exceeded 10%. The Xpeng G9 was the top-selling mid to large pure electric SUV in Norway, Denmark, and Israel and ranks in the top three In Sweden and the Netherlands. As of July, Xpeng had entered 30 countries and regions, including Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. During the second half of the year, the company will expand into more right-hand drive markets, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and various Southeast Asian nations. The number of international sales stores are expected to double by the end of the year from the current 70.
