Chinese media report that the Xiaomi SUV will be unveiled at the end of October. It’s reported that Xiaomi will hold a blockbuster press conference at the end of October to unveil a string of new electronics products. These will include the Xiaomi 15 series, Xiaomi 7 series tablet, and a new Xiaomi bracelet, along with the latest operating system version. At the end of the conference it’s expected there will be a “one more thing” and that slot is believed to belong to the Xiaomi SUV.

Although we may well get our first glance of the Xiaomi SUV, which is believed to be code named MX11, without camouflage at the event, the launch and delivery of the car will not be until 2025.

There is currently little concrete information about the MX11, and all that we know is that it is believed to be an all-electric car, and from the spy shot so far seen, we know that it is a low-lying SUV with a sporty style. The Xiaomi MX11 has proportions similar to the Ferrari Purosangue and may, like the Xiaomi SU7, have a heavily inspired design. Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, has said that he aimed to produce a dream car for the masses with the SU7, and so far, it looks as if he may be trying to repeat the same trick with the new SUV.

Oscar Wilde said, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” And it would seem that some Chinese low-speed EV (LSEV) manufacturers have got in on Xiaomi’s own act. It is already possible to purchase a Xiaomi SUV-inspired LSEV. Although these vehicles are allowed on city roads, there are limitations as to the speed they can do, and their usage is largely restricted to old people. For some reason, Shandong seems to be where the vast majority of such vehicles are produced.

Xiaomi SUV inspired LSEV
None of the LSEVs will have anywhere near the capability that is expected from the real deal. The test cars so far spied have Lidar fitted and is also likely to use 800V architecture. If the MX11 really is unveiled at the event in October, we may learn some more details about the car as well

It’s reported that Xiaomi’s third car will be an extended-range SUV, priced around 150,000 yuan (20,950 USD). The model will be launched in 2026 and aimed largely at families.

The fourth model from the Aito brand has recently been spied testing. Known as the M8, the new SUV will fill the model gap between the current M7 and M9 cars. Previous information has suggested that the M8 is largely a five-seat version of the M9.

From the spy shots, we can certainly see that the M8’s styling and silhouette are similar to those of the current M9. The car appears to have largely straight lines; however, the window line appears to kick up after the C-pillar. This may, though, simply be a case of camouflaging to confuse us.

Unlike on the M9 there is no roof-mounted Lidar unit. This could mean one of several things. Firstly, the car pictured could just be a lower spec version, which does not come with Lidar, but this seems somewhat unlikely given that the M9 has Lidar as standard across the range. Another possibility is that the car uses a purely vision-based system for its smart driving capability. Huawei’s latest ADS system is known as Qiankun 3.0, and the SE version of this is a purely vision-based system. It is, however, aimed at cheaper cars such as the Deepal S07 and so would not be used on a car such as the M8. The system can only support driving assistance on highways and urban expressways along with ramp access and exits. This may mean that Huawei is shifting to a high-end vision-based system. It should be noted that Xpeng, with its XNGP system, will in future no longer need to use Lidar, and the forthcoming Xpeng P7+, which is equipped with the system, does not have Lidar.

Interior spy shots of the M8 show that it will have a very similar interior to that of the M9 and uses a triple screen design.

The M8 will likely come in all-electric, and EREV versions and the powertrain should be broadly in line with that of the M9. In the case of the EREV version of the M9 (see specs), it uses a 1.5T engine with a maximum power of 112 kW as a range extender. Actual power to the wheels comes from a front-mounted 165 kW electric motor and a 200 kW unit on the rear. Combined peak torque of the system is 675 Nm. For the BEV there’s a 160 kW electric motor on the front and a more powerful 230 kW motor at the rear. Surprisingly, torque is slightly lower on the BEV version, with a total of 673 Nm. The EREV has a 42 kWh battery pack and has an all-electric range of 190 km, while the BEV uses a 100 kWh battery pack and has a 630 km range, both measured using the CLTC system.

Aito is a brand developed between Huawei and Seres using the HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) ecosystem cooperation model. Under this, Huawei not only provides an intelligent cockpit and intelligent driving solution but is also involved with elements including the design, production, sales, after-sales, and other vehicle stages but stops short of producing the car.

Earlier this year, Seres began using a 10,000-ton class super diecasting unit to produce the rear body units of the Aito M9. This reduced the number of parts by nearly 80 and the number of solder joints by around 1440. It’s reported that this manufacturing technique will also be used with the M8.

Aito has a sales target of 600,000 cars for 2024. It’s believed that the M8 model will launch in the coming months, and the plans call for this to form part of the total sales.

Over the last year, BYD has rapidly expanded its market reach across the globe. The latest market poised for BYD’s entry is the fifth most populous country in the world, Pakistan.

BYD on August 17 will hold a brand conference in Pakistan and show three models that will be sold in the market. These three models are believed to include an SUV and a sedan. Most likely candidates for the three cars are the usual trio that BYD enters markets with namely the Atto 3 SUV, Dolphin small hatchback, and Seal sedan. According to people familiar with the plans BYD aims to sell both all-electric and PHEV models in the market in the future.

For its foray into the Pakistani market BYD has partnered with Mega Conglomerate Pvt, one of Pakistan’s largest business groups. According to Bloomberg, this deal goes beyond the dealership model in most markets.

BYD Atto 3 in Thailand
Sales in Pakistan are due to begin in the fourth quarter and before that the venture will set up showrooms in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

It has been reported that BYD also plans to set up a factory in Pakistan with production set to begin In 2026. Although BYD has confirmed plans to enter the Pakistani market they have declined to comment about the factory. It’s believed that BYD will form a partnership with Mega Motors a subsidiary of Hub Power Co., the country’s largest independent power producer.

The plant will be built near Port Qasim in Karachi which is already home to assembly plants of Japanese and Korean car companies including Toyota, Suzuki, and Kia. Port Qasim Is the country’s second largest port handling around 35% of the nation’s cargo.

Port Qasim, Pakistan
Sales of locally assembled vehicles in Pakistan last year were 85,087 a decrease of 63.4% year-on-year and it is believed that passenger cars only made up around half this total. Encouragingly in May data from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) shows that passenger car sales were 8,487 units, up from 3,934 units in May 2023.

The Pakistani government has a target of 30% of new car sales to be made up of new energy vehicles by 2030. Chinese producers including Great Wall Motor, SAIC, and Changan have already entered the local market.

BYD has already entered more than 80 markets globally. Back in July BYD opened its first wholly-owned overseas factory in Thailand with the production of the company’s 8 millionth new energy vehicle. BYD also has a JV plant in Uzbekistan and a factory under construction in Indonesia. Furthermore, BYD has signed agreements with Hungary, Turkey, and Brazil for the production of EVs.

The Polestones 01 EREV off-roader from Rox Motor, BAW, and Pininfarina launched in China with a smaller battery capacity. This variant became 50,000 yuan (7,000 USD) cheaper than the initially launched model. It starts at 299,900 yuan (41,800 USD).

Polestones is a high-end NEV brand under Rox Motor, a company founded by the CEO of Roborock. Rox Motor launched the Polestones 01 in August 2023. This crossover was designed by a well-known Pininfarina firm. Beijing Automobile Works (BAW) is a contract manufacturer of this model in China.

Why the cheaper version launch is vital for the Polestones 01

Initially, the Polestones 01 was launched with a 56 kWh ternary NMC pack from CATL and a price range of 349,900 – 359,900 yuan (48,800 – 50,200 USD). Rox Motor positioned it as a direct competitor of the Li Auto L9 crossover. However, the Polestones 01’s sales performance is distant from the Li L9’s numbers. The cumulative retail sales of the Polestones 01 from October 2023 to July 2024 reached only 2,931 units.

The Polestones 01 has faced several issues in China. Aside from the lack of brand power and a small sales network, the main problem here is the high price of this off-roader. It is seemingly cheaper than the Li L9. On the other hand, it is still more expensive than other L-series cars like L7 and L8. So, Rox Motor eagerly needed to slice the price of their off-roader to make it more attractive for buyers. And they’ve finally launched the cheaper variant of this vehicle.

Polestones 01 Standard Range launched in China

The Polestones 01 Standard Range has entered the Chinese market with two trim levels. The entry-level car offers six seats with a 2+2+2 layout. The dimensions of this variant are 5050/1980/1869 mm. There is also a 7-seat variant (a 2+2+3 layout) available with a length of 5295 mm.

The Polestones 01 is an EREV SUV. This means that it has a 1.5-liter ICE under the hood that acts like a generator. It doesn’t transfer torque to the wheels, sending power to the battery and e-motors. Speaking of electric motors, their peak power reaches 350 kW (469 hp). The Polestones 01 speeds up to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.

Previously, Rox Motor launched the Polestones 01 with a CATL’s ternary NMC battery for 56 kWh and 306 km of CLTC range. The cheaper standard range version has a smaller pack for 44.5 kWh also made by CATL. The electric range of this variant reaches 180 km (CLTC).

As mentioned, the Polestones 01 Standard Range has become 50,000 yuan (7,000 USD) cheaper. Its price range is 299,900 – 309,900 yuan (41,800 – 43,200 USD), depending on the interior layout. So, it has become a bit cheaper than the entry-level Li L7 crossover. This price reduction is an important step for Rox Motor to improve the sales performance of the Polestones 01. However, the company still needs to deal with other issues like low brand power and a small sales network.

Polestone has also teamed up with South-South International Trading Comany to promote its vehicles at the overseas markets like the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

The first mass-produced Onvo L60 has officially rolled off the production line. Alongside this announcement, the company also released a slew of official interior images of the new model. Deliveries are expected to begin in late September.

The Onvo L60 is positioned as a mid-sized all-electric SUV, supporting both fast and slow charging as well as battery swapping, directly competing with the Tesla Model Y. The starting price is set at 219,900 RMB, with deliveries expected to begin in late September.

Onvo L60 interior

The interior design of the Onvo L60 is like that of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, featuring a dashboard-less design without any physical buttons. The central console is equipped with a 17.3-inch 3K display. There also appears to be a small display on top of the steering wheel, presumably used as a speedometer.

Nio has confirmed features such as a 13-inch HUD in front of the driver, Nio’s SkyOS operating system, and connectivity with devices such as a Nintendo Switch. The Onvo L60 also offers Nio developed comfort seats, with the front seat-backs capable of fully reclining. Additionally the rear seats are equipped with an 8-inch entertainment control screen.

Onvo dubs the interior cabin as the “Urban Oasis”. The interior is equipped with 16 million color ambient lighting, 1000W sounds system developed by Onvo called “Onvo Sound”, and 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos surround sound.

16 million color ambient lighting

Onvo L60 design

The exterior has been revealed for some time and follows a common design language of electric SUVs with a coupe-like body shape and hidden door handles. The car features a hatchback-style tailgate and slight “duck-tail” spoiler. The Onvo L60 measures 4828/1930/1616 mm, with a wheelbase of 2950 mm.

The car is built on a 900V platform architecture and is currently only registered with a 60.6 kWh battery pack, according to the MIIT. The single-motor version is equipped with a 240 kW motor offering a CLTC range of 555 to 525km. The 4WD variant has a 100 kW e-motor in the front axle, and a 240 kW one in the rear, offering CLTC range of 525 to 501 km.

The Onvo L60 will have Nio’s vision-based assisted solution, NOA pilot assistance, equipped. The vehicle has 30 assisted driving hardware components, including 4d imaging radar, seven 8-megapixel cameras, four surround-view cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars. The 4D radar and 8-megapixel cameras have forward detection ranges of up to 370 meters and 687 meters respectively.

Onvo plans to open 200 stores across China by the end of the year. The vehicle is expected to fully integrate with Nio’s service network including 3.0 and 4.0 battery swapping stations. The Onvo L60’s price range and features compete directly with the Tesla Model Y and XPeng G6. The Tesla Model Y remains dominate in sales selling 36,299 in July. With deliveries of the Onvo L60 imminent, we will see how consumers respond to this new offering.

Voyah unveiled the 2025 model-year Dreamer MPV on August 15. It is a facelift version of the car that originally went on sale in 2022 and can largely be seen as a makeover by Huawei. However, the changes are not purely cosmetic and involve the configuration and capability. The upgraded Dreamer will start pre-sales on August 28.

Externally, the 2025 Dreamer is marked out by a new grille. Although the overall shape of the grille is largely the same as the old one, it now features 34 vertical Chrome strips, and there is also a shadowing effect at both the top and bottom of the grille. The 34 strips represent the 34 provinces and autonomous regions of China. Chrome also covers the front lip and edges of the air intake on both sides, and the air intakes themselves are now far more prominent. High-spec versions of the car have a lidar unit mounted at the top of the windshield. Chinese media claim that the waistline now extends from the headlight to the tail and that the overall sidelines are straighter. From the press conference we can also see a number of new wheel designs including one with numerous close spokes.

Dimensions of the 2025 year model are slightly different at 5315, 1980, and 1820 mm (l/w/h) but the wheelbase remains unchanged at 3200 mm. For reference the existing car (see specs) measures 5315, 1985, and 1800 mm.

The 2025 Dreamer uses Voyah’s Lanhai power system and there are both PHEV and fully electric versions of the MPV. In the case of the PHEV, it features an engine with a thermal efficiency of 45.18%.

Little was revealed about the interior at the unveiling. However, it was mentioned that maximum legroom in the third row had been increased by 10%. This is part of what is claimed to be a comprehensive upgrading of the interior and includes comfort improvements such as an increase in the backrest height for third-row passengers and an improvement in shoulder support for them.

We also know that the cockpit will gain the Huawei treatment with the HarmonyOS system intelligent cockpit. There should also be a refrigerator with also a heating function.

Where the biggest change lies is with the adoption of Huawei’s smart driving solution in its newest Qiankun ADS 3.0 form. The AEB functions have been upgraded as part of the system. Forward collision avoidance speed ranges from 4 to 150 km/h, and rear and side collision avoidance are also supported. AEB supports reversing at speeds of up to 60 km/h. The system can recognize pedestrians, two-wheeled vehicles, along with vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. When encountering slippery road surfaces, the adaptive AEB function can predict and brake smoothly. In extreme situations where the braking distance is too short, the system can automatically avoid obstacles, bypassing them while braking.

Road and scene recognition in ADS 3.0 is vastly improved thanks to cloud and real vehicle training. This allows the system to understand the situation and make decisions closer to an experienced human driver. ADS 3.0 sees the upgrading to the GOD network (general obstacle detection) which builds upon the architecture seen with bird’s eye view (BEV) network and GOD network seen in ADS 2.0. These upgrade self-driving ability not only in terms of safety but the experience as well. There are now 160 parking scenarios supported.

Enabling the Dreamer’s smart driving capabilities are a suite of 27 sensors including high-definition cameras, and milimeter wavelength radars. New to the Dreamer is a 192-line Lidar unit from Huawei.

Full details about the 2025 Voyah Dreamer will become available over the coming weeks as the car readies to launch.

Currently, the 2025 version of the Exeed Exlantix ES is on pre-sales with the all-electric sedan due to launch on August 21. The ES was the first car in the Exlantix range from Exeed with deliveries beginning in December 2023. Since then, the range has been bolstered with the addition of the Exeed Exlantix ET SUV. However, it looks as if there may soon be a wagon version of the ES joining the range. In a tweet on social media Huang Zhaogen, GM of Exeed, showed a video featuring a wagon version of the Exeed Exlantix ES.

The overall style of the wagon version of the Exeed Exlantix ES is quite similar to the Nio ET5T. Up to the B-pillar, the wagon version of the ES seems largely identical to the sedan. At the front, there is an enclosed face with an air vent at the bottom of the fender. Through-type LED running lights wrap their way around the front of the car, and there are small slits for the main headlight clusters, below which are interactive display units composed of 740 LEDs. Although there is still some downward motion in the roof line, it no longer slopes anywhere near as quickly as with the sedan and ends some way off the furthest point of the rear. The sedan has a relatively slippery drag coefficient of 0.205Cd, but how the changes to the looks of the wagon will affect this is currently unknown.

Dimensions for the wagon version should be broadly in line with those of the sedan (see specs) which measures 4945, 1978, and 1467 mm and has a wheelbase of 3000 mm. Powertrain specifications are also likely to be very similar. Rear wheel drive versions of the 2025 model year use a 230 kW electric motor which can deliver 425 Nm of torque. Dual motor versions add a 123 kW electric motor to the front axle, which can deliver another 238 Nm of torque. The car comes with a choice of 77 or 100 kWh battery packs, both sourced from CATL. In the case of the 77 kWh battery pack it uses the Shenxing lithium iron phosphate battery, whereas the 100 kWh battery pack uses a ternary lithium battery.

According to speculation, the wagon version of the ES may come also as an extended-range EV as well as an all-electric car. It rides on the E0X high-end electric platform which is also shared with the ET SUV. Since its launch in May, the ET has come not only in all-electric form but also as an EREV.

Exeed is a high-end brand from Chery that sells both in China and overseas. Exlantix is a range of EVs and extended-range EVs, and it is known in China as Sterra. An export version of the Exeed Exlantix ES sedan was displayed earlier this year and the wagon would likely be a popular export.
