GAC Trumpchi has introduced two new ES9 (see specs) models, the PRO+ and MAX+ versions, with pricing of 229,800 and 249,800 yuan (31,650 USD and 34,400 USD), respectively. These prices remain the same as their predecessors. The latest models maintain the current models’ exterior and interior design but come with significant upgrades. The new vehicles are positioned as mid-to-large plug-in hybrid SUVs.

The Pro+ model offers more luxury and comfort than the previous Pro version. It has an AR-HUD head-up display system and a panoramic electric sunroof with an electric sunshade. It also has sound-insulating front windows, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a heated steering wheel, memory and auto-tilt rearview mirrors for parking, and wireless phone charging.
It has front-row leather seats with massage and ventilation. It also includes driver seat memory, electrically retractable driver seat cushioning, and lumbar support. The second-row seats are heated, and the third-row seats are electrically foldable.

The Max+ model has added safety features. It is upgraded with front fog lights, anti-glare high beams, and second-row aviation headrests. Additional features include AQS air quality control, facial recognition, gesture interaction, a bluetooth key, a knee airbag for the driver, and a collision warning vibration alert for the driver’s seat.
The new models have a 2.0T turbocharged plug-in hybrid system, delivering a maximum power of 274 kW and a peak torque of 630 Nm. The CLTC all-electric range is 143 km, with a combined CLTC range of 1,215 km and a fuel consumption of 6.18 L/100 km if the battery is depleted.
Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. (GAC), a leading Chinese automaker headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, plays a significant role in the ICE and NEV markets. GAC Group reported that in May 2024, GAC sales reached 178,500 units, a 23.7% month-on-month increase. GAC Aion sold approximately 40,000 units, a month-on-month increase of over 40%. GAC Trumpchi sold 32,881 units, including 12,642 MPVs. Other models achieved monthly sales of 10,985 units, with the GS3 accounting for 6,939 units.

Trumpchi... Lol

The car looks great, but the brand name ruined everything.

I guess it was named when China was still very poor and backward.

Spy shots have emerged of yet another new BYD. This one is a sedan and is believed to be a new Han. Most significantly the car is reported to use BYD’s new DM 5.0 technology for its powertrain and a Lidar unit is visible in at least some of the spy shots.

The car seems visually larger than the Seal 07 DM-i. While the new sedan seems to be at an early stage of testing as evidenced by the temporary front and rear taillights installations, we can still get some idea of the overall look of the new car. At the front the latest Dynasty series design language is carried through and there will be a central grille along with probably quite large headlight clusters.
From the sides, the car seems to retain much of the current Han lines while the rear is quite chunky. One of the spy shots clearly shows a roof-mounted Lidar unit and so we can expect top spec models to have significantly upgraded driving assistance features to those currently available in the Han.

The new car is believed to be powered by BYD’s DM 5.0 technology which debuted last month. This fifth-generation PHEV technology was first seen in the Qin L and Seal 06 DM-i cars which boast three headline figures of 46.06% thermal efficiency, 2.9 l/100 km fuel consumption and 2,100 km range. BYD’s use of NEDC for the fuel consumption figure has attracted a lot of controversy especially when MIIT uses WLTC for official listings – the best figure for the two cars under that regime is 3.8 l/100 km.

Given that the new car seems considerably larger than the Qin L (see specs) and Seal 06 DM-i (see specs) we can expect fuel consumption to be worse and additionally the maximum range will probably be lower. Our best indication of what to expect is the Seal 07 DM-i which was recently declared. Depending on version the fuel consumption figures are 4.2, 4.4 and 4.7 l/100 km for that car. The Seal 07 DM-i has a choice between 10.08 and 17.626 kWh battery packs which are meant to be good for all electric ranges of 55 and 100 km respectively. It should be noted that the 4.7 l/100 km figure is for the version which uses the more powerful 1.5T engine with maximum power of 115 kW, all previous DM 5.0 cars used a 74 kW 1.5 engine. The Han will almost certainly offer this engine in some versions.

Editor’s note:

Some Chinese sources are calling this a second-generation Han. This may or may not be the case, however, from the spy shots it looks more like it uses that existing Han’s styling as a starting point rather than being a new generation. Most likely this car will be known as the Han DM-i with perhaps a letter or number.

Finally!

Despite all the greatness, BYD lacks one most important thing, which is autonomous driving system.

Based on its size, the Atto 3 is listed as a C-segment SUV and is on a par with the Mazda CX-5 and Ford Territory.

The Atto 3 will be available in the Southeast Asian nation in two versions, including Dynamic and Premium.

The model is equipped with LED lights, follow-me-home headlights, an electric folding rear view mirror, and 17-inch wheels.

The Premium version features a sunroof, an adaptive headlight, an electric boot, and 18-inch wheels.

The interior of the Dynamic version boasts a 12.8-inch touchscreen that can rotate 90 degrees and a six-speaker sound system, while the interior of the Premium has a rotatable 15.6-inch touchscreen and an eight-speaker sound system.

The Atto 3 offers two battery pack options,-- the 49.92 kWh unit capable of traveling 410 kilometers and the 60.48 kWh battery pack rated at 480 kilometers.

The Atto 3 is equipped with an advanced driver-assistance system.

As for the BYD Dolphin, the EV measures 4,125 millimeters in length, 1,770 millimeters in width, and 1,570 millimeters in height. The wheelbase of the model is 2,700 millimeters.

The Dolphin will hit the Vietnamese market with the GLX version.

Similar to the Atto 3, the BYD Seal will be distributed in Vietnam in two versions, including the Advanced and Performance.

The Seal has the same size as the Toyota Camry and Mazda 6.

The model boasts an attractive appearance, a sunroof, pop-out door handles, soundproof doors, and 19-inch wheels.

The Seal is equipped with a rotatable 15.6-inch infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, a 10-speaker audio system, a panoramic sunroof, dual wireless smartphone chargers and heated and ventilated front seats.

The Advanced can travel up to 550 kilometers, while the Performance has a range of up to 650 kilometers on a single charge.

If I'm not mistaken, BYD's hybrid models sell really well in China so I'm not sure why they haven't introduced some of those models to Vietnam alongside their EVs. I could see those hybrid models doing well in Southeast Asia.

Dongfeng’s Voyah Zhiyin electric SUV, which has up to 901 km of range, will be assembled at the Dongfeng Nissan plant in Wuhan. The same factory also manufactures the Nissan Ariya EV. The Zhiyin EV will become Voyah’s fourth model. Moreover, it will be the cheapest model in the line since Voyah is moving downmarket to enhance sales volume.

Voyah showroom in China
Our regular readers know Voyah is a high-end NEV brand under Dongfeng that sells three models: Free SUV, Dream MPV, and Passion (Zhuiguang) sedan. However, its sales volume isn’t quite satisfying. Voyah has delivered 24,868 cars in China in the first five months of 2024. For comparison, Li Auto, considered one of Voyah’s rivals, delivered over 31,000 cars in January 2024 alone. Now, Voyah seeks for a cheaper product to boost its sales.

Voyah Zhiyin to be assembled at the same plant as Nissan Ariya

Chinese sources reported that the Voyah Zhiyin EV would be assembled at the Dongfeng Nissan plant in Wuhan. The original Voyah plant is also located in Wuhan. However, it is focused on manufacturing the existing Voyah-branded models. For this reason, the Zhiyin EV will roll off the production line alongside Nissan cars, including the Ariya electric SUV.

Voyah original plant in Wuhan
Here, we should underline that this so-called Nissan factory doesn’t manufacture only Nissan cars. It also assembles other models under Dongfeng, a typical strategy for this state-owned company. The same happens at the Zhengzhou Nissan plant, which also makes Venucia vehicles. However, these manufacturing sites are called after Nissan since cars assembled there mostly have a Japanese badge on them.

At the same time, information about the Voyah Zhiyin battery leaked online. Its top-trim level will have a 109-kWh ternary NMC pack from CATL. Thanks to this battery, the single-motor Zhiyin will be able to run up to 901 km on a single charge (CLTC cycle). According the previous regulator fillings, the Zhiyin also has LFP battery options.

More about Voyah Zhiyin

The Zhiyin is a mid-size crossover jointly developed by Voyah and Huawei. Its dimensions are 4725/1900/1636 mm with a wheelbase of 2900 mm. It stays close to the Tesla Model Y in terms of sizing. Its single-motor variant provides two e-motor options for 215 kW (288 hp) or 230 kW (308 hp). The 4WD variant has a peak power of 390 kW (523 hp).

The Zhiyin will be equipped with the Huawei Qiankun system and HarmonyOS technology. It will enter the market in Q4 this year with an approximate starting price of 200,000 yuan (27,550 USD). We will keep an eye on this gem, so stay tuned!

Yesterday we brought news that production of the Leapmotor T03 had already begun in Poland with full mass production due by September. The next model set for Polish production is believed to be a new SUV which goes via the internal codename of A12. Reports claim it will come with Lidar and high-end intelligent driving functions.

The car which has already been spied testing may get an unveiling at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November. Leapmotor fouder Zhu Jiangming recently outlined the company’s strategy saying that it would have four series of products by 2026. Currently, most of Leapmotor’s products fall into the C series which is aimed at the 150,000 yuan (20,650 USD) level market in China. The only product currently on sale that falls outside this is the T03 which was the company’s second model after the discontinued S01 coupe. In future the T series will mainly be aimed at overseas markets. The A series of which the A12 is the first model will focus on the 100,000 yuan (13,800 USD) level market. Finally, there will also be a new D series which will be aimed at the market above 200,000 yuan (27,550 USD).
Leapmotor founder Zhu Jiangming speaking
According to Fast Technology the new A12 will come with Lidar and high-end intelligent driving technology. If this is true, the new SUV will be highly competitive. The compact SUV is expected to come with both pure EV and extended range EV powertrains. Claims regarding the Lidar in the A12 are based on an interview Zhu Jiangming recently gave claiming that Leapmotor would release an A-class car next year priced at 100,000 yuan (13,800 USD) which may be equipped with Lidar and urban NOA functions.

Zhu has claimed that Leapmotor will take a leaf out of BYD’s book and be very focused on cost control. Through this as sales grow the cost advantage will be more significant and coupled with this refined management and product strength will be key factors.
Leapmotor’s second model to be produced at the Stellantis plant in Tychy, Poland is set to roll off the line next year. Reuters quoted analysts at Jeffries saying that sourcing of local components had already begun.
The news follows the EU announcement that tariffs on EVs imported from China would commence from July 4. Last year Stellantis acquired a fifth of Leapmotor and subsequently formed a joint venture, Leapmotor International under which Stellantis has the controlling 51% stake. The venture allows Stellantis to build, export, and sell Leapmotor products outside China.

Editor’s note:

Some years back I got to drive the Leapmotor T03 and I was very impressed given the price the level of equipment it came with, which included driving assistance aids. Time has obviously moved on but if Leapmotor really can produce a car with Lidar for around the 100,000 yuan level it would be amazing.
Updated: This article was updated to reflect the comments by Zhu Jiangming which gave rise to the story about the A12 coming with Lidar.
