The Pentagon has
named major pharmaceutical contractor
WuXi AppTec Co. to a list of firms associated with the Chinese military, a move that could threaten its business and complicate research being done by American drugmakers.
WuXi AppTec, based in China, has performed various services for many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, including drug discovery. As of 2024, WuXi was producing much of the active base ingredient used in
Eli Lilly & Co.’s obesity drug Zepbound, Bloomberg has reported.

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon has added several prominent Chinese businesses, including the
tech giant Alibaba, electric car
maker BYD and search engine Baidu, to its list of Chinese military companies, preventing them from getting U.S. defense contracts.
The list, updated and published Monday by the Pentagon, now sanctions well-known, non-state-owned Chinese companies that are not traditionally considered to be in the defense or security sector.
