Chinese processor a million times faster than US rival
15th March 2025, 05:29 GMT+11

The Zuchongzhi-3 chip vastly outperforms Googles Sycamore chip, according to its creators

Chinese scientists have unveiled a new superconducting quantum computing prototype they say operates a million times faster than one of Google's top quantum processors. The Chinese chip is also a quadrillion times more efficient than any conventionally built supercomputer, according to a statement issued by its creators.

Dubbed Zuchongzhi-3, the chip was developed by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in cooperation with half a dozen of the nation's scientific institutions. The USTC published the results of its research and the chip's performance analysis in an article for the Physical Review Letters earlier this month.

According to the university's statement, the testing showed that the new Chinese processor is a million times faster than Google's Sycamore processor. The US tech giant presented its quantum computer back in October 2024, boasting that it could surpass the fastest conventional supercomputers in performing computationally complex calculations.

"We are focused on developing practical applications for quantum computers that cannot be done on a classical computer," Google Quantum AI representatives said at the time. The USTC said in its statement that Zuchongzhi-3's computational speed outpaced that of the world's most powerful supercomputer by 15 orders of magnitude (a quadrillion times faster).

It is unclear how the newly unveiled chip compares to another Google product - the Willow quantum processor unveiled in December. The two have roughly similar processing capacities, although the Willow is reportedly slightly better than its Chinese rival when it comes to coherence time, a key parameter enabling more complex computations, according to Live Science. The US tech giant has not commented on the USTC statement.

Chinese companies have substantially boosted investments in AI and quantum computing after President Xi Jinping urged the nation to accelerate fundamental scientific research. Beijing is aiming to increase self-reliance in crucial areas, including chip-making, space exploration, and military sciences.

Bloomberg reported in October 2023 that Chinese companies and institutions applied for 29,853 AI-related patents in 2022, compared to 29,000 in the previous year. The figure is nearly 80% more than US filings.

OMG!!! 😱

This is insane! Unbelievable!!!

Is this real?

Not an CGI???

If this is real, this is another Sputnik moment again from China.

I never thought Chinese robot development progress is so quickly.

Isn't last year we have a robot that barely can walk?

Not only this can walk like human, but also running and dancing, so smooth and stable, almost like a human.

I can't wait to hear what USA media and politicians are going to say about this. 😅

I heard Beijing is going to held a running marathon competition for robot.

China is leaving everyone behind.

This is crazy!!!

A Chinese robotics company has launched and started to pre-sale the world's first full-size embodied intelligent humanoid robot featuring dexterous manipulation and straight-leg walking.

Priced from 199,000 yuan ($27,512), this 1.53-meter-tall, 62-kilogram industrial-grade operational humanoid robot has 41 degrees of freedom across its body, enabling it to autonomously perform tasks such as preparing breakfast and arranging plates, while also being suitable for applications in car factories, coffee shops, and pharmacies.

Announcement on the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor.

Proceeding as planned for a demo reactor after the test reactor last year.
CONFIRMED: China built and has brought to full power the world's first-ever thorium-containing molten salt reactor, the TMSR-LF1. Initial criticality occurred on Oct 11, 2023. Full power on June 17, 2024. Pa-233 from thorium was detected Oct 8, 2024.

It's the first MSR to run since the US shut down its MSRE in 1969, which ran on enriched U-235 and then later on thorium-derived U-233.

Commercial-scale thorium-fueled reactors have run in the past, (Indian Point 1, Shippingport, THTR), but this is the first MSR to do so.

(I had heard rumors that it ran already but haven't seen it confirmed until now)

British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has announced an investment of $2.5 billion in Beijing to establish its sixth global strategic R&D centre together with major research and manufacturing agreements that will further advance life sciences in China.

This investment over the next five years is part of a strategic partnership with the Beijing Municipal Government and the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area Administrative Office and includes agreements with three biotechs; Harbour BioMed, Syneron Bio, and BioKangtai, and follows the recent Fibrogen announcement. AstraZeneca expects its Beijing workforce to grow to 1,700 employees.

Pascal Soriot, Chief Executive Officer, AstraZeneca, said, “Our sixth strategic R&D centre will partner with the cutting-edge biology and AI science in Beijing and be a critical part of our global efforts to bring innovative medicines to patients worldwide.”

The new global strategic R&D centre in Beijing, AstraZeneca’s second in China following the opening of the Shanghai R&D centre, will advance early-stage research and clinical development and will be enabled by a new state-of-the-art AI and data science laboratory. The new R&D centre will be located near leading biotechs, research hospitals, and the National Medical Products Administration in the Beijing International Pharmaceutical Innovation Park (BioPark).

AstraZeneca is also establishing new R&D collaborations in Beijing. This includes a strategic partnership with the Beijing Cancer Hospital in translational research, data science, and clinical development. AstraZeneca is signing two collaboration and licensing agreements; one with Harbour BioMed to discover multi-specific antibodies, and one with Syneron Bio to develop macro-cyclic peptides.

In addition, AstraZeneca is launching a new joint venture with BioKangtai, to develop, manufacture, and commercialise innovative vaccines for respiratory and other infectious diseases for patients in China and around the world. This will be AstraZeneca’s first and only vaccine manufacturing facility in China, which will be located in the Beijing BioPark.
