Chinese 6th Generation Aircraft News & Discussions

A patent by SAC show a design similiar to J-50 is satisfied the requirement of being "Not Obserable".

Not Obsersable means the radiation is below -50dB, which is even lower than the atmospheric background radiation, so theoretically it is impossible for radar to find them.

To be honest I am kind of underestimated J-36/50 somewhat in the stealth department.

I was thinking that sixth generation fighters will be better than J-20/35 in all-around stealth, but only improve a little in front RCS department.

But it seems that China's sixth gen fighter design requirement is "Not Obserable", at least for front part.

So with the oversize next-gen radar and huge infra sensor at least found in J-36, and being not observable comparing to VLO in front, the gap between J-36/50 could be no smaller than the gap between J-20/35 and J-10/16.

Internal military excerise show J-20 can shot down J-10/16 easily, like 100:0, I just wonder the exchange if you pit J-36/50 against J-20/35.

J-36 is definitely not a pure fighter, it could put AWACS/EW/fighter/UAV commander role all in one, the chief designer of J-36 told the media power generation is among the highest priority for J-36, so it may need a new definition for this catergory of combat aircrafts.

J-50 somehow are more in line with traditional fighter role.

The hypothesis of the strong opponent are able to takes out our back line AWACS, so they are sharing some of the tasks to J-36, J-50, HALE flying wing drone and other full spectrum stealth platform.

The J-36 is, without question, an air superiority fighter - developed under sixth -generation combat doctrine with an emphasis on dominance in both BVR and WVR engagements.

It is purpose-built with extreme agility, high speed, long-range BVRAAM capabilities, and potentially direct-energy weapons - which are all hallmarks of true air dominance platforms. These characteristics are far beyond what’s expected from typical multirole or strike fighters.

Such design clearly aligns with the future vision of airspace control, not the versatility compromises of fighter-bombers. Yet, some continue to assess it using outdated metrics — a reflection of being mentally anchored in 4th-generation doctrines and nostalgic paradigms of past air combat.

The battlefield has changed — and the J-36 reflects that evolution; while those pilots are still trapped in old fighting (4th generation) doctrine.

no need to fight WVR, 6th gen will be a truly BVR jets with least emphasis on within visual range combat and will be a truly multi-role combat jet with stand-off missile/munition capability

J-50 will be more air superiority 6thh jet compare to J-36

Ideally yes, but sometimes wvr is unavoidable. Thats why air dominance fighter still need to be designed with high capability in wvr. And wvr is not the same as classical dogfight, modern wvr involve technology such as hms and high off boresight missile etc.

Hence air dominance fighters must still retain strong WVR capabilities, even in the 6th-gen era. It's not about dogfighting nostalgia, but about full-spectrum dominance.

Regarding J-50 will be more air superiority than J-36, we still have no clear idea at the moment.

They are all part of the future high level aerial engagement, where all platforms are ideally full spectrum stealthy. Hence, J-36, J-50 and the newly unveiled HALE flying wing drone, and the last missing puzzle H20 are likely all part of the bigger project, where the assumption is the enemy are likely going to take out any non stealth platform like AWAEC, tanker etc, so based on this assumption, more tasks are given to sixth gen platform.

I think the Yankee are also planning the same concept.
