Chinese 6th Generation Aircraft News & Discussions

look at the clear image of Chengdu's J-XX, it seems that it may really has 3 engines just like rumors suggested.

But that’s the debate that’s gonna ensue again, considering the delta design.

It will probably only be laid to rest when the US NGAD, with a similar layout, takes to the air and gets designated a fighter aircraft.

Btw, to borrow the B-2’s motto. This plane will also be able to say “If you see it, It wasn’t meant for you”

Well, the distinction between strike and air-superiority is getting less and less important nowadays. As it has good VLO, range, payload and supercruise it will perform strike and air-superiority mission equally well.

In fact I'd say China needs medium long range VLO strike platform more than another air-superiority platform.

Internet rumors recently sounds quite creditable.

According to the source of rumors, the Chengdu's 6th generation fighter is manned and has three engines, one for high-attitude and high-mach flight (e.g. mach 3.0 or even more), and the other two for conventional flight.

Whilst Shenyang's 6th generation fighter is unmanned, and has some shape-changing, transformer-like capabilities.

I hope both Chengdu and Shengyang's designs won, the unmanned "transformer" can be Chengdu fighters' wingman.

wow, if I squint really hard I can almost see the weapon bay outline..... tbh it is shorter than I thought

Considering the rurmors, if it can fly very high with high speed, even if it launch a PL-15, it will get a PL-17 range.

Besides, considering its sheer size, the weapon-bay is by no means small.

For sure the weapon bay is longer than J-20, likely able to hold much longer munitions even Ashm. Just that I was kind of expecting it extends all the way to the back.....

Apparently, the Shenyang design uses fully adjustable tail fins instead of no tail fins. In cruising mode, the tail fins are deployed flat, providing superior stealth performance and lift-drag characteristics. In maneuvering mode, the tail fins are erected, providing superior maneuverability and handling characteristics.
I'll quote from Mr FHN.

3 engines is very useful for being able to generate a lot of electrical power in addition to the thrust. It will make these platforms very capable for their EW capabilities on top of their kineric and load carrying performance.
