As for why CAC go with a huge size design, that must because Yang Wei's vision of next gen air-combat:
At the time when PLAAF field J-20, designers of J-20 have paid a visit to PLAAF, and has a talk with the PLAAF pilots:
During the meeting:
They ask a question to PLAAF pilots that why stealth fighter pilots improve their dogfight skills? And the answer is because they are stupid.
Yang Wei's vision of future aircombat is all about BVR and even beyond BVR.
J-36's design follow Yang Wei's vision of future air-combat one step further: Using high stealth, new mechanism radar, data fusion/data linking/AI, superior speed and superior altitude to hit your enemy long before they can found you, and leave the small amount but rather necessily close-combat/dog-fights to unmanned wingmens.

China didnot claim anything, but logically speaking China's two biggest fighter-makers bring out their next-gen prototypes and conduted maiden flight.
Whether it called sixth gen? well, as long as it is next-gen to the 5th gen, it is the sixth gen, the one who firstly bring out the next-gen make the definitions.

6th gen will have systems of systems qualities, J-36 will be true 6th gen jet, it's extremely early in its development, so J-36 will have all these qualities you refer, wait for few more year to complete its development
