Guangdong Data Center Power Use Surges 21.1% in First Half as AI Boom Drives Demand

(Yicai) July 22 -- Electricity consumption by data centers in China’s Guangdong province soared 21.1 percent in the first half from a year earlier as rapid growth in large artificial intelligence models, big data and the industrial internet fueled demand for computing power.

The southern province’s 309 data centers consumed 5.97 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first six months, Guangdong Power Grid, a unit of China Southern Power Grid which is one of the country’s two main power utility firms, told Yicai yesterday.

Shaoguan recorded the fastest growth in data center electricity use, with consumption more than quintupling in the six months ended June 30 from a year earlier as new facilities started operations and existing capacity expanded. The city is home to the only national-level data center cluster within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area national computing hub and supports the overflow of large-scale intelligent computing demand from the region’s two hub cities Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Reliable power infrastructure is critical to the operating costs and stable performance of computing projects. Guangdong Power Grid is ensuring adequate power supply for the sector by providing comprehensive support spanning planning, grid infrastructure and services, it said.

Every additional 10,000 standard server racks requires about 25,000 megawatts of new power load, Hu Lieliang, deputy general manager of the planning and development department at China Southern Power Grid’s Guangdong Shaoguan Power Supply Bureau, told Yicai.

“We plan substations the same way we plan server racks, advancing the construction of grid infrastructure so that the power grid and computing capacity expand in tandem,” he added.

The medium to long-term increase in electricity demand from computing power is expected to remain significant.

Electricity consumption by China’s computing sector is likely to rise by more than 100 billion kilowatt-hours on average each year between 2026 and 2030, reaching 800 billion kilowatt-hours in 2030, or about 6 percent of the country’s total electricity consumption, Zhang Lin, director of the China Electricity Council’s planning and development department, said at a press conference last week.

China’s computing centers consumed 170 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last year, accounting for 1.6 percent of the country’s total power consumption, according to data released previously by the National Energy Administration.

China's industrial profits rise 18.7% in H1​

Profits at China's major industrial firms posted solid growth in the first half of 2026, buoyed by surging earnings in electronics-related industries and the rapid expansion of new growth drivers, official data showed on Monday.

Industrial enterprises with an annual main business revenue of at least 20 million yuan ($2.95 million) reported combined profits of 3.95 trillion yuan in the January-June period, up 18.7 percent year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The growth rate was 3.2 percentage points higher than in the first quarter. In June alone, industrial profits rose 15.1 percent from a year earlier, the bureau said.

The robust performance, according to Yu Weining, a statistician with the bureau, was largely driven by strong gains in electronics-related industries and sectors linked to new growth drivers.

In the first half, profits in the electronics sector surged 96.9 percent year-on-year, contributing 8.5 percentage points to overall profit growth among major industrial firms, NBS data showed.

"Artificial intelligence became more deeply integrated across sectors, sharply boosting demand for computing power," Yu said, adding that profits in integrated circuit manufacturing soared 2,579.5 percent.

New growth drivers provided further support. Among industries supporting connectivity within data centers, profits at optical fiber and optical cable manufacturers jumped 410.4 percent and 39.8 percent, respectively, the NBS said.

The raw materials manufacturing sector also reported rapid growth, with profits rising 71.7 percent year-on-year and contributing 8.8 percentage points to overall industrial profit growth, NBS data showed.

"Profits at major industrial firms posted strong growth in the first half," Yu said, while cautioning that industrial firms continued to face insufficient market demand and cash-flow pressures amid a complex external environment and uncertainty over global commodity prices.

Looking ahead, Yu called for continued efforts to foster emerging and future industries while upgrading traditional sectors in the next phase, so as to ensure a smooth transition between old and new growth drivers.
