The Origins of the WS-10 Engine:

In 1987, Institute 606 began developing the WS-10 engine. This is the publicly available date; the actual start date is much earlier. The core direction was reverse engineering the core engine of the American CFM-56II turbofan engine, while simultaneously developing the peripheral systems of the core engine independently.

In 1989, the WS-10 engine completed its first test.

In 1992, the first batch of 12 Su-27 fighter jets purchased by China from Russia arrived at the Wuhu Air Force Base in China. Subsequently, China's Flanker fighter jet system began.

China and Russia have never reached any ToT agreement regarding the AL-31 series engines. However, cooperation on a major overhaul facility for the AL-31 series engines was included along with the major cooperation agreement for the Su-27/J-11.

Chinese engineers conducted in-depth technical analysis and reverse engineering through the overhaul work of the AL-31 series engines. These technological capabilities have led to a longer service life for the original Russian AL-31 engine in China than in Russia, with many replacement parts now produced in China, eliminating reliance on Russia.

This experience gained by Chinese engineers in the AL-31 engine field has also been incorporated into the subsequent upgrades and improvements of the WS-10 series engines.

This is the true origin of their connection.

Their problem with you appears to be that you used China's commercial engine capability's current relative backwardness compared to RR and GE as reasoning to promote the idea that China's military engine capabilities are behind.

While WS-20 is finally done and CJ-1000 is nearing service and CJ-2000 is still in development, China's commercial aviation engines are indeed behind the latest and greatest from RR and GE but is already pretty much near France and Russia.

On military turbofans, China has already fielded WS-15. Your original claim is that the Chinese WS-10 series engines used by the J-11 and J-16 must be weaker than counterparts like F110 and maybe that's why they used larger wings. Anyway the whole point is stop being disingenuous with mixing commercial engines and military engines when it suits your frankly poor argument.

Chinese military turbofans absolutely are in US league already. Many VCEs flying while the US has one program. Yes China came later than the US to the 5th gen engine stage with only putting WS-15 into service in recent years while F119 came into service over 15 years ago. But they have moved slowly and for China the bottlenecks from previous decades have long been defeated. WS-15 program was restarted once despite having produced an engine that worked well and was nearly completed back in the late 2010s. The higher ups wanted one that made use of the newer discoveries and technologies available to the Chinese engine industry while the original WS-15 was developed. Similar sort of development vs tech availability process is the Lexus LFA story where the chassis was developed with aluminium or titanium while carbon fibre tech wasn't as mature but the higher ups then decided to go with carbon fibre so the engineers had to restart many aspects of the program. The pace is frankly insanely fast relative to everyone else who has a horse in the race.

You will see proliferation and mass production like with Chinese cars. Really shit, acceptable, okay, compelling, interesting to suddenly overwhelmingly superior. That last jump is basically where we are. The 6th gens are likely to arrive into service with VCE intended engines according to some sources.
