The J-16's latest radar and avionics—apart from not being stealthy—aren't inferior to fifth-gen fighters at all.

China Makes First Deployment of Top-Tier Fighters to Egypt: How Capable is the J-16?

August-20th-2026

he Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force has deployed its J-16 heavyweight fighters outside Asia for the first time with at least six of the aircraft having been identified as part of the deployment for the Eagles of Civilisation 2026 China-Egypt air exercise, which is scheduled to run from mid-August into early September. The deployment represents an important step up from last year’s China-Egypt exercise. In 2025, J-10C fighters were deployed alongside the KJ-500 airborne early-warning and control system and other support platforms for the first joint air exercise between the two countries. The J-16 is much larger twin engine counterpart to the J-10C, with the two having been developed in parallel.

The Chinese deployment also includes a KJ-500 airborne early-warning and control aircraft, allowing J-16s and Egyptian Air Force fighter types to operate under the direction of an airborne command-and-control platform capable of detecting and tracking aircraft over a much wider area. This allows the exercise to focus on networked air combat, coordinated engagements and larger force packages rather than basic fighter manoeuvring. A Y-20 strategic transport aircraft is also supporting the deployment, and can provide airborne refuelling support.

The J-16 is by far the most capable fighter type China has ever deployed for exercises abroad, and alongside the J-20, J-35 and the new carrier-based J-15T, it is one of the four most capable fighter types in Chinese service. Although it is a fourth generation fighter and lacks advanced stealth features, its sensor capabilities have been widely assessed to be the most formidable in the world, with its radar combining sheer size and sophistication in a way no non-Chinese fighter type has. The fighter’s radar is approximately four times as large or larger than those of Egyptian Air Force F-16s, MiG-29s, and Rafales, and significantly more sophisticated.

Preceding Eagles of Civilisation 2026, J-16s were only deployed abroad to the Russian Far East and to Pakistan, which makes their arrival in Egypt a major landmark for the expansion of China’s military footprint abroad. The J-16 is one of the longest ranged fighter types in the world, with a considerably longer range on internal fuel than any fighter type in the Western world. The aircraft is a heavily enhanced derivative of the Soviet Su-27 Flanker design, and compared to Russian derivatives such as the Su-35 it makes much higher use of more advanced composite materials, while integrating considerably more sophisticated avionics and weapons. The Egyptian Air Force operations only short and medium range fighters, with prior orders placed in 2018 to procure the Su-35 having been cancelled due to Western political pressure.

The contrast between the capabilities of the contingent China has deployed to Egypt, and Egypt’s own indigenous capabilities, remains significant. Other than three squadrons of MiG 29M fighters ordered from Russia in 2015, which were the least costly and least capable Russian fighter types in production, all of Egypt’s fourth generation fighters are of Western origin and have been heavily downgraded for political reasons. The close to 200 F-16s that form the backbone of the fleet are considered among the least capable fourth generation fighters in the world, and have been downgraded extensively and restricted to using obsolete Cold War era weaponry, and no beyond visual range air to surface weapons whatsoever. Unconfirmed reports indicate that despite Western political pressure, Egypt may have ordered the J-10C to provide a much more viable combat capability.
