Yeah, I tried that too. Pinyin means you need to have some idea of pronunciation / tone of the character. Typically I read, that too from printed text. And when I encounter something new I look into dictionary. These days it is much easier due to all the software (but then all language lookup is easy these days) but when I started in 2000s it was really hard.

Take this one "感触". I saw this written somewhere. Now to use Pinyin, I will need to have an idea of tones of these two. Or perhaps from the sentence I can guess what it will be. Then you can find the them in a dictionary based on Pinyin.

Otherwise I have rely on Radical and strokes method.

In English, if you know alphabets (total 52, 26 upper and 26 lower case), you can then lookup the dictionary. Thats why self learning of words and building vocabulary is pretty simple in English.

One of my cousin from India did it... for an exam (old GRE). Now he uses those stupid words and everyone has a blank face because a lot of those words are not used in common usage. LOL!

Learning Chinese will make children of the west in particular smarter. Or some such challenge. With all the tools and visual aids, we have made education too easy.

Learning more than one language almost always makes one more aware and sharper. There are things for which you do not have words in one language but you have in other language. There are concepts that are totally missing from one language but is absolutely necessary in another.

Even things like colors. Different languages deal with them in totally different ways.

One problem with Pinyin is that too many Chinese characters have same or very similar pronunciations, so if one just use Pinyin to write Chinese language, the words can be easily get mixed up unless the context of the words are also known. That's one reason something like alphabet Pinyin phonetic spelling system will never replace Chinese characters.

Exactly! Chinese writing can not be reliably done in a phonetic system. It requires iconographic writing.

Hindi is polar opposite. It writing is purely phonetic. Its words are often multisyllabic. And it does not have as many homophones. So you write as you speak and you use multiple syllables for making different words.

English is kind of in-betwee.

No, man.. Hindi it is, Hindi easy to pick up too.. India wide me chalti hai, that's good enough.

Because India, aferall, is such a microcosm of the world itself with such tremendous diversity.. Hindi binds us together, Hindi will bring the whole world together.

Not happening. The languages of science, math, computer are all written in alphabets. There is no place for ideograms anymore.
 
Chinese language has the least complicated grammar of all major languages, the grammar is straight forward and simple, it doesn't have the confusing many forms of verb tenses and there are no new words for plurals.
 
It seems everyone is ignoring the elephant in the room.
English became international language for many reasons Chinese can't match.
First and foremost, colonization, major inventions were made by English people, or at least stolen by English. Programming languages, the need for work and computer forced people to learn English. It doesn't matter how hard a language is, if there's a need people will learn it. Windows and iOS, I'll never need Chinese operating system. Mind you this especially applies to work. Not to mention almost all products made in China for international use, uses English.
Then comes soft power, like Hollywood, how many Chinese actors do you follow or look up to?Rambo? Lord of the rings? Music genres like pop or hip hop. East Coast vs West Coast. Major leagues like NHL, NBA AND NFL. Westerners also had way of life that was attractive to foreigners. Also, there's way too many countries supporting this international concept. From North America to European countries, Australia. Heck, compare people sending their kids to English vs Chinese language schools?

As Spaniard listening Chinese people trying to speak Spanish, I can tell you, they never can speech well if they learn it when they are adults.

So it must be some big differences between Chinese language talked and Latin languages like Spanish.

There are of course folks who studied in China, but mostly in my time people with money prefer sending their kids to US, Australia, and Britain for university level education.

Man, we are already in digital world. Half of kids in my brother house neighborhood speak English when they play together.

Dont make it too difficult, some time I ask one of my best friend speak English when we talk to each other in order to maintain our pronunciation skills

In Jakarta, professional events some time held by foreign companies and it is English that is used on the events
