Over 157,000 students out of school after deadly quake in Kunar​

KUNAR (TOLONews): In the earthquake-affected areas of Kunar province, 157,074 students have been deprived of education.

The head of the provincial education department told TOLOnews that as a result of the earthquake, 391 students lost their lives and 760 others were injured.

Mohibullah Haidari, Kunar’s education director, said: “Across Kunar, 157,074 students are currently deprived of education. In the earthquake, 391 students and three teachers were killed, while 760 students and 20 teachers were injured.”

In Kunar, as in other warm provinces, the academic year begins on September 6 (15th of Sunbula), but thousands of students in quake-hit areas have been unable to resume classes.

They are calling on authorities and aid organizations to ensure that they can continue their studies.

Hekmatyar, a student, said: “The earthquake completely destroyed our school. I am very sad because there is no school here where we can study. In our own village, the school was also destroyed, and we were forced to come to this camp.”

Salma, a student, said: “Our school has been destroyed, and I am deeply saddened by this. My request is that our school be rebuilt so I can study and become a doctor in the future.”

Shamsurrahman, a 40-year-old man from the Shaheedan area of Suki district in Kunar, is one of the survivors of last week’s deadly earthquake. He lost one of his sons in the disaster.

Now living in a temporary camp, he said their local school was destroyed in the quake, leaving his children without access to education.

Shamsurrahman said: “Three of my children were students. One was killed and two others were injured. The earthquake completely destroyed our school, and nothing remains of it. My children now live with me in this tent and are sad because they can no longer go to school, and no one is helping them.”

Kunar’s education department added that the earthquake completely destroyed 53 schools and partially damaged 253 others.

Heavy rain, flash floods kill 77, injure 137 in Afghanistan​

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 77 people have died and 137 others injured due to heavy rainfall and flash floods over the past two weeks across Afghanistan, the National Disaster Preparedness Authority (NDPA) said on Saturday.

Hafiz Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, head of the NDPA’s Information and Communications Department, said that in the past 48 hours alone, rainfall, floods, landslides, and lightning incidents caused 26 deaths and 48 injuries in Kabul, Panjshir, Parwan, Daikundi, Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Logar, Ghazni, Zabul, Uruzgan, Helmand, Herat, Nimroz, Farah, Ghor, Badghis, Balkh, Sar-e-Pul, Jawzjan, Faryab, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar and Nuristan provinces.

He added that during the same period, 126 houses were completely destroyed, 617 partially damaged, and 49 shops were damaged.

According to Hamad, 98 water wells and networks, 3,172 jeribs of agricultural land, and 183 livestock were also lost, affecting a total of 1,189 families.

Since March 24 up to today (April 4), nationwide rainfall and flooding have resulted in 77 deaths and 137 injuries.

Hamad further reported that 793 houses were completely destroyed, 2,673 partially damaged, 337 kilometres of roads were damaged, 11,676 jeribs of agricultural land were destroyed, and a total of 5,811 families have been affected by natural disasters.

28 killed in floods across Afghanistan over two days​

KABUL (TOLOnews): The National Disaster Preparedness Authority says that since Hamal 6 of the current solar year, 285 people have been killed and another 354 injured as a result of various natural disasters across the country.

According to officials, the recent floods have completely or partially destroyed nearly 9,000 houses and caused widespread financial losses.

The authority also announced that in the past 48 hours alone, 28 people have died and 10 others have been injured following floods in 17 provinces across the country.

Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, spokesperson for the National Disaster Preparedness Authority, said: “Alhaj Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, head of the authority, has instructed all provincial offices to use all available resources to urgently assist affected families and distribute necessary aid.”

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has warned of continued rainfall and the possibility of further flooding in the coming days.

Mohammad Nasim Moradi, head of the Meteorological Department, said: “According to weather forecasting models, scattered rainfall is expected today and tomorrow in parts of the north, northeast, and central regions of the country, with precipitation levels ranging between 10 and 30 millimeters in different areas.”

The latest casualties followed the deaths of at least 148 people, as well as 137 wounded, across the country owing to flooding and rain in April.

Afghanistan frequently experiences deadly floods, landslides and storms, particularly in remote areas with fragile infrastructure.

Among the poorest countries in the world after decades of war, Afghanistan is particularly exposed to the effects of climate change, which scientists say is spurring extreme weather.

Afghans search for dozens missing after devastating flood​

Around 100 people unaccounted for as citizens use wooden poles, bare hands to search for missing in Parun

Rescuers were struggling to reach residents trapped under mud and boulders in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, after a major flood smashed through one province killing at least 23 people

Around 100 people are unaccounted for, the national disaster agency and the provincial governor's office said, also updating the death toll from Monday's deluge.

An AFP journalist saw dozens of people gathered in remote Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, using wooden poles and their bare hands to search for the missing.

Farid Gul Zaheer, a 34-year-old pharmacist, said he had "never witnessed such a dangerous flood". "It felt like there was an earthquake, and I heard children and people screaming," he told AFP, after getting injured while trying to flee up the mountain.

On Tuesday, a bulldozer was of limited use in clearing some debris in Parun, where the flood had buried multiple shops and brought huge boulders that smashed into buildings.

Parun's mayor and other government employees were among the missing, the governor's office said on Monday.

Zakirullah Zaki, manager of the Spogmai Hotel, said it felt like "an act of God struck us". "The rest of the hotels, markets, and shops were completely destroyed," the 29-year-old told AFP.

The Spogmai was still standing, surrounded by destruction, and the manager's missing younger brother was found.

'Traumatised'

Juma Khan Nayel, communications chief for the Afghan Red Crescent Society, described a "devastating situation" with water rising to unprecedented levels.

They have deployed dozens of volunteers who are working by hand, using shovels.

"Right now, urgently, we are supplying some food," water and tents for those whose homes have been destroyed, he told AFP.

Afghanistan's defence ministry said the military had been deployed to the area to support the relief effort, while the United Nations said it was assessing the disaster.
