Egyptian Air Defense

Egypt replaced 65 SA-2 batteries. Initially, Egypt upgraded 40 batteries, then withdrew. It is believed that Egypt operates only 16 batteries. The replacement process was carried out with the HQ-18 system. Egypt previously obtained six batteries. This system is considered equivalent to the Russian S-300V system, perhaps a continuation of the eight S-300VM batteries. Regarding the HQ-9BE system, Egypt purchased six batteries for $1.2 billion, including 1,152 missiles and systems. Egypt has a pipeline to acquire anti-missile systems. Only the S-400 and THAAD systems were available. The HQ-9BE system may be an option, but with special specifications. Even the S-300VM system, which Egypt acquired in 2015, required modifications. Upon delivery, deliveries were halted for other modifications. Typically, with Russian weapons, Egypt requests updates to Western armament levels, followed by refurbishment. Rumors are circulating that Egypt has acquired the S-350 system, which is believed to be within the standard range. The second is to upgrade and integrate with the S-300VM systems.

Would there not have been value in keeping those SA-2 batteries to take on large Israeli UAT/drones in the future ? They still have military value ? Appreciate there is an ongoing maintenance cost, but capability that to me at least, still feels useful as people navigate the world of drones.

I read in one report that there are 16 batteries in service, in addition to more than 70 S-125M systems to counter some air targets. After their development, the price of S-75 missiles increased to Mach 4.5 as part of the developments for new production in the late 1980s.
Their retirement from air defense missions may be used in another field. For example, the missiles could be repurposed as surface-to-surface missiles with a range of up to 250 kilometers.
SA-2/S-75 launchers can carry FATH-110 missiles, which are Iranian missiles with a 500-kilogram warhead and a range of 300-500 kilometers.

Although the Russians are attempting to use SA-2/3/6 missiles to counter drones, given the large numbers they have that can be reused, matters are measured by economic feasibility, especially since Egypt widely uses anti-drone weapons, whether electromagnetic pulse weapons, microwave weapons, or laser cannons, which have begun to be used. Entering a number of them into service and testing other models for local manufacture. Unlike Egypt, drones have been used to confront drones for many years. Egyptian SA-7 missiles were developed for use against drones, perhaps more than 10 years ago, as they were considered a new threat to air defenses at the time. In addition to specializing in part of the effort of the Apache and Kamov helicopters against drones, and the widespread deployment of 14.5/23 mm artillery in huge numbers after developing them, whether with radars or night vision and electro-optical systems to confront the flooding of drones, because Egypt also uses drones extensively and with high specialization in confronting various enemy targets. Therefore, we fully declare the seriousness of the threats and their widespread spread.

The Egyptian air defense.. the most diverse in the world

The United States recently agreed to a major defensive deal with Egypt worth $ 4.67 billion, including the advanced air defense systems, "NASAMS", along with the "Amraam" and "Sidewinder" missiles, in a move that enhances the capabilities of the Egyptian Air Defense Network that is among the most diverse and integrated in the world.

This latest deal reflects Egypt's balance in arming its forces, as its defensive arsenal includes a global mixture of advanced systems. From the United States, Cairo obtained NASAMS, Hawk and Avenger systems, while it depends on Russia to operate the S-300VM, Buk-M2, and possibly BUK-M3 “Viking” despite the absence of any picture of it in Egypt, but according to previous official statements to Russian officials carried by Russian newspapers, Egypt asked to obtain this system and may have already contracted it.

China was also included among its military partners through the long-range HQ-9B system, as well as its dependence on European equipment such as the French Thales company and German IRIS-T systems. This arsenal is not only limited to imports, but also includes locally developed systems, most notably the "Sky Guard Amun" system and Egyptian radars ESR-32A/B, as well as long-range secret systems whose details have not been revealed yet.

This diversity in the sources of armament reflects a strategic philosophy based on avoiding dependence on one side, which gives Egypt a wide margin of maneuvering and flexibility in its international relations, and fortifying its weather defenses from penetration or disruption in the event of restrictions on a specific party. The Egyptian defense structure is also based on the concept of multi -layer defense, where the systems overlap and integrate to cover the Egyptian airspace comprehensively, ensuring that threats are repelled, whether they are planes, missiles, or paths.

In addition to its use of these systems, Egypt has become an emerging player in the arms market, as it began exporting some of its systems such as Sky Guard to African and Arab countries, which puts it in a productive and exporting location at the same time. This position reinforces a human force exceeding 80,000 in the Egyptian Air Defense, supported by research and development centers that improve performance and update capacity.

The Egyptian air defense system does not represent only a technical barrier to protect the airspace, but rather embodies a political and strategic direction that reflects the pluralism of partnerships and the independence of the decision, which makes this system one of the main pillars in the structure of the regional power of Egypt.

Rezonans-NE detects ballistic missiles, Stealth planes and hyper-sonic objects, with the ability of monitoring the Egyptian, Syrian and Israeli air for up to 1,200 km.

Rezonans-NE relies on the VHF ultra-high frequency band with metric wavelengths, which gives it a significant advantage in detecting stealth targets that are difficult to track with conventional radars. It also has a high ability to resist heavy electronic interference and obstruction, ensuring that it continues to operate efficiently even in the most complex electronic warfare environments.

Russian reports also indicated that Egyptian radar is capable of detecting American F-35 fighters even while they are stationed inside their air bases in Israel, which strengthens its position as one of the most powerful early warning systems in the region.

Rezonans-NE is classified as an over-the-horizon radar (Over The Horizon - OTH) powered by Metric Wave Band technology. Its mechanism of action is based on the principle of reflecting radar waves onto the ionosphere in the atmosphere, which doubles its ability to capture targets and limits the effectiveness of stealth technologies. Unlike traditional radars whose waves travel in a straight, range-bound line, this technology gives Rezonans-NE an exceptional ability to detect targets from very long distances.

Thus, the Egyptian "Beyond the Horizon" radar represents a qualitative addition to the Egyptian air defense system, as it provides a unique ability to monitor and observe any hostile air activity in a wide strategic environment that transcends national borders, making it a fundamental pillar of the regional early warning system.

I think like Morocco, and UAE, Eygpt should ask for the the SkyLock Dome and Barak MX systems. A very good defense systems.

Egypt doesn't trust Israel enough to buy weapons from them..

Air Defense Commander
💪 We are able to convert our sky into hell to enemies.
The Egyptian air defense is the largest and most complex air defense weapon in the world.
✌️ Men are working in silence, they keep the sky its prestige, inevitably those who believe that he can disturb our sky, as it is in the face of the enemies of iron nets and steel walls that cannot be penetrated
We have modern systems to face the fifth generation of warplanes.
And whoever threatens our sky, we will turn it into hell.

China integrates TYPE-780 warning radar onto HQ-9B air defense batteries.
The air defense system that China has been most interested in over the past years and the system that has been developed the most..
This system is supported by a radar system that works like a spider's web, making it possible to blind the missile and make it miss its target.
