The file of the Egyptian M1A1 Abrams tanks has returned to the media attention again, as it is one of the most prominent pillars of the armored force in the Egyptian army over the past decades. The re-emergence of this file was not linked to an announcement regarding the production of additional batches, but rather came in the context of highlighting a comprehensive modernization program that affected these tanks, whose name has historically been linked to a pivotal role in deterrence and border protection.

Egypt is one of the largest users of the M1A1 Abrams tank in the region, as the number of tanks operating within its fleet is estimated at about 1,130 tanks that have gradually entered service since the early 1990s as part of the military cooperation program with the United States.

With regard to local production, Cairo, through Military Factory 200, has succeeded in implementing a partial assembly and manufacturing program for the tank inside Egypt, as estimates indicate that more than half of the fleet (about 500 to 600 tanks) is currently undergoing modernization programs to the M1A1 SA standard, with the proportion of the local component gradually being raised in some parts and the manufacturing and maintenance stages.

The US administration gave the green light to conclude a major military deal with Egypt to modernize its defense capabilities. This agreement, which was announced on Friday, December 20, 2024 and is valued at more than $5 billion, represents an important step in the ongoing cooperation between Washington and Cairo. The deal includes the comprehensive modernization of 555 M1A1 Abrams tanks in the Egyptian army, ensuring that these tanks remain equipped with the latest technologies to face future combat scenarios.

In addition to upgrading the tanks, the deal includes the acquisition of Hellfire missiles and precision-guided munitions. These advanced weapons systems will enhance Egypt's operational effectiveness, providing more accurate and powerful tools to deal with the evolving security challenges in the region.

This decision affirms the well-established defense relationship between the United States and Egypt, with both countries committed to enhancing regional stability and security. This deal also highlights the United States' continued support for Egypt's military modernization efforts, strengthening the country's role as a key ally in the Middle East.

The US State Department has approved this major military deal worth $5 billion directed at modernizing the Egyptian Abrams tank fleet. $4.69 billion has been allocated to upgrade 555 M1A1 tanks to the “M1A1 SA” (Situational Awareness) version, which includes advanced technologies such as the “FBCB2” command and control system and a thermal sight for the 12.7 mm machine gun. The tanks will also receive improved armor protection that includes depleted uranium components, a feature that was excluded from tanks sent to Ukraine in late 2023. Additionally, $630 million will be used to purchase 2,183 Hellfire missiles, and $30 million will be used to acquire precision-guided munitions.

It is noteworthy that the Egyptian military fleet includes 1,130 M1A1 Abrams tanks, the first batch of which was assembled locally starting in 1992 in cooperation with the United States. Egypt remains the only country outside the United States authorized to produce M1A1 tanks locally.

The M1A1 Abrams tank is a third-generation main battle tank. It weighs 63 tons and is equipped with a 120 mm M256 smoothbore gun. The tank operates with a 1,500 horsepower turbine engine, can reach speeds of up to 67 km/h, and has an operational range of about 426 km. It is also armed with a 12.7 mm M2 heavy machine gun and two 7.62 mm M240 machine guns. The tank's advanced composite armor includes Chobham technology and layers of depleted uranium, providing significant protection against a wide range of threats.

The Egyptian Tank Factory in Cairo will undertake the modernization programme, enhancing local maintenance capabilities and self-reliance. This upgrade is expected to achieve cost efficiencies by simplifying the supply of spare parts from the United States and reducing maintenance costs for both Egypt and American security partners. The program will also include night vision sets, thermal imaging systems, smoke grenade launchers, and new engines and transmission systems. American contractors will provide ongoing technical support for up to ten years.

This deal is consistent with broader US efforts to maintain regional stability and strengthen defense relations with Egypt, as a key non-NATO ally. By enhancing Egypt's military capabilities, this modernization ensures better operational compatibility with US and allied forces. Despite some human rights concerns, the deal signals continued US-Egyptian cooperation, strengthening Egypt's strategic role in the Middle East. General Dynamics Land Systems, based in Michigan, will be the prime contractor for the program. The deal is expected to enhance Egypt's defense readiness without disturbing the regional military balance.
