Apparently Egypt makes a version of loitering munitions (drones) with CASIC & Norinco that are similar to Iran’s Shaheds. The Egyptian version is in a specialized Renault vehicle that they manufacture locally like this one & it carries five of the drones (showing soon!) ..

Highly recommend this on U.S.-Egyptian defense & intelligence ties by a retired U.S. Army Special Forces colonel and Foreign Area Officer referring to EAF as being “One of the most secretive militaries”. Pretty deep, and rare, perspective from U.S. personnel on the complicated U.S.-Egyptian defense ties and how the Egypt’s military establishment truly sees the U.S. as well as Israel and how the Egyptian military’s shift away from the U.S. in recent years may have weakened the Camp David framework between U.S-Egypt-Israel

Someone conveniently caught a glimpse of one of the anti-radiation loitering munitions (drones) made by Amstone, an intriguing private defense firm in Egypt, just recently at the international air show. This looks like one of the variants of the ASN301 loitering munitions from China (based off of Israeli Harpy designs) that Egypt manufactures so I’m guessing this is a derivative of those munitions that Egyptian firms might now be marketing. Interestingly, Amstone also markets warheads for ballistic missiles on its website so if you need some they have several options

gypt’s move to nationalize Suez in 1956 is probably the most daring geopolitical move in MENA I have no idea how they took the gamble of taking on the British & French Empires & Israel & in some ways, the US itself, & got away with it…IMHO, they ended Great Britain in 1956.

Egypt’s air defense structure & deployment posture has also been changing with new bases like this one for S300V4 & IRIS-T SLM (notice several distinct units here). Other air defenses like S350 or BUK-M2/BUK-M3 etc have been getting their own hardened shelter sites as well

I like Egypt’s emphasis on precision guided munitions, JDAM-style kits, longer-range munitions & missiles, smart bombs, drones (MALE/HALE UAV/UCAV) & loitering munitions (kamikaze drones), fire & forget anti-tank guided missiles, those were all gaps that needed to be filled

Edge is rumored to be in talks with the Egyptians over the Halcon/Rheinmetall Skynex Skyknight a short range air defense system specialized in countering saturation attacks from a wide spectrum of threats.

1726816663591.jpeg

The system combines Rheinmetall’s RG MK3 guns with missile launch units for Halcon’s Skyknight missile. With up to 4 MLUs per battery and 60 missiles per launcher, a single battery can have 240 ready to fire missiles enabling a sturdy defense against saturation attacks.

1726817070684.jpeg

With its ability to track 100 targets simultaneously via AESA and EO for passive detection. Halcon claims the skyknight can intercept Rocket Artillery Mortar (RAM) threats at a range of 4Km, precision guided munitions and cruise missiles at 6Km, fixed/rotary wing and UAVs at 10Km

1726817126660.jpeg

These ranges imply the system is intended to serve mostly as a last line of defense taking on projectiles as they drop towards their target, it also possesses the ability to fire on the move enhancing its survivability and tactical uses.

1726817169693.jpeg

If acquired by the Egyptian armed forces Skyknight would likely protect critical sites and positions in range of enemy firing positions, serving as an analogue to Iron dome albeit with a shorter range, this provides Egypt with a much needed C-RAM and anti saturation capability.

Egypt is preparing to participate in the manufacture of the engine for the Korean “Thunder” howitzer, as the media advisor to the Ministry of Military Production and the Ministry’s spokesman revealed that the Helwan Castings Company (Military Factory 9) is preparing to start manufacturing the body of the new Korean engine SMV for the K9A1 EGY howitzer, which is also being manufactured. locally.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Military Production indicated that Engineer Muhammad Ali Khalifa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Helwan Castings Company (Military Factory 9), received a delegation from Hanno Aerospace STX, the engine manufacturer, to follow up on developments in joint cooperation and determine the company’s manufacturing capabilities, according to a statement. official.

According to “Special for Egypt,” the new engine is called the SMV-1000, and it is produced by the South Korean company STX. It is a water-cooled diesel engine with a power of up to 1,000 horsepower and a weight of up to 1,478 kilograms. It is considered the Korean alternative to the German MT-881 engine. Which was previously used on the Korean “Thunder” howitzer, as it is superior to the German engine in terms of light weight and improved fuel consumption efficiency by 5%.
In parallel, Egypt is currently working, in cooperation with the South Korean company Hanwha, on transferring manufacturing technology and preparing production lines within Egyptian military factories to launch the local manufacturing phase, as Military Factory 200 will manufacture the tracked armored vehicle carrying a howitzer and support vehicles of ammunition and command vehicles, while the Military Factory 100 manufactures the 155/52 mm Korean gun barrel, as well as the armored steel used in production operations.

In addition, the technology for manufacturing sensitive optical, electrical and electronic systems will be transferred for the first time to be manufactured locally in Egypt, including the Automated Fire Control System (FCS), which is planned to be produced by the Arab International Optics Company, affiliated with the National Service Projects Agency of the Egyptian Army.
Egypt aspires to become a regional center for exporting the Korean “Thunder” artillery system, which it will manufacture locally to African and Arab countries, as the Minister of Military Production stated, saying: “We have begun bilateral negotiations with a number of Arab and African countries wishing to acquire the K9A1 howitzer.”

In 2022, Egypt signed a contract worth $1.7 billion with the South Korean Hanwha Group for procurement, technology transfer, manufacturing and local production of the K9A1 EGY 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, known as “Thunder.”

Major Engineer Mukhtar Abdel Latif, Chairman of the Arab Manufacturing Authority AOI, revealed in a televised statement on the sidelines of the Egypt International Air and Space Fair EIAS 2024 the signature of the body represented by the British Arab Dynamic Industries company ADB, an agreement with the Chinese ELINC, to localize local manufacturing and transfer technology to produce one of the forces-operated radar systems Armed and equipped to tackle rallies.

Engineer Yasser Mohammed Atia, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the British Arab Company for Dynamic Industries ABD, revealed in a statement to Al-Watan newspaper, that the company signed 3 protocols for joint cooperation in the field of detection and countering the risks of rallies, where the first protocol comes to include a contract for manufacturing radar to detect drones, via a new locally available technology For the first time.

He noted that the second protocol that was signed deals with the manufacturing of a negative confrontation system via cyberwarfare, where a disability and chasm response system is planned to be manufactured, that cuts communication between the drone and control centers, to make the aircraft fall on its own, without firing a single bullet or missile at it.

Egypt is getting a lot better at the UAV/UCAV/UGV/USV game. This UGV looks like it came out of Star Wars it’s armed with a 7.6 automated (robotic) machine gun, grenades, and smoke grenades and uses a 360 camera powered by AI and a laser rangefinder. I just love the optics here the all-black UGV & the vehicle it’s being deployed from looks aggressive
