Egypt produces the Korean K9 Thunder cannon engine SMV-1000 locally
Egypt is preparing to participate in the manufacture of the engine for the Korean “Thunder” howitzer, as the media advisor to the Ministry of Military Production and the Ministry’s spokesman revealed that the Helwan Castings Company (Military Factory 9) is preparing to start manufacturing the body of the new Korean engine SMV for the K9A1 EGY howitzer, which is also being manufactured. locally.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Military Production indicated that Engineer Muhammad Ali Khalifa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Helwan Castings Company (Military Factory 9), received a delegation from Hanno Aerospace STX, the engine manufacturer, to follow up on developments in joint cooperation and determine the company’s manufacturing capabilities, according to a statement. official.
According to “Special for Egypt,” the new engine is called the SMV-1000, and it is produced by the South Korean company STX. It is a water-cooled diesel engine with a power of up to 1,000 horsepower and a weight of up to 1,478 kilograms. It is considered the Korean alternative to the German MT-881 engine. Which was previously used on the Korean “Thunder” howitzer, as it is superior to the German engine in terms of light weight and improved fuel consumption efficiency by 5%.
In parallel, Egypt is currently working, in cooperation with the South Korean company Hanwha, on transferring manufacturing technology and preparing production lines within Egyptian military factories to launch the local manufacturing phase, as Military Factory 200 will manufacture the tracked armored vehicle carrying a howitzer and support vehicles of ammunition and command vehicles, while the Military Factory 100 manufactures the 155/52 mm Korean gun barrel, as well as the armored steel used in production operations.
In addition, the technology for manufacturing sensitive optical, electrical and electronic systems will be transferred for the first time to be manufactured locally in Egypt, including the Automated Fire Control System (FCS), which is planned to be produced by the Arab International Optics Company, affiliated with the National Service Projects Agency of the Egyptian Army.
Egypt aspires to become a regional center for exporting the Korean “Thunder” artillery system, which it will manufacture locally to African and Arab countries, as the Minister of Military Production stated, saying: “We have begun bilateral negotiations with a number of Arab and African countries wishing to acquire the K9A1 howitzer.”
In 2022, Egypt signed a contract worth $1.7 billion with the South Korean Hanwha Group for procurement, technology transfer, manufacturing and local production of the K9A1 EGY 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, known as “Thunder.”
The Korean artillery system consists of the K9A1 155 mm self-propelled howitzer, the K10 advanced ammunition supply vehicle, which works to re-ammunition the howitzers automatically, and the K11 command and control vehicle, which is designed and developed specifically for the Egyptian army.
