The Deep History and Genetic Reality of Arakan

  • Deep Prehistory – 800s CE: The entirety of Arakan exists as a natural, unbroken geographic and ecological extension of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) delta corridor.
  • The Original Baseline Population: The territory is inhabited by a continuous South Asian (Eastern Indo-Aryan) population. They carry a dominant South Asian genetic profile combined with a unique, deep-time 2% coastal Hoabinhian hunter-gatherer layer that physically anchors their lineage to this specific soil for millennia [PMC4379912].
  • The Chandra Dynasty (4th – 8th Century CE): This highly advanced, Indianized trading empire rules the coast from its capital city of Vesali, situated right in the geographical center of Arakan. The state language is Sanskrit, the currency consists of silver coins minted with Indo-Aryan symbols, and the culture is shared with contemporary Bengal.
  • The Great Wall of Geography: The true biological and political barrier of the region is the Arakan Yoma mountain range, which completely isolates this coastal Indo-Aryan world from the central Irrawaddy valleys of mainland Myanmar.
  • The 10th-Century Migrant Invasion (957 CE): Displaced by regional warfare, large waves of Tibeto-Burman agriculturalists and warriors (the direct ancestors of the Bamar/Burmese) push over the Arakan Yoma mountains, invading the coastal plain and causing the collapse of the Chandra dynastic system.
  • The Asymmetric Mixing Event: The incoming Tibeto-Burman migrants establish absolute military control. Paternal DNA tracking proves that the incoming male conquerors politically dominate the land while systematically integrating local Indo-Aryan/proto-Bengali women into their new society [PMC1181980].
  • The Forging of the Rakhine: This conquest-driven melting pot creates the Rakhine ethnic group. The children of these mixed unions are raised speaking the language of their fathers (an early branch of Burmese) and identify with the new ruling class, effectively "Burmanized" the central and southern valleys of Arakan.
  • The Living Biological Proof: Comparing modern populations reveals the definitive biological clock. The inland Bamar carry virtually zero coastal South Asian DNA, whereas every single modern Rakhine person alive today carries a heavy biological stamp from the coast [PMC3913319]. This comparison proves that exactly 17% to 20% of the entire genetic code of every living Rakhine person is directly derived from that original Bengali/Chittagonian/Rohingya ancestral pool [PMC1181980].
  • The Continuous Unmixed Survivors: The mountain-crossing migration grows demographically thin as it reaches the western frontier. Across wide expanses of Arakan, the original Indo-Aryan inhabitants are never absorbed. They live directly side by side with the mixed Rakhine enclaves, retain their original Indo-Aryan speech, and preserve their deep-time 2% coastal Hoabinhian signature to directly become the modern Rohingya and Chittagonian Bengali continuum [PMC4379912].
  • The Multi-Ethnic Mrauk U Kingdom (1429 – 1785): For centuries, Arakan operates as a brilliant, sovereign, hybrid coastal power. Early Rakhine kings utilize Islamic court titles, mint coins featuring Arabic script, and govern hand-in-hand with a powerful class of Bengali Muslim ministers and scholars before later shifting their strategic alliances toward Portuguese maritime forces.
  • The Erasure of the Buffer (1784 – 1826): The central Bamar Konbaung Dynasty invades from the east, brutally occupying the land up to the Naf River and triggering massive refugee flights into British India. The subsequent British colonial administration stabilizes a bureaucratic border at the Naf River, permanently trapping this original Indo-Aryan population inside modern Myanmar.
  • Conclusion: Driven by modern state propaganda [PMC8715339] and a desperate desire to fabricate a myth of absolute ethnic purity matching the Bamar majority, Rakhine nationalists and the Myanmar military have systematically executed the genocide and forced ouster of the Rohingya - viciously expelling the original, native inhabitants of Arakan while ignoring the absolute biological fact that Rakhines are genociding their ancestral mothers' relatives [PMC1181980, PMC3913319].

  • Autosomal Composition:
    • Tibeto-Burman (Yellow/Yangtze Neolithic): 62% – 70%
    • IVC-like (Indus Valley Civilization): 12% – 18%
    • SAHG / AASI (South Asian Hunter-Gatherer): 10% – 15%
    • Hoabinhian (Prehistoric SE Asian Baseline): 4% – 7% [PMC4379912]
    • Austroasiatic: 2% – 4%
    • Steppe (Yamnaya / Indo-Aryan): 1% – 3%
  • Paternal Haplogroups (Y-DNA): Highly dominated by Tibeto-Burman lineages O2a (O-M122) and O-M134, but shows the highest proportion of mainland Indian-specific paternal clades (such as H and R1a) among the regional hill tribes due to centuries of proximity to the Bengal plains [PMC1181980].
  • Maternal Haplogroups (mtDNA): Primarily East Asian branches like M9, F1a, and B4, alongside a substantial integration of mainland Indian-specific maternal lineages (M33, R).
Chakma
  • Autosomal Composition:
    • Tibeto-Burman (Yellow/Yangtze Neolithic): 48% – 54%
    • IVC-like (Indus Valley Civilization): 18% – 25%
    • SAHG / AASI (South Asian Hunter-Gatherer): 15% – 19%
    • Hoabinhian (Prehistoric SE Asian Baseline): 5% – 8% [PMC4379912]
    • Austroasiatic: 1% – 3%
    • Steppe (Yamnaya / Indo-Aryan): 2% – 4%
  • Paternal Haplogroups (Y-DNA): Heavily fixed in Tibeto-Burman O-M134 and O2 clades [PMC1181980]. The Chakma have the least amount of South Asian-specific paternal haplogroups among the region's tribal populations, confirming that their shift to an Indo-Aryan language was mostly cultural rather than father-line driven.
  • Maternal Haplogroups (mtDNA): Dominated by East Asian lines M9, F1a, and B4, but anchored to the local soil by a noticeable baseline of South Asian maternal clades like M33.
Rakhine

    • Steppe (Yamnaya / Indo-Aryan): 1% – 2%
    • Austroasiatic: 0% – 1%
  • Paternal Haplogroups (Y-DNA): Overwhelmingly East Eurasian, led by O-M122 (O2) and O-M119 (O1), with minor but highly significant presence of South Asian R1a and H clades near frontier boundaries [PMC1181980].
  • Maternal Haplogroups (mtDNA): Showcases a heavily mixed structure. The classic Tibeto-Burman maternal profile (F1a, B4, B5, M7, M9) is strongly accompanied by South Asian maternal lineages (M, R, U), serving as direct proof of the 10th-century absorption of the local Indo-Aryan female population [PMC3913319].

    • IVC-like (Indus Valley Civilization): 1% – 3%
    • SAHG / AASI (South Asian Hunter-Gatherer): 1% – 2%
    • Austroasiatic: 0% – 1%
    • Steppe (Yamnaya / Indo-Aryan): 0%
  • Paternal Haplogroups (Y-DNA): Aligns tightly with Southeast/East Asian expansions, dominated heavily by O2a (O-M122), O1b, and minor lineages of C-M217 (associated with northern Eurasian flows) and N [PMC1181980].
  • Maternal Haplogroups (mtDNA): Predominantly East Asian macro-haplogroups, including F1a1a, B4, G, and M9a, with virtually negligible baseline allocations of western or South Asian maternal markers [PMC3913319].

The assertion that Rakhines are autosomally a hybrid population of migrating Bamars and native Rohingya/Chittagonian ancestors is supported by population genetics [PMC1181980, PMC3913319]. By treating the inland Bamar as an unadmixed genetic "control group" and modern Rohingya/Chittagonian datasets as the original coastal baseline, genetic mapping reveals the precise mechanisms of this historical merger [PMC1181980, PMC3913319].

The scientific data supports this conclusion through several lines of evidence:

1. The Baseline Control Group (Bamar Profiles)
To identify what the migrating Tibeto-Burman ancestors looked like before they crossed the mountain barrier, geneticists map the Bamar of central Myanmar.
  • Their DNA is heavily East Asian (~78%–85% Yellow River Neolithic / ~12%–17% Hoabinhian) [PMC4379912].
  • Crucially, the Bamar carry almost no South Asian DNA (only a negligible 1% to 3% baseline) [PMC3913319]. This establishes that the migrating Tibeto-Burman core had virtual zero contact with the Indo-Aryan gene pool before scaling the Arakan Yoma mountains.
2. The Coast-Specific Genetic Shift
When we analyze the Rakhine—who share the exact same Tibeto-Burman language family and historical migration origin as the Bamar—their autosomal genome shows a massive genetic shift. They carry a distinct biological architecture that is completely missing from the Bamar control group:
  • Every modern Rakhine individual carries a heavy 14% to 22% South Asian genetic profile (consisting of Indus Valley-like, SAHG/AASI, and Steppe components) [PMC1181980, PMC3913319].
Because the ancestral Bamar lacked this DNA, it could not have been carried over the mountains from China or central Myanmar. It was picked up directly on the coast. The only available demographic population on that coast capable of passing down that specific component was the original, continuous Indo-Aryan/proto-Bengali population represented today by the Rohingya and Chittagonians [PMC8715339].

3. The 17% to 20% Substratum Math
When geneticists run multi-source ancestry models (like qpAdm or Global25 linear modeling) to determine how the Rakhine genome was built, the math points to a specific proportion:
  • The Rakhine genome cannot be modeled using Bamar data alone.
  • To achieve a successful statistical fit, the model requires exactly 80% to 83% Bamar-like ancestral input mixed with 17% to 20% Rohingya/Chittagonian-like ancestral input [PMC1181980, PMC3913319].
This 17%–20% is the permanent biological signature of the original population that was integrated into the emerging Rakhine society during and after the 10th-century conquest.

4. Direct Proof of Asymmetric Mixing (The Sex Bias)
The final validation comes from the imbalance between paternal (father's side) and maternal (mother's side) genetic markers [PMC1181980]:
  • The Father's Lineages (Y-DNA): Rakhine paternal lines are overwhelmingly East Asian (Haplogroups O2 and O1), matching the Bamar [PMC1181980]. This confirms that the military and political conquerors who dominated the 10th-century expansion were Tibeto-Burman men.
  • The Mother's Lineages (mtDNA): Rakhine maternal lines display a significant presence of South Asian macro-haplogroups (M, R, and U subclades) [PMC3913319]. This matches the maternal profiles found in the Rohingya and Chittagonian populations.
This genetic mismatch is a classic signature of conquest-driven assimilation [PMC1181980]. It demonstrates that incoming Tibeto-Burman men took local Indo-Aryan/proto-Bengali women, raising the children within the dominant Burman language and Buddhist culture [PMC1181980, PMC3913319].

Summary

The genetic comparison between the Bamar and the Rakhine provides a clear and definitive conclusion:

Rakhine Genome = 80% Bamar (Paternal Core) + 20% Rohingya/Chittagonian (Maternal Substratum)

The biological data shows that the Rakhine are fundamentally a coastal branch of the Bamar population that absorbed nearly one-fifth of their entire genetic identity from the original Rohingya/Bengali ancestors of the coast [PMC1181980, PMC3913319].

If you're analyzing this issue for purely scientific research purposes, that's fine.

But, if you want to get involved in political issues because of this, you're asking for trouble.

Good Now Take back all the Rohingiyas back to where they belong i.e. Shonar Bangla.

Both Myanmar & Bangladesh will be at eternal peace.

Good Job done now implement it for the sake of peace.

If you're analyzing this issue for purely scientific research purposes, that's fine.

But, if you want to get involved in political issues because of this, you're asking for trouble.
Point 1: The Myth of Ancient Tibeto-Burman Isolation
  • State Narrative: State propaganda claims Rakhine civilization lived in Arakan since 2666 BCE. They claim absolute ethnic isolation from the West.
  • Scientific & Historical Refutation:
    • Tibeto-Burmans are recent 10th-century migrants.
    • They crossed the mountains in 957 CE.
    • They invaded the coastal plain by force.
    • Before 957 CE, the land was entirely Bengali.
    • It was a geographic extension of the Bengal delta corridor.

Point 2: The Co-opting of the Chandra Dynasty
  • State Narrative: Nationalist history claims the ancient Vesali/Waithali Kingdom as their own direct history. They count the Chandra rulers as ancient Rakhine kings.
  • Scientific & Historical Refutation:
    • The Chandra Dynasty was completely Bengali.
    • The state language was Sanskrit.
    • Coins featured Indo-Aryan symbols.
    • Their culture was shared with contemporary Bengal.
    • The rulers belonged to the Indo-Aryan continuum.

Point 3: The "Illegal Bengali Immigrant" Label
  • State Narrative: The state claims Rohingya are modern illegal immigrants from Chittagong. They use this to justify citizenship exclusion and forced ouster.
  • Scientific & Historical Refutation:
    • Rohingya are the original, unmixed baseline population.
    • They have inhabited Arakan since deep prehistory.
    • They survived the 10th-century invasion without mixing.
    • They retained their original Indo-Aryan Bengali speech.
    • There is no modern migration from Chittagong.

Point 4: The Myth of Absolute Ethnic Purity
  • State Narrative: Rakhine nationalists claim pure Tibeto-Burman blood lines. They deny any biological connection to the Rohingya population.
  • Scientific & Historical Refutation:
    • Rakhines are fundamentally a hybrid group.
    • Paternal DNA proves the 957 CE conquerors were male.
    • They systematically took local Bengali women as wives.
    • Every living Rakhine carries 17% to 20% Bengali blood.
    • Ancestry models require this exact Bengali input to function (PMC1181980, PMC3913319).

I don't need convincing that they are Bengali. I am happy for them to join BD, must bring their land with them.

if you are referring to the Rakhines, they are around 1/5th Bengali and 4/5th Bamar loosely speaking, so I doubt they want to join with us Bengalis. As it is they are actively kicking out the Rohingya, which is the same ethnic and genetic group as their ancestral mothers. I am not even sure they are aware about their own genetic and ancestral history. I think most Bangladeshi do not know that Arakan was Bengali Chittagonian/Rohingya homeland for thousands of years.

Along with Rakhine. Sure.

I was talking about Rohingya. Whole is Arakan is not needed, a piece of Arakan commensurate with the Rohingya Muslim population will be sufficient and fair too.

Myanmar is basically a failed state filled with warring ethnicities who routinely try to genocide one another. The trouble is already there
