His Russia visit was out of desperation.

He was taking Pakistan into the clutches of the India-Russia nexus in an attempt to cling on to power which is why he was thrown into a jail cell shortly after. Foolishness.

Ultra narcissists like him don't really give a shit about their host country. Its all about me me me. He would have taken the country to the breaking point. Even in jail he's attempted this.

I was not following the news closely back then as I was in university. But I do remember his interview of "Absolutely not!" He was of no use to the US, so they didn't feel any obligation of helping him either.

Again, when it comes to Pakistan, nothing matters. I guess, at some point one has to make a trade off.

I am of the view, even if the visit to Moscow was scheduled years ago before the Ukrainian crisis, the advisors to Prime Minister Imran Khan should have cautioned him against it. Absence from vote against Russia and then visit to Russia were clear indicators of siding with Putin. We didn't have to take any sides. If we had abstained from the vote, we should have avoided the visit altogether. That's what would have been a neutral and safe stance for Imran Khan.

I don't believe Khan's visit to Moscow had any bearing on his domestic political situation or the western attitude towards him. Pakistan has been trying to build a better relationship with Russia for many many years and Khan's trip was just a part of that process.
