I'd go for FN Scar-H,but what do I know. Agree that's one very powerful round. Very powerful. Kicks like a mule,but you can't fail with that caliber.

Recoil is no different, if anything less than that, of my M1 Garand. I shoot issue or issue-equivalent ammo in both. Out of my FAL, even softer because of the adjustable gas plug.

I happen to have two. One is an Aussie-issue L1A1. The other is a Congo variant with a paratrooper stock. I like them because they eject the brass into the middle of next week.

Back on topic, as I said in a related thread, there is only so much that can be done to "modernize" the G3. For now, it continues to serve with distinction. Still, at some point, militarises that still carry it will have to make a hard decision regarding replacement.

The other night I was comparing the FAL with the G3 on google AI. I was asking the AI questions about stuff I mostly knew the answers about more or less,but it was still interesting. In the Hellenic Army,the FAL started coming in the late 60s to early 70s. But in the 80s they decided to replace it with the G3. So they adopted the G3 as the standard rifle of the Hellenic Army with full local production. Well,HK 11 and 21 as well and of course MG3,I think MP5 too and other equipment and ammunition by HK.

So the FAL was kept by some special forces units until the late 90s. Now it's mostly in reserve and used by some Navy and secondary units,some 60,000 rifles supposedly.

If you ask me,I'd prefer the G3 in its standard configuration,not with rails and new handguards and M4 stocks :S

I am as old school as you can get when it comes to weapons. Yet, as a realist, the rail systems and collapsible stocks have their place. I'm not convinced a full sized battle rifle is the place. It's bad enough when today's M4A1 when "equipped" weighs more than when I carried an M16A2.

Think what that would be like having lasers, etc. hanging off a G3?

The MG3 is still an outstanding GPMG. No need to replace it IMO. The G3 OTH has seen its day.

FWIW, don't expect the new US M7 / M8 rifles to have a long life expectancy either. Nor when I was at Camp Perry did I see the AMU using them in competition. They were still using NM-configured M16s complete with appropriate optics.

I think what often gets missed in these debates is we tend to compare Pakistan Army and NATO. Much of NATO ops are still centred around either operating within IFVs, within Urban zones and airborne/marine ops.

Pakistan is still a predominantly light infantry force that will engage conventional units at quite a range. 7.62mm stopping power still counts in the Thar Desert or Himalayas

I do not pretend to be an expert at all, and yes, the G3 is heavy and cumbersome and showing it's age, but if a TTP bastard, possibly with body armour, is 300m away about to raise an AK-47 in my direction I want a 7.62mm round going into him....
