In this V-log, Islamabad Files analyse Pakistan's historically prioritised radar-based air defence systems (including HQ-9, LY-80) - primarily it's because Pakistan faced conventional threats, like fighter jets, drones, and cruise missiles, where such systems were effective. Passive systems like IRST were not urgent due to high cost, complexity, and limited regional stealth threats. However, Islamabad Files examin emerging modern conflicts, especially the Iran-Israel-US scenario, which actually highlight that stealth aircraft can be tracked via infrared (heat signatures) as just recently, Iran’s “Majid” system reinforced this shift. Future threats, particularly India’s potential induction of 5th-generation fighters (AMCA or allied platforms) and other adversaries, will challenge radar-based systems like the F-35 does globally due to low RCS and advanced stealth features. To counter stealth threats, Islamabad Files thinks that Pakistan needs a layered, network-centric air defence combining radar, IRST, and electro-optical sensors. In this context, Pakistan's Global Industrial Defence Solutions (GIDS) is developing FAAZ-SL, a mobile short-range (20–25 km) air defence system with imaging infrared and radar guidance. Designed to counter stealth and conventional targets, it offers “shoot-and-scoot” capability and aims to reduce reliance on foreign systems.
