How Gwadar Port Is Benefiting From the Strait of Hormuz Crisis

Business at the port has increased amid ongoing tension. But business should not have to depend on disruptions and wars.

How Gwadar Port Is Benefiting From the Strait of Hormuz Crisis

MV Riva Glory with 14,629 MT transshipment cargo arrives at Gwadar Port in Pakistan, April 5, 2026.

On April 16, two cargo vessels arrived at Gwadar Port, carrying 368.7 tons of machinery and general cargo goods, as well as 5,000 metric tons of fertilizer. Earlier in the month, another cargo ship brought over 14,000 metric tons of transshipment cargo goods.

So far in April, Gwadar has handled around 11,000 standard shipping containers. For a port that handled around 8,300 containers in all of 2025 and historically has not seen more than 20 ships dock in an entire year, the current activity is unprecedented.

Some analysts have interpreted this surge as signaling a potential long-term opportunity for Gwadar, one that could improve its visibility in regional shipping networks, build operational credibility and perhaps, attract sustained commercial interest.

Gwadar’s location near the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow chokepoint through which almost 20 percent of global oil and liquified natural gas (LNG) flows, accords it strategic importance.

This and the deep waters of Gwadar’s eastern bay, which give it the capacity to handle large cargo ships, attracted Chinese investment. But despite these advantages, the port has remained underutilized for much of the past two decades.

The recent surge in cargo traffic is driven by regional dynamics and geopolitical tensions, especially connected to the Strait of Hormuz. In recent months, Hormuz has dominated world media headlines to an extent that has rarely been seen before.

This is largely because of the Israel-U.S. war on Iran and the repeated closure, reopening, and blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Being such an important global energy route, these disruptions have sent shockwaves through global markets, causing supply shortages and surging oil prices.

Transshipment cargo vessel reaches Gwadar on May 4

GWADAR- The first transshipment cargo vessel of May 2026, MV Show Long, has anchored at Gwadar Port on May 4, marking the first major ship to arrive at the port this month.

A GPA official told Gwadar Pro, the vessel is carrying 16,077 metric tons of transshipment cargo, including over 13,000 packages of Chinese-manufactured industrial equipment and pipes.

The shipment was originally destined for Kuwait, but due to the ongoing maritime situation in the Strait of Hormuz, it was diverted to Gwadar.

According to the Chairman of Gwadar Port, Noor-ul-Haq Baloch, the transshipment vessels’ arrival at Gwadar Port highlights the port’s growing importance as alternative trade routes are being explored across the region.

He further stated that berthing, cargo handling, and documentation processes for diverted vessels are being carried out efficiently, strengthening the port’s operational readiness and enhancing its credibility in global trade.

This development is positioning Gwadar Port as a key transshipment hub in the Arabian Sea, providing a safe and efficient alternative route for the Gulf and regional markets.

Gwadar gains strategic boost from Pakistan-Iran transit rules

GWADAR - Gwadar has been further positioned as a key regional trade hub radiating across the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia following Pakistan’s approval of goods transit to Iran via its territory.

Titled “Transit of Goods Through Pakistan Order 2026”, the notification newly issued by the Pakistani Ministry of Commerce has taken immediate effect. The government has outlined new transit routes, with Gwadar, Karachi and Taftan designated for transit cargo movement.

Gwadar, sharing a border with Iran, boasts robust land transport connectivity. According to China Overseas Ports Holding Company (Pvt.) Ltd. (COPHC), the deep-water ice-free Gwadar Port is capable of handling containers, bulk cargo and warehousing operations while providing maritime services, and the Gwadar Free Zone supports industrial manufacturing and agricultural, livestock, forestry and fishery processing industries.

“Against a complex and volatile global landscape, international economic connectivity faces mounting headwinds. We stand ready to deliver upgraded professional services to our partners. Institutions and enterprises are welcome to leverage the policy advantages of Gwadar Port to pursue win-win cooperation and contribute to regional economic prosperity,” COPHC stated.

The first transshipment cargo vessel of May has anchored at Gwadar Port, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, announced on Tuesday.

The minister said that the vessel, MV Shu Long, was carrying 16,077 metric tons of cargo.

“Due to the current situation in the region, the vessel was redirected towards Gwadar,” the minister added.

He said that the berthing of the vessel and the cargo handling process were progressing swiftly.

“Gwadar Port is increasingly gaining a key position among alternative trade routes,” Chaudhary said, noting that four transshipment vessels were recorded to have arrived at the port during April.

He further stated that in light of the regional maritime situation, Gwadar’s strategic importance is continuously increasing, and the port is becoming a reliable hub for global trade.

GPA incentivizes 30 days free storage for import, export cargos at Gwadar Port on May 8

By Yasir Habib Khan | Gwadar Pro
May 9, 2026

Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) has started providing up to 30 days of free storage for import and export cargos to be docked on Gwadar Port on May 8. Free storage facilities are also being offered in cargo sheds, storage container yards, and repair sheds managed by the Gwadar Port Authority in order to facilitate investors as much as possible.

This was revealed by GPA chairman Noor-ul-Haq Baloch in a meeting with members of the all Pakistan Shipping Association in Karachi, where he gave a detailed briefing on the situation arising after recent regional tensions, the strategic importance of Gwadar Port, and matters related to transit and transshipment trade on May 8.

He divulged that all these facilities are connected through a modern six-lane expressway linking the port and free zone with the Coastal Highway.

He said that due to the tense situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Gwadar could serve as a safe and alternative trade route in the event of any possible war or sanctions. According to him, access from Gwadar to eastern regions of Iran and Central Asia is several hundred kilometers shorter compared to other cities of Pakistan, significantly reducing logistics costs and transit time.

During the meeting, Chairman Noor-ul-Haq Baloch stated that Gwadar Port is set to become the future hub of regional trade and logistics, and its importance in the region is increasing day by day. He said that Gwadar Port’s approach channel is the shortest among the country’s ports, measuring approximately four and a half kilometers in length.

Chairman Noor-ul-Haq Baloch further stated that a route exists from Gwadar to Zahedan and onward to Central Asia. He recalled that in 2015, the first convoy of containers arriving from China was successfully transported to Gwadar Port through the route, proving that Gwadar possesses the full potential to connect the region with China and Central Asia.

Pakistan needs to complete its end of Iran-Pakistan oil pipeline till Gwadar and expedite work on Gwadar oil refinery.

Who knows in a future strait of hormuz crisis, Pakistan could be re-exporting Iranian oil to the world.
