HAL LCA Tejas: Updates, News & Discussions

Still you have to applaud execution speed of Turkey. In India we have just too much Babus and HAL works at government speed.

It is pretty much same as even in private corporation, where you have too much middle management and less technical workers slowing things down.

Some Indian corporations are very good, and agile, would even say world beating. I am glad these are not focusing on defence and it is left to HAL....

Its like this, they have executed one very visible step fast. Other not so visible steps have not been done. India has done not so visible steps first. What will define speed for both the nation is when the planes be introduced.

Private cororation comment was not specific to Indian but general. Every compony where middle management becomes fat slows down.

I agree many private Indian corporations are excellent at execution just look at Kalyani.

Both steps can go in parallel visual and system. Also in todays works people ask for results which are visible so even in that sense Turkey is right.

Look I am not trashing Tejas just saying HAL needs to be more agile and I am seeing they are getting better because MK1 took 3 years after contract.

We will see how they execute MK2 or AMCA.

NO. both steps can not go in parallel because if your shape needs to be changed significantly you need to do the flight test again.

Not sure what other step you talking about I was talking about communication fifth generation capabilities with other assets that has nothing to do with the shape of the plane.

As I said no need to get worked up, we’ll see how quickly MK2 and AMCA comes up.

We do blame HAL and DRDO for many failures. Even, I have been very critical of them. Truth of the matter is that, HAL or DRDO are not the agencies to be blamed solely for all failures. Each step of theirs is monitored and controlled by steps laden with bureaucratic hurdles imposed by multitudes of government agencies that remain in the shadows.

Any step that has financial implications is vetted and approved by Financial advisors of Ministry of Finance and they are some of the nastiest sons of b##ches and can get down to dirty tricks to prove their worth. They are just one example. That’s how files take years to get clearance. Even a highly motivated scientist can get flustered with these hurdles and become just another bloke in the cog and start enjoying good and easy life.

Could Turkey have come up with KAAN in record time, with such bureaucratic hurdles? No chance.

It is not that HAL hasn’t learnt any lessons. That’s how they have come up with the idea of private partnership where major decisions can be taken without delays. Even then government sanction is required for budgetary support and clearances. Our file on AMCA cleared that hurdle in the same time frame as Tureky rolled out and did the first flight of KAAN. That shows, how fast (slow) we are.

We still have a long way to go, to truly become a dynamic power. The speed and health of the Military Industrial Complexes would be one good indicator, when we can say that we have arrived.

Sadly, that hasn’t happened yet.

What a beauty!

LT-5205, the fifth Tejas trainer.

Hoping to see the R-73E go away and the ASRAAM appear on all Tejas Mk1 fighters, trainers as well as the Tejas Mk1A.

Notice how the Tejas Mk1A LA-5033 did not fly with any R-73E. I'm hoping that they'll be entering squadron service with the ASRAAM instead of the R-73E.

The nose cone of Tejas MK1A is larger compared to that of Tejas MK1 in order to accommodate the bigger UTTAM MK2 AESA Radar.

I don't think so.. Mk1A and Mk1 has same nose. Twin-Trainer has smaller due to space constraints.

No it is the same. And btw, the Tejas Mk1A is going to use the Elta 2052 AESA radar till the 40th unit is delivered. After that, the Uttam AESA radar will be used in place of the Elta 2052.

And just FYI, the radome on the Tejas Mk2 is actually slightly smaller than that of the Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A in order to be able to accommodate the IRST.
