Hangor Class Submarine | Updates & Discussion

Between Stirling and Fuel Cell, we're basically weighing very quiet with totally quiet. The PN wanted fuel cell via the Type 214, but went ahead with China's Stirling stack as that was quite mature and proven.

Is there going to be a little more noise due to the moving parts of Stirling? Yes, sure, but the PN also weighed that the Hangors will operate in fairly busy waters, so there's enough masking to make that minor acoustic leak a non-issue in practical terms. There might be some other factors at play which we'll never know about either, e.g., possible use of lithium-ion batteries with the AIP.

However, we will likely see a Fuel Cell AIP solution come via the SWATS and next-gen SSKs, but the mission intent for those will be absolute silence.
What is the max submerged endurance is it 30 days or 21 days or more ?

PN/KSEW did not disclose. CSOC said the S26T (for Thailand) has an endurance of 20 days and AIP range of 768 nautical miles.
Wow, back in the day an SS would need to surface every 3 days to run the engine and charge its batteries!

But that's with snorkelling. When CSOC says "range with AIP" they meant without snorkelling. Otherwise, it's 8,000 nautical miles.
no no, thats submerged, snorkel range is 8500nmi!

MESMA will almost always give higher speeds and endurance because it priorotises higher power ceilings.

In its workings MESMA is literally a nuclear reactor, where the nukey bits are replaced with ethanol and liquid oxygen for heat. In theory, PN could actually reverse parts of MESMA into a functioning nuclear propulsion system, if they were able to develop an approriate SMR. MESMA is probably louder (we talk in relative terms because all of these are designed with accoustic stealth in mind anyway) vs stirling, it has alot of pumps, turbines, and moving parts, whereas stirling cycles are relatively simpler. But being lower power, you wont have the kinds of endurances or impressive speeds of MESMA. One of the biggest benefits of a nuke boat is its big underwater speeds, maybe like 5-10x that of stirling cycle aip, whereas MESMA equipped A90B will submerge at 2x the speed of a Yuan if needed. Basically, MESMA is a massive key in NRDI/PAEC possibly being able to develop the downstream for a nuclear propulsion system for boats.

2000 miles at 10 knots is impossible though. MESMA produces 200 kw which will only get you to 4-5 knots. You will have to use battery power to get to 10 knots. Power scales with speed cube so with the battery providing say 300 kw, it won't last more than just over a day.

yes, i should have been clearer, submerged it can do 4kts on AIP.

Anything about the torps? BTW it took basically exactly 2 years from launch to commissioning for the hangor based on this we could see at least 2 Chinese hangors being delivered next year and 1 more either later that same year or early 2028, we might see the first Pakistani hangor launched too next year hopefully.

Yup I think All 4 chinese ones will be commissioned by the end of 2027. Baki Pakistani wali Allah jany. Don't expect any of them to be commissioned before 2030.

i think PNS Tasnim is nearing completion.

BTW PN needs 210 to 250 torps to equip all the subs meaning It could be spending $800 million to nearly a $1 billion or torpedoes alone.

PN has an original HWT torpedo program, guess this has something to do with it.
