Huawei achieves a milestone for China and becomes independent from the US with a 100% proprietary operating system. If Apple has shown anything with iOS, it is that not depending on Google is an advantage

The “war” between China and the United States intensified from 2019 onwards when Huawei removed Google services of their devices. That same year they presented HarmonyOS, an operating system developed by them as an alternative to Android to achieve greater independence from Google and American companies. However,HarmonyOS was still based on an Android core open source. Developing an operating system from scratch is a task that requires years of work and millions in R&D investment.

HarmonyOS Next achieves 100% in-house development certification

Since then, the target of China and Huawei has been develop a strong and independent ecosystem from third parties. The App Gallery is visible for downloading applications and its system HarmonyOS Nextwhich in 2024 has become the brand’s own operating system without the need for the Android core.

The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology has certified that the HarmonyOS Next core has a Grade A autonomy level and does not depend on third-party components. Huawei’s president of software boasted after the certification of how quickly they have achieved this milestone.

“We have achieved in less than 10 years what other companies took 30.”
In terms of performance, Huawei claims that HarmonyOS Next has a 10% higher performance compared to the previous Android-based version. From here, the rollout will begin on the millions of Huawei devices inside and outside China, as they have confirmed, it will reach the whole world in a staggered manner.

Huawei is not the first company to follow in the footsteps of Apple and its ecosystem

The main Apple’s strength lies in its ecosystem and how it integrates hardware, software and services manufacturing. Other companies have tried to do the same, such as Microsoft with the mobile phone market and Windows Phonebut we all know the result. Other companies have a more integrated ecosystem, such as Samsung, but their computers still run Windows. Huawei’s plan is to extend HarmonyOS Next to all its devices, as is already the case with the Android kernel version.

It is precisely this independence from Google services which allows Apple to operate normally in China. It is one of the few companies that does not face sanctions for using proprietary components and software, such as Apple Maps. Other companies cannot offer alternatives to Google Maps or use Intel processors. HarmonyOS Next has everything to remain The reference company that is in China and move forward more freely than ever before. Others wonder whether the United States will regret having forced Huawei to evolve in this way.

The answer lies only in the future and how they can adapt to the rest of the world market, beyond China, where Google services are still used directly. Currently there are methods to install these applications externally, but the “distrust” on the part of consumers has increased and is clearly reflected in the market share in recent years.
