‘I want to cry’: Afghan medical students in Pakistan face expulsion fear

Wow, what a legendary 30-year plan.

Back in the mid-1980s, one US dollar was worth around 15-16 rupees. Today, the rupee has gone through so many "adjustments" that even a calculator needs emotional support.

Pakistan's total debt is now approaching $300 billion. On top of that, the country paid about $10.5 billion to IPPs in just 11 months, including roughly $5.6 billion in capacity payments. In simple terms, we're paying billions not only for electricity we use, but also for electricity that's politely waiting to be used.

Meanwhile, according to the World Bank, 40.5% of Pakistan's population was living in poverty in 2024, which is roughly 103 million people. Imagine that. More than 100 million people struggling to make ends meet, while we continue celebrating GDP figures, new loans, and "historic economic packages" every few years.

At this point, Pakistan's economic strategy sometimes feels like a family that keeps taking new credit cards to pay off old credit cards, then proudly announces that its purchasing power has increased.

For three decades, we've been told that difficult decisions today will bring prosperity tomorrow. The problem is that tomorrow keeps getting rescheduled.

The rupee keeps falling, debt keeps rising, electricity keeps getting more expensive, and poverty remains stubbornly high. Yet somehow every government claims success, every minister presents achievements, and every crisis is blamed on the previous administration. If excuses generated electricity, Pakistan would have zero loadshedding.

The real tragedy is not the numbers themselves. The tragedy is that behind those numbers are millions of families choosing between food, education, healthcare, and electricity bills. When over 100 million people are living in poverty, perhaps it's time to stop measuring success by press conferences and start measuring it by the quality of life of ordinary citizens.

After 30 years, the report card is simple:
  • More debt.
  • A weaker currency.
  • Expensive electricity.
  • Millions more struggling to survive.
But don't worry. I'm sure the next "long-term economic plan" will finally fix everything... just give it another 30 years. 😏

And before anyone gets upset, sorry, I have a bad habit of busting myths. In fact, I like busting myths that even the MythBusters couldn't bust. 😅
