Its funny because in the commonwealth games, India never comes out anywhere near the top either and they like 20x larger than any other competitive nation lol.

IMF change estimates every 6 months. IMF make nice list of all countries to compare but its not always apples to apples comparison. I rather look at official GDP numbers. India GDP will not cross $4t even by March 2027 while IMF have it already over $4t for some time.

India is defending INR like a country under IMF program. Restricting gold imports, restricting oil companies to buy USD from open market etc So estimating GDP in USD 2 years in advance doesn't make sense in this case. India can decide to not defend INR and let it slide past 100. A lot can happen by 2028.

A depreciating INR is good for India's exporters, which is one of the reasons Indian central bank had not been defending the currency earlier and allowing reserves to accumulate. However, it is also inflationary. For several months, Indian government has manged that by fixing the price of petrol even as crude prices rose and INR depreciated and having oil companies foot the bill. As a result, India had lower inflation than Pakistan even though INR depreciated significantly against PKR. However, oil companies do not have an infinite capacity to absorb losses. So, it makes sense to defend the currency given the level of reserves and some tailwinds on trade like deals with UK/EU/US.

I agree a lot can happen in two years, but the economists have to do their job and come up with a forecast. They have a reasonable methodology which is the same across all countries. Even if INR depreciates a lot, their forecast for India can still be right if GDP growth also picks up and inflation goes up enough. I know they can be wrong but they have a more vetted methodology and higher credibility than your back of the envelope calculation.
