India Economy Thread

The government talks of Viksit Bharat – a prosperous and developed India. Great idea. But study the numbers carefully. 90% of India is poorer than sub-Saharan Africa, the poorest region in the world.

I mean tourists dont visit poor places anyway, they come to the touristy parts. There are many horribly poor places in America and Pakistan, thats not where the tourist goes.

What's India's share of global manufacturing?

What's the trade balance of exports vs imports?

What's the rate of investment vs the rate of de-investment in India?

And how have these changed since the 1970s, 80s?

What's with India's obsession with the word "Superpower"? What does it mean for Hindu extremists?

My question was actually on the global share of manufacturing.

Being the 5th largest manufacturer is meaningless given your population size.

Global share of manufacturing is a better measure of industrial competitiveness. China has a 32% share. Higher than the US, Japan, Germany, and India combined.

India, which has a higher population than China, holds less than a 3% share. Which has remained the same since 2005. China, back then, had a 10% share.

For perspective, the " Make in India" program had a target of a 25% share of global manufacturing by 2022. Plenty of your countrymen went around internet forums back in the mid-2010s as if that target had already been achieved. But given how far off target you ended up, no one talks about this metric anymore (unsurprisingly).

The manufacturing share of the Indian economy is declining. So is the % of people employed in the industrial sector.

I'll let others speculate about your future industrial trajectory...
