Obvious choice given Astra Mk1 is maturely in service on the Su-30MKI and Indonesian Su-30s will get a modern BVR.View attachment 205039
NEW DELHI, July 7 (Reuters) - India will supply the BrahMos cruise missile system and the Astra air-to-air missile to Indonesia, an Indian government official said on Tuesday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on his first trip to the Southeast Asian nation since 2023.
In March 2026, Indonesia's Defence Ministry confirmed that it had entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos missile system, with contract finalisation expected afterwards. That statement came from Indonesia itself, not India. This isn't a deal, its essentially just a "we're talking about it".
Coming from Indonesia, it's literally meaningless.
They've said so far that they are in talks to buy the following jets.
SU-30MK2
SU-35S
KF-21
F-15EX
JF-17
J-10
RAFALE
MIG-35
and now this.
Basically, their government is hedging its bets, and doesn't really have a clear cut plan.
Most likely, they'll buy the KF-21 and maybe the F-15EX, and call it a day.
Every other intended purchase will be dumped into the sea.
Yeah, down vote me all you want, but Indonesia has been in "final stage" talks about literally all of the fighters i mentioned. In March 2026, Indonesia's Defence Ministry confirmed that it had entered into an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos missile system, with contract finalisation expected afterwards. That statement came from Indonesia itself, not India.
Since then, Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh stated that the Indonesia BrahMos deal was in its final stages, and during PM Modi's July 2026 visit, both sides announced deeper defence cooperation involving BrahMos and Astra missiles. Reuters is now reporting that India will supply both systems.
Talks are several steps behind this process. Fighter aircraft evaluations is a different matter altogether. Indonesia uses a similar assortment of weapons we do, so they'll find it easier to integrate some modified weapons.
