Indian Prime Minister Narendra ⁠Modi ⁠is currently on his first trip ⁠to the Southeast Asian nation since 2023.

Obvious choice given Astra Mk1 is maturely in service on the Su-30MKI and Indonesian Su-30s will get a modern BVR.

This isn't a deal, its essentially just a "we're talking about it".

Coming from Indonesia, it's literally meaningless.

They've said so far that they are in talks to buy the following jets.

SU-35S
KF-21
F-15EX
JF-17
J-10
RAFALE

and now this.

Basically, their government is hedging its bets, and doesn't really have a clear cut plan.

Most likely, they'll buy the KF-21 and maybe the F-15EX, and call it a day.

Every other intended purchase will be dumped into the sea.

Since then, Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh stated that the Indonesia BrahMos deal was in its final stages, and during PM Modi's July 2026 visit, both sides announced deeper defence cooperation involving BrahMos and Astra missiles. Reuters is now reporting that India will supply both systems.

Talks are several steps behind this process. Fighter aircraft evaluations is a different matter altogether. Indonesia uses a similar assortment of weapons we do, so they'll find it easier to integrate some modified weapons.

Yeah, down vote me all you want, but Indonesia has been in "final stage" talks about literally all of the fighters i mentioned.

Zero have been actually confirmed.

But that's kind of moving the goalposts from the original post. The actual news here is the BrahMos/Astra deal, and that one's reported as signed, not "in talks" or "final stage." Different verb, different category. You can be completely right that Su-35/KF-21/Rafale/etc are all vapourware for now and still have this missile deal be a real, inked agreement, they're not the same claim.

If you've got a source saying the missile deal itself is unconfirmed or just an MOU/LOI dressed up as more, genuinely happy to look at it.

The geopolitical underpinnings of Modi's recent visit show a broader framework being worked on by both the sides.

Could still fall through, sure. Everything can. But "we watched this thing work and want it" reads differently than "we've been circling six different jets for a decade." Whether it is an intent or binding commitment remains to be seen.

On the money point, also fair, Indonesia's defense budget has real constraints. But missiles and munitions are typically a much smaller line item than fighter jets, so the "no money" argument that explains stalled Su-35/ Rafale/KF-21 talks doesn't automatically transfer to a missile order the same way.

Even bigger strategic development is this port on the strait of Malacca, much more significant than few Astra MK1 as their SU 30 fleet is limited.

Talks of credit line being opened to indonesia for further strategic development is also on.
