India - US Tariff and Relations | News + Updates

I don't know if you are aware that Peter Navarro is literally a convicted criminal and served a prison sentence . It wasn't without reason that Elon Musk called him a "moron" and "dumber than a sack of bricks". He is a complete crackpot.

He is just a attack dog of USA establishment. He is doing his job well.

I hope you understand what "net" means. It means the difference between what is invested in India and what India invests abroad. Indian companies are now global multinationals . Tata owns Jaguar Land Rover. Most rich /capital surplus countries have negative net FDI. I would say it is a mostly a positive sign that a company in India's stage of development is going from being an importer of capital to an exporter. If India lifts the ban on Chinese FDI, the number would shoot up again, but I am not sure it will be a good thing for India overall.
India net FDI have crashed to $354m in 2024.

The USA establishment would not touch a convicted criminal with a barge pole. The establishment is actually being demolished by Trump , starting with DOGE. The problem is that most career officials with experience and experience in international trade and geopolitics have been fired and Trump's kitchen cabinet is now running the show. Navarro has been one of Trump's hanger-ons for a while , but he doesn't have a real job. If he did, he wouldn't have so much time to spend on TV channels and social media. Trump's main guys dealing with the India negotiations are Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick ( who also doesn't understand a lot about trade) and chief Trade Representative Jamieson Greer ( who does have international trade experience).

Trump is following on with Biden policy, he is just not as diplomatic and neither interested in giving India few more decades to get its act together.

In fact what Biden did was worse for India. Removed Hasina from BD. Asked Pakistan establishment to remove Imran Khan and all will be forgiven.

Hasina was ally of India. Imrandu was indirect ally of India. Both gone under Biden administration.

Not really. You can argue whether Biden was good or bad for India, but his administration was staffed by competent and experience people and he listened to their advice about things he didn't know much about .

Trump is a brilliant politician who knows how to rile up the most uneducated and ignorant voters in America , but he doesn't really have a policy on anything beyond advancing his self-interest and winning the Nobel Prize, because Obama did. He does have racist and protectionist instincts, but he is pissed at Modi mostly because he is not giving him the win and validation he wants. He employs similar tactics with anyone whose doesn't give him what he wants. He called the Intel CEO a CCP agent and asked him to resign. Once he came to the White House and paid homage , he came a great guy who was being victimized and the US government even invested in Intel. Trump is just an unstable and unpredictable guy. Don't be surprised if he does a complete 180 degree turn on India soon.

Dude, I don't understand your language. If you wish to engage with me please do so in English. I'm certain that you wouldn't appreciate it if I started responding to you in Afrikaans now would you?
Oh, I thought you were an Indian.

What I said is, just like Surrender Modi recently warned Pakistan by saying, "behave or eat my bullet", he can manage up and say something similar to Donald Trump, "Oi Donald Trump, shut up or prepare to eat my bullet."

India's economy grew much faster than expected last quarter ( 7.8% vs 6.7% consensus estimate)

This is more than likely Modi’s last term. At 74, Modi has probabaly been told by the RSS chief that retirement should be at 75.

Modi is too high profile (and making Indians act too arrogant globally) for India’s developmental hopes of keeping a low profile and drawing investment within the next 20-25 years demographic dividend.

Trump is just hammering home the point; slow your role and know your place considering what you are actually capable of.

I am not sure how any of this is relevant. Even the post itself is non sequitur.

In any case, Mohan Bhagwat is older than Modi and he has clarified that he never meant that he himself or anyone else should retire at 75.

One of the saner voices from the US

These funded think tanks are like last of dinosaurs. Their bet on India against China failed to materialize as Sindoor exposed India limitations. Now USA will punish India rough behavior along with not giving any economic concession in the name of containing China.

Days of being strategic freeloader are over.

Why not dispute the arguments in the article instead of an ad hominem attack ? If you want to do that, at least attack just the writers instead of all think tanks in the world as a whole ?

Give India more time. Like for what? Any American think tank that say India will not become "strategic" partner of USA now but will in 20 years is living in delulu land.

And I mean strategic partner in real sense. You can't be strategic partner of USA and also ride on strategic autonomy. Hunt with the hounds and run with the hare.

Supply chains? America learned putting all their eggs in China basket backfired. They rather diversey their low tech goods supply chains. And get back manufacturing as much as possible with high tariff.

Fight China or contain China? Forget it. India rode this for 2 decades and China is now super power.

So why should USA give special economic concession to India?

@hydrabadi_arab

Hydra bro,

So why should USA give special economic concession to India?

Have Indians, on PDF or elsewhere, asked for "economic concessions"?

Regards
