India - US Tariff and Relations | News + Updates

Actually Europeans should appreciate that India and China buy Russian oil. It helps avoid inflating oil price in the open market. If India and China don't buy Russian oil, Europeans would have to pay much more for the oil and gas they consume. These ungrateful bastards.
Trump simply wants to ban other countries from using cheap Russian oil, but he can grant American companies a free pass to continue using Russian oil, just as he initially banned South Korea and other countries from exporting chips to China, while granting American companies a free pass to do so. Ultimately, Trump wants all countries except the United States to use expensive American shale oil, while the United States uses cheap Russian oil. This will lay the foundation for America's reindustrialization.

Best understand fora and social media is 90% a peanut gallery....and peanut galleries have lot of selective itches that need selective scratching all the time.

So narcissism bull pulpit in DC, gets various overnight or more longer term trumpkins, trumpa loompas etc (folks that have all the qualities of trump deep down but dont have NY real estate story to show for it, so end up being no names with all the sociopathic perpetually online angst, fuelled further by bots and echo chamber mobs etc).... until they turn against him on something else like the epstein stuff, israel, Iran B-2 action (right after a nobel peace prize nomination, and then Israel joins that nomination process too lol) or trump becoming more anti-russia suddenly.... whatever it is incl some mix of cultish conspiracy theories against whichever out-group or tribe they hate.

This is problem with lot of folks that hang hats on political persona as be all end all in general....because politics is very tribal in end. India suffers a lot from this too.

Once you filter out the 90% peanut gallery (ignorant, unprincipled or combination of both), you see there's 10% of knowledgeable + principled folks that you get much further with with much less time invested.

These %'s may vary where you go, but more or less the pareto principle which posits 20% is omnipresent as ballpark in every human endeavour.

Satya bachan!! 👏

Nope.

India will either negotiate with Trump or accept the Tariffs until a Trump replacement takes over.

Non democracies are incredibly unstable and not long term stable partners. Even as all this hullaballoo is going on , a MASSIVE crisis is brewing in BYD. And that's just one of the massive crises that has rocked in the last 5 years.

Impact on an economy is just one side of the story. You also need to consider the pain tolerance. India could succumb with an impact that is just a tiny fraction of that to China.

Although extremely undesirable, India's pain tolerance is very high contrary to many beliefs. Now the orange king is hinting another round of secondary tariffs on India. It must be reviewed the sectors that are likely to get hit and the fact that beyond 30-40% which will probably result in these sectors becoming unviable (for export to US only), any further increases hardly matter.

So, it's a tradeoff between temporary mortarium on few sectors vs. standing up to the blackmailer. I would choose option 1.

India doesn’t have the leverage and economic might to match Chinese in this regard.

Standing up and not caving in can be done but with a little care.

On serious note. Indians are realising China is a future fighting with China will not help.. i’m afraid Pakistani shortsighted policymakers may take us to American camp again

Modi was trying his best to have good relations with China. He had multiple meetings with him and tried to develop a personal rapport too with Xi.
But, Galwan crisis changed all that.
The fact that China is an economic behemoth isn’t lost to the planners.
Issue remains same.
China tried to bully us, as US is trying to do now.
There is no reason for India to keep aside its pride for the sake of massaging the egos of big boys.

No, no, no — Trump is my friend. Donald Trump is my friend.

You guys were so busy sitting in the West’s lap, beating your 86-inch chest, pretending to be a superpower.
And now? Suddenly you’ve come back to your senses — because Operation Sindoor has brought you crashing back to Earth.

I have a question for you:
Where do you think India stands after Operation Sindoor?
Did it hurt India’s global image? Be honest — or is denial still easier?

A childish way of describing international relations. Using derogatory descriptions to try and make a point. Please behave like an adult and learn to discuss with dignity.

Any nation tries to build a relationship becomes “sitting in lap”?
Is Pakistan sitting in Chinese lap now? Was it sitting in US lap earlier? Or is it sitting in IMF’s lap always?
Were Canada and Europe too sitting in US lap? You see how idiotic such statements are?

Trump is an anomaly and every sane person knows it. India trying to develop good relations with US isn’t some lowly act being made out by many idiots.

Had it ended on 7th May, then it would have been really bad optics. Luckily it went on to 10th May. The pictures of precision strikes over your bases and radars salvaged a lot.
Performance of Indian AD and lacklustre planning by PA for BuM changed a lot in our favour. BuM turning out complete dud saved the day for us. Unlike fanboy’s claims of Indian reputation destroyed, it is far from truth. This aspect is off topic, so raise any doubts you have on the relevant thread.

There are many clowns who are trying to connect Sindoor with Trump tariffs. I am sure that Sindoor is the cause of tariffs on Canada, Brazil as well as China. The monumental World war Sindoor is bound to have global ramifications.

For all it's worth, I believe this (along with China's curb of rare earth metals) are the kind of jolt needed by us for a jump start on manufacturing and rare earth metal extraction. India's economy was, kind of, left on auto-pilot rather than the stronger push needed. This might be a lifetime opportunity to course correct & take the next big leap with reforms and investments.

Anand Mahindra shares similar opinion.
