a trade deal with India was imminent. Trump used some sell-outs to force them and make it happen. people are naive, jumping with joy like India has been beaten.
in Pakistan it is so easy to push people towards a line to tow, keep them blind, sell them a narrative based on some jingoism. we have grown old, watching this mantra for 78 years of history.

Time to look back and see all the events and analyse how it all went.
When Trump announced the tariffs it did look bad. Trump let loose his lackeys who went on an overdrive to put pressure on India. Many of them made personal attacks against Modi.
Modi knowing that Trump was trying to flame bait, decided to stay quiet. Now, this is an assumption since one can only deduce such things from turn of the events. Infact no leader worth his salt directly engaged Trump. Because he is a known mudslinger and there is no winning against him through social media.
Before the tariffs were announced, lunch diplomacy and most favourite FM had already happened. This made many people to put 2+2 =10000000 and many wild theories were propagated overnight.
- Trump loves the powerful. And India has been found to be weak.
(this was the best one)
- Trump wanted India to stand against the Chinese but has realised that they can’t.
- Days of Indian diplomacy of not joining a camp are over. This world is falling into camps and there is no place for neutrality.
- Indian attempts to fool the world have been exposed.
- Modi and his team have been defeated in a 4D chess game by their very own FM.
- India isn’t as good a trading partner, as being claimed and has been exposed.
Most of these theories were juvenile attempts to trumpet own bugle but it did cast a shadow over Indian foreign policies and if they were flawed.
While all this was happening, India imported billions of USD worth of Russian oil and made a killing. But, after the tariffs were announced, one wondered if it was worth it. After all the overall economic well being is more important than a short term sprint.
As one looks back, all this seems to turn into a boon. Indian government went on an overdrive to find alternatives to the US market. The biggest one was within. 1.4 billion people can be huge consumers. A big boost was given to that by reducing taxes and internal tariffs.
Thanks to Trump, EU also saw that a trade deal with India is to their benefit. Many issues pending for last 20 years were addressed in a jiffy and “mother of all deals” was signed. Many other smaller FTAs were also inked and many were put on a fast track.
And now the tariffs of 18% have been agreed upon with a FTA that can be termed “father of all deals”.
Has India turned strong overnight to the liking of Trump?
In the end -
- India made billions through Russian oil.
- Signed significant FTAs that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
- Next set of domestic reforms were implemented.
- Got the best trade deal this side of the earth.
This is not a victory, but , a mirror to those who claimed a geopolitical shift over a false narrative sold to them.
Trump being Trump, might spring a nasty surprise on India or any other nation in the very next moment.
Bottom line - Don’t get either too excited or go into a gloom. Hold your horses before giving a verdict. Kyunki picture Abhi bhi baaki hai mere dost.

Tariff was there for months, not any of the Indian export to the US got replaced by anyone. Take rice exports for example I remember there was some arguments that our neighbours are going to export more rice to the US. Nope, India removed the export restrictions and the prices fell flat instead of an increase in export their exports reduced in value. None of them have the capacity to replace us in any sectors and this is a feel good place for cherry picking and clutch at straws.

Service exports have reached 42 billion USD in December. Trump tariffs and H1B squeeze has done wonders. I fully see us reaching 1 trillion USD export by 2028. But if we don't plan ahead, we won't 2 trillion USD. Upskilling in service sector plus massive "upgrade" in manufacturing (cheap land, few regulations, relaxed labor laws, scale, supply chain, better judiciary....) is needed to go beyond what we have right now.
As for as GDP goes, we must upgrade our cities and build dozens of new ones.

The happiest is China because it will get more oil at cheaper prices, in fact practically free.
While India's imported energy costs are likely to go up by $12 billion paid in dollars, China could see a decline in its energy costs by a similar amount.

On serious note, India now have secured both EU and American markets for its export, at much better rate then Pakistan. Indian exporters would easily screw over Pakistani products. To f@ujeets and patwaris.... still meri jind meri jan? World is moving at some pace, India secured both EU and US. UK is already in the bag for them. $500bn isn't huge when it comes to imports, can be sorted out in 5-7 years of trade. At least we by our nature managed to scam that orange pedo for long and still do
