US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing the additional tariffs less than 14 hours before his initial tariffs were to come into effect

New Delhi:
US President Donald Trump today announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on goods coming from India as penalty for what he called New Delhi's continued buying of Russian oil.

Mr Trump signed an executive order imposing the additional tariffs less than 14 hours before his initial tariffs were to come into effect.

After the order, the total tariff on Indian goods, barring a small exemption list, will be 50 per cent.

While the initial duty becomes effective on August 7, the additional levy will come into effect after 21 days.

What It Means For India?

The additional tariffs obviously means a much higher cost for Indian exports in products like auto parts, textile, and electronics.

The steel, chemical and pharma industries will be affected and may face a huge setback.

The trade imbalance between India and the US could widen.

There could also be a possible shift or reconsideration in the supply chain.

If I were an Indian, I would beg Modi to stop this confrontation. Nothing is safe after the latest altercation. Trump will keep hurting India. Even IT exports could be hit.

I can pretty much guarantee that India will be hit badly by H1B visas. There is no doubt in my mind that many IT related jobs in the US will now be given to Americans.

India and Pakistan have fundamentally different diplomatic and military cultures.
Pakistani society and institutions are heavily influenced by hardcore Islamic laws,
India follows a secular legal framework, though its cultural traditions are shaped by Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh philosophies.

Now coming to the topic, what should Modi do to reverse the tarrifs? Should India stop buying oil from Russia? Should India stop providing components to Russia? Or should India continue its relationship with Russia and ignore US demands?

This is really good. I am happy to hear that Modi is willing to go through with his national interests. I also think that India should ABSOLUTELY continue its relationship with Russia.

Is it time to say goodbye to QUAD? The most logical step for India would be to step out of QUAD, right?

India–U.S. relationship cannot be compared to the Pakistan–U.S. relationship, As India's economy grows and its military influence expands, it is natural for more disagreements or points of friction to emerge between India and the United States.

You haven't answered any of my questions. This isn't some ordinary dispute. The US accuses India:

1. Buying Russian oil and selling it for handsome profit.
2. Fuelling Ukrainian war.
3. Providing components for Shahed drones which are used to kill Ukrainians.
4. Scamming the immigration system i.e. H1B.

How will Modi address these concerns?
