Indian Air Force News and Discussions ll

Its clear something went down which Indians are hiding diligently which they have been doing it since last year. They revealed Teja crash after a week, they downplayed Su30 lost last week and this incident where clearly a missile trail is also visible in the video possibly from a SAM.

They probably thought a Pakistani drone/quadrocopter crossed the LOC and their SAM went hot ignoring the possibility that their own craft can be that flying object as well. Now another possiblity it, that the drone might be of theirs as well but the smoke coming out from the crash site indicate it as a decent flying object like fighter jet/heli or a small plane like AWACS.

Losing 1 AWEW&C to a self kill. 2 would be impossible.

But - this being the Indian Armed Forces, anything is possible.

I await for clarification on these even with "keen interest" :)
No i tjijk 2 awacs crashed due to fratricide

The best analysis of the whole airwar is Vikram Nair's "Modi in historical perspective: A south block insider's account". Chapters 6-8 etc IIRC.

Nair is obviously an Indian but he is very fair. He adopts a legal baseline: what does the evidence say.

I purchased the book quite recently via Amazon. TBH as a Pakistani I found the book very interesting and was impressed by how unbiased he is in his analysis, although his heart is obviously with India.

Seems like the "done deal" for 114 Rafales has been stalled, France not even allowing India access to interface control document now, let alone source codes, so they cannot tailor Rafale at all.

No Tejas delivered in 3 years now

Rafale fleet down to 28-30 planes.

No SU-30 upgrade signed

SU-57 talks going nowhere.

I think people do not realise the upcoming disaster that is happing to IAF
those Indian military enthusiasts are pulling their hair out on Twitter, and they should be, they are just arguing day after day for import or indigenous, and it's funny to see them posting a bunch of ppt or AI photos of future projects and some of them worshiping rafale F5, FCAS and Su-57.

Yup, no good options left bar maybe Rafale, and as we know PAF are very comfortable taking this plane on. It also keeps IAF in 4th gen

SU-57 - Not real 5th gen, Russians have only produced 20 operational units in 10 years, so even in a BJP drug induced sex fantasy HAL will never be able to make half that many every year.

FCAS will not enter European service for another 10 years, India will be second in line, so 12-14 years, if they get let in.

All in all, they are screwed....

Yasser your comment about Indian air power is justified
A country with the fifth largest gdp
Fifth largest Forex reserves and fifth largest annual defense budget of 85 billion should really be further along in some aspects of air capability ie manned fighters in mid 4th generation and 5th generation should be here now not in decades time
Also Indian navy has very competent indengious programme why have the air force failed in comparison I blame the previous successive air chiefs utterly incompetent living in past doctrines and not following developments globally closely and adapting within their financial constraints

French aerospace leader Dassault Aviation has intensified its efforts to secure a landmark agreement with the Indian government for the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft by the conclusion of 2026.

This accelerated timeline was recently confirmed by Dassault CEO Éric Trappier, following the Indian Defence Acquisition Council's (DAC) formal approval of the project in February 2026.

The multi-billion dollar deal, estimated at approximately ₹3.25 trillion ($36 billion), is viewed as a critical step in addressing the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) urgent requirement for modern combat platforms.

Negotiations are currently focused on a sophisticated configuration known as the Rafale F4+ standard.

This variant introduces significant technological advancements over earlier models, featuring enhanced radar capabilities, upgraded electronic warfare suites, and the integration of the Thales TALIOS targeting pod.

A notable addition to the current discussions is an option for India to acquire the F5 "Super Rafale" standard in subsequent batches.

Slated for service in the early 2030s, the F5 is designed for the modern "collaborative combat" era. It is expected to feature:
  • M88 T-REX Engines: Upgraded powerplants providing 20% more thrust.
  • Unmanned Integration: The ability to control "loyal wingman" drones, such as those derived from the nEUROn project.
  • Stealth Detection: Advanced RBE2-XG radar utilizing Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to track low-observable threats.
Central to the deal is a robust commitment to domestic production.

Under the proposed framework, only 18 aircraft will be delivered in a "fly-away" condition from France. The remaining 96 jets are expected to be manufactured at the Dassault Reliance Aerospace Limited (DRAL) facility in Nagpur.

India has mandated a phased indigenisation strategy, targeting over 60% local content by the end of the contract. This initiative aims to transform India into a global hub for Rafale maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO).

Strategic partnerships, including those between Tata Advanced Systems and Dassault, are already laying the groundwork by producing fuselage sections in Hyderabad, with full-scale domestic assembly projected to begin by the late 2020s.

The urgency behind this defence procurement is underscored by the IAF's declining squadron strength, which currently stands at 29—well below the sanctioned requirement of 42.5.

With delays in the indigenous LCA Tejas Mk1A programme and the retirement of legacy MiG-21 fleets, the 114-jet Rafale order is seen as the most viable path to maintaining regional air superiority.

For those advocating su57 as alternative these are not one or the other situations

Rafale is replacement for jaguar and mirage 2000 both being replaced 2030 onwards

The su57 would purchased as a strategic stop gap to Amca
IE if the need arises for small fleet of fifth generation fighters in line of control India may order 40 su57m but only with the the engines and redesigned rear nozzles which is only arriving in five years time

Rafale is the quickest to induct and already in service
36 air force
26 marine Rafales navy from 2028

The Indians should logically decouple the Su30MKI airframe from its avionics and go for a full pure Indian avionics suite, ew, datalink for the Su30Mki, they have enough for the full suite of displays, radars, basically everything now. Leave the engine upgrade to Russia. Ie adopt a more aggressive Chinese like approach to the development of this sukhoi platform. .

Think that is the issue, they do not have a proven AESA or EW pod that is homegrown just yet

I used AI to search. This sentence means that the radar's RPU (radar processing unit), VPX SAC (signal acquisition/conditioning module based on the VPX standard), and digital receiver all use COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) solutions

.In other words, the main backend equipment of this radar was purchased from the international market.
What are the Indians boasting about their own research and development?

Probably made in China.

Oh the horror ¡ the world has abandoned india.

Oh the horror ¡ the world has abandoned india.

India had and still does have, an overinflated sense of it's importance in the global arms market, this partly led to a misaligned negotiating position vis a vis the French and Russians, and now they are in quite the predicament...
