Let me give you an example:
Imagine there are 10 subjects in a class, and there is competition to be ranked first. Naturally, I will feel the most pressure from the top students — maybe 3 or 4 out of a class of 40 — who consistently perform well.
Based on their capabilities, I will know that some students are stronger in certain subjects, just like different strengths on a battlefield. The kind of "threat" I feel from each will vary depending on the subject. But not overall from the other students
However, my real concern will be with the overall top students, not with everyone else. And if I already know that someone is better than me in several subjects, then they will be my main competition — the real threat to my chance of getting the first position.
I'm sure you still might not fully understand, but this is the best way I can explain it.
